Positive vibes.

Well, some people believe titles are an incentive for following the rules - others don't. For those that don't, this will most likely not help; but you must realize that there are a handful of people who simply have no idea what they are doing. If they are knew to this website, and are unaware of what is and what is not a troll, and when and when not to post, I believe these ideas could help them immensely.

but do you think this would be effective?

People don't want to come here to have a quiz everytime a new "Internet OHS" video comes out. The reason people get other users completely worked up is because they don't care for the rules, because there's really no incentive to do so. Having videos and quizzes won't fix this IMO.

Trolls are trolls. They evolve after new obstacles come into sight.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

I'd leave upgrading of the ban hammaz to be discussed in HFCS. Moderating the public forums is a lot like moderating groups but on a much, much larger scale. It may offer different issues than moderating private groups. Really, the only ones who can make valid points or suggestions about the banhammer sytem are the current moderators.

Achronos already told us that he is brewing up something else along the lines of bans and that bans alone aren't getting the job done.

I like it. I try to tell people to report and move on, but alas, they like feeding their trolls. Great ideas though, Verachi. Us planning the downfall of the Flood and whatnot. ;) Keep them coming.

Truthfully, I don't even think it's intentional half the time. Most people don't even realize they are 'feeding the trolls'. They intentionally post negative comments that unintentionally add fuel to the fire. If that makes any sense.

Or there could be a carpet ban button, but you could use a checklist for who wouldn't be banned.

I was going to suggest that, but as you said, there would probably be one or two innocent people who would end up getting banned as a result.

This is true. I've seen comments just saying "No" or "Why" and while in the mind of the poster they feel it's the right thing to say, on an internet forum where discussion is trying to be provoked it just doesn't fit.

As a result of their posting, they add comments to the troll thread, making it grow. So, I do feel something should be put in place to prevent the trolling from expanding, what that is however remains to be seen.

Yes, but I think it would still be easier tha ngoing through a checklist, or banning one at a time. I honestly feel bad for the momd that carpet banned that "Free sex" thread. At least 50 people had to be banned.

Edit: Why is sex with a "ual" after it censored, but sex isn't?

Do none of these ideas seem helpful to you? That question is not meant to attack, but to merely pose an innocent query. If these ideas were to help prevent people from 'feeding the trolls', wouldn't that, in turn, prevent people from trolling?

Or we could have a video of the webmaster verbally owning the banned user.

If Bungie didn't want to involve Red vs Blue into this then using the webmaster would be a great idea. Except I wouldn't show the webmaster pwning somebody.
Posted by: burritosenior
For the first one, I dunno if it's really in Bungie's best interest to advertise like that how there are users on their website that are asshats.

I see where you are coming from, but at least for me, I would have appreciated a warning about trolls, when I first joined the site. I would see it as a sign that the website cared for my stay to be pleasent and they cared enough to guide me as a greeny.
Posted by: burritosenior
And for the third... I see the potential for a good number of accidental bans. Moderators just going down a page, need to ban somebody, turns out they accidentally hit the thing earlier. Eh. I do it with saved threads all the time anyway..

Accidental bans are possible. I'm sure accidental bans happen now days but I don't think it happens too often. I feel that our mods are accountable enough to try their best to not ban the wrong users but accidents do happen.

Perhaps that is true, but does the idea that it may be easier justify banning one or two (or more) innocent members?

But it's always possible for accidental bans when going through the checklist of who should be banned.

Maybe not a video tutorial for number one, but a message that pops up your first few days explaining forums and their workings. As per #2, I have nothing to say about it except that it's a fantastic idea.

That is also an option, the only problem that I can see with that is, most people don't really like reading, they'll much rather have an amusing video to watch.
Posted by: EpicOfTheEpicz
About 3 and the carpet bans, I'm not really a fan of carpet bans, unless the 'Don't reply to spam' rule really applies, or some kind of extreme case. But yeah, a checklist for multi-bans isn't a half bad idea.

I should have worded idea #3 differently. I would edit the post but its too late now. If this were implemented I'd expect the mods to not change the way they carpet ban.

Posted by: a rascal cat
Honestly, all three of these ideas sound brilliant; the video, specifically. I think an amusing introduction to trolls and a guide to avoid feeding them would be ingenious. Putting a pop-up window into effect that warns users also sounds like an exemplary idea. Overall, I reckon these ideas would, if implemented, greatly impact the community positively.

Thank you.

Welcome to the town of "Diligence." I'm Mayor Due.

I like the warning pop up idea. Sometimes I react to a thread a little too eagerly and I can see how that takes everything a step backwards.

Probably the best and most realistic idea I've read.

This longer process would also help deter trolls from making tons of Alts. The quiz would be easy enough that if you watched the video, you would definitely pass. It would be short quiz, and say, a five minute video that you could not fast forward on, but could rewind. Sorry for the rambling, but do you think this would be effective?

I don't think it's a bad idea but, a quiz might be too much for a new member. People are just lazy especially on the internet. I can see people procrastinating to sign up just because they don't want to take a quiz. I think that would be an awesome tool against troll/alts but it doesn't seem worth it on the long run.

The only way I can see the quiz working effectively is, if for an example you have somebody that keeps getting banned because of feeding trolls/spammers. For them to get completely off their ban they would have to watch the video and take the quiz but that might be too much. It would definitely make the trip to banadu not as fun.

You'd have to make the video tutorial really eyecatching and intriguing for members to pay any sort of attention.

That's where RvB would come in. Those bastards make the greatest videos. When I come across one of their videos on youtube I just can't turn it off. I swear they use sorcery.

A nice flash-animated video, in the same art style as the videos in the elevator rooms in Portal 2, would be cool. With Joe Staten narrating. Or Marty. One of the two.

Idea #3: Up grade the hammaz.
It seems that carpet bans are a pain in the butt for the moderators. They have to ban people one by one, that has to be annoying. If my ideas are implemented I think it would be fair to carpet ban more frequently. But for that to happen we need to make it so the Ninjas won't get carpal tunnel from banning so many people. Obviously I don't know much about the moderation tools, but I'll try to pitch my idea anyways.

I've never seen what the appeal is in banning great swathes of the community. That seems counter-productive.

Responding to spam is against the rules. Everyone who makes a reply in a spam thread is breaking the rules. Breaking the rules can warrant a ban.

I don't see what you don't see.

Step 8: Kill Th3 Invader

I like the idea in general a lot. Tutorial vid could be both funny and educational...with that bungie charm. The post-warning thing is really cool too. Some people don't think before posting (myself included as I just got released from the recent carpet ban), and it could definitely prevent Trolls from being fed.
