Subject: Ideas to help with the feeding trolls epidemic. (Troll cure inside)

Introduction: This thread is about ideas on how to defeat trolls, and help other members learn how to deal with day to day trolls.

Idea #1:Have a video tutorial when new members sign up.

When I first joined I was new to the intrenetz and its culture, I had no idea what a troll was or how I was feeding one. I remember getting banned for feeding trolls and I would always be confused about it. My idea is when a new member signs up he/she has to go through a video tutorial. Explaining what a troll is and what you should do when you encounter one. Also add to the video what the consequences are for feeding trolls. Maybe have Red vs Blue come up with a funny and interesting video so people will learn, laugh and pay attention.

Idea #2: If a post is reported have a warning for people that are about to post.
Lets say you come across a post that looks like Example 1, if you decide you want to post in there you will get a warning that would look like Example 2 or you could get something like Example 3 when you press post or even have both warnings there.

Idea #3: Up grade the hammaz.
It seems that carpet bans are a pain in the butt for the moderators. They have to ban people one by one, that has to be annoying. If my ideas are implemented I think it would be fair to carpet ban more frequently. But for that to happen we need to make it so the Ninjas won't get carpal tunnel from banning so many people. Obviously I don't know much about the moderation tools, but I'll try to pitch my idea anyways.

Let's say a mod comes across a thread that deserves a carpet ban. Instead of him banning people one by one, he would have a check list. Also another button would be implemented, I like to call it unleash Ralfie. Unleash Ninjas would be used to ban individual user and the Ralfie button would be used for banning multiple users at once.

Example of what it would look like.
On this picture we can see that example A and C would not be banned but Examples B and D would taste of Ralfie's fury.

What do you think? Feel free to add more ideas to this. I feel like this would be a good time to make this suggestion seeing that Bungie.next is around the corner.

I like the video Idea, it's something that Bungie would so well.

But I still don't like carpet bans...... we all fall to trolls. No matter how long we've been on B.net

I think that a carpet ban should be the very last thing that a mod should have to resort to. For example, a thread where everybody is flaming each other. But even still there is collateral damage on innocent bystanders.

I thought about touching on that subject on the OP but I didn't want to make it too long because I know how add most people are in here. That's where the check list would come in handy. If the mod can see that you legitimately didn't know it was a troll thread he could just spare you from Ralfies fury.

A bit early to implement this. Maybe when destiny comes out or aerospace or whatever the -blam!- theyre calling it. New members are every 1 in a thousand accounts made atm.

This actually doesn't look too bad! However, that's a lot of change...too much for the users to handle, especially the flood.

Well that's true but if this were to be implemented it might take a while for everything to come together. I don't know how long it takes to implement something like this but I'm guessing it would take more then a day.

If these ideas were even considered it would take time for the webteam to discuss if its worth it or not and if it is worth it, planning takes place to figure out how this would be implemented. I don't expect these changes to be here very soon.

But that's assuming that Mods have souls...... and we all know they don't!

Even so, sometimes troll threads are disguised well. I fell victim to one of those recently and it's simple enough just to lock the thread and ban the OP. I don't see why they have to go through the trouble of banning individuals within the thread..... unless they deserve it of course.

Bye.

I really like the mandatory instructional video idea, but it shouldn't be limited to trolling because, lets face it, there's very few troll threads on this site. Most cases-- that I've seen-- of "trolling" are just instances of mis-categorised spam threads. Maybe if the video touched on the difference between Trolling and Spam.

My rule of thumb for a thread with a collapsed OP is to avoid that thread. I suppose a warning message would be handy for new users who have made a genuine mistake. Other than that, I see it as overkill. Three separate warnings (Collapsed post, reply pop-up and disembodied soul reply screen) is a few too many warnings in my opinion. But hey, that's just like, my opinion, man!

I like the multiban hammer idea, but what if I want to ban A, B and C for different lengths because of their individual contributions to the thread? Would I be able to select different lengths?
Unleash Ninjas
User A:
3 / 7 / 14 / 30 / 60 / 90 day ban?
(Select one)
User B:
3 / 7 / 14 / 30 / 60 / 90 day ban?
(Select one)
User C:
3 / 7 / 14 / 30 / 60 / 90 day ban?

*Yes, I wrote the Ban-hammer as a ninja. Whatcha gonna' do 'bout it?

  • 09.01.2012 4:07 PM PDT

I really like idea 2. Having a warning pop up like that when a user goes to reply to a thread may just stop some people posting in it.

I'm totally against idea number 3.

I know your joking (or at least I hope you are), from personal experience I can say that all my bans were well deserved. Mods in this site are pretty fair from what I've seen. And if we get a bad apple mod then he'll be demoted just like we've seen in the past.

I agree with that, if its a good troll then a carpet ban wouldn't be necessary. I'm talking about the obvious troll threads that get carpet banned now days anyways. I don't think these ideas would change the way mods think about bans. It would just make things easier for them.

They're all interesting and fair ideas. I don't think they'd stop some users, but it would help those who just don't know. And the Moderator multi-ban tool seems useful, but I don't know if moderators really have troubles with banning multiple people.

I agree, more things could be added to the video. The more the merrier, as long as its not a 2 hour video :/.

Yep something like that would work out. And for the ban message it could just be something generic but if the mod wants to leave a message he could.

Or we could have a video of the webmaster verbally owning the banned user.

I don't think they'd stop some users, but it would help those who just don't know.

I don't expect it to stop certain users but as you said, it would definitely help newer or ignorant to troll/spammers users that threads like that are bad. Since people would be more educated on trolls/spammers I think those threads won't get as many replies as they get now days.

Individually banning/warning everyone is tedious as hell. Unless of course you would like it if we copy/pasted ban messages and handed out the same ban, regardless of history.

Not a fan of the carpet ban, personally. Doesn't really solve anything, just means I get a bunch of PMs about it.
In this quote it seems like carpet banning isn't that fun. I'm sure its not difficult for mods to do it now days but making the process faster would make it less tedious. Especially if carpet bans were sent with a generic message.

  • 09.01.2012 4:42 PM PDT

For the first one, I dunno if it's really in Bungie's best interest to advertise like that how there are users on their website that are asshats.

And for the third... I see the potential for a good number of accidental bans. Moderators just going down a page, need to ban somebody, turns out they accidentally hit the thing earlier. Eh. I do it with saved threads all the time anyway..

  • 09.01.2012 4:47 PM PDT

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I want Marty O Donnell to make the video with him climbing the rock wall again welcoming us all to Bungie.net.

"You get what you put into it."

When Legendary is too mainstream, you have Heroic. When you're the leader of the church of MLGeezus, have Epic in your username, and can't write 'About Me's' to save your life, what do you get?

This guy. And now, an side note: Most things I post contain lethal doses of sarcasm, so be warned, and try not to take me seriously.

Finally, a message to Bungie trolls everywhere.

Maybe not a video tutorial for number one, but a message that pops up your first few days explaining forums and their workings. As per #2, I have nothing to say about it except that it's a fantastic idea.

About 3 and the carpet bans, I'm not really a fan of carpet bans, unless the 'Don't reply to spam' rule really applies, or some kind of extreme case. But yeah, a checklist for multi-bans isn't a half bad idea.

Positive vibes.

Honestly, all three of these ideas sound brilliant; the video, specifically. I think an amusing introduction to trolls and a guide to avoid feeding them would be ingenious. Putting a pop-up window into effect that warns users also sounds like an exemplary idea. Overall, I reckon these ideas would, if implemented, greatly impact the community positively.

Questions lead to learning, learning leads to kowledge, knowledge leads to understanding, understanding leads to peace.

"I would kill to get a killionaire... 10 times... digitally."

I was actually thinking about a video this morning for this exact purpose. Maybe if the community got together and made this, they would add it into the New Hawtness (Achronos-1, Kittens-0) update. You could also have different versions of the video with a corresponding quiz (albeit VERY easy), to make sure that people actually watch the quiz and don't go do something else instead of watching the video. This longer process would also help deter trolls from making tons of Alts. The quiz would be easy enough that if you watched the video, you would definitely pass. It would be short quiz, and say, a five minute video that you could not fast forward on, but could rewind. Sorry for the rambling, but do you think this would be effective?

You'd have to make the video tutorial really eyecatching and intriguing for members to pay any sort of attention or else you'll have the same effect as people who are told to accept the terms and conditions. When users want to sign up, they want to get into the action then and now, not caring about anything else.

but do you think this would be effective?

People don't want to come here to have a quiz everytime a new "Internet OHS" video comes out. The reason people get other users completely worked up is because they don't care for the rules, because there's really no incentive to do so. Having videos and quizzes won't fix this IMO.

Bye.

I think a quiz would drive people away. Who wants to join a website just to be told that they have to pass a quiz to prove themselves worthy? No one! We want users to be aware of problems, not think that they are the cause of the problems.
