Subject: Ideas to help with the feeding trolls epidemic. (Troll cure inside)

Why not stop by my File Share while you're here?

~Long Live Halo 2
Only regret is I didn't play more of it.

If you haven't noticed by now, I'm sort of a jerk.

All this accomplishes is more carpet bans. Wouldn't that just be giving the trolls something they'd want? Anyway, just because a post is collapsed doesn't mean the entire thread is subject to a carpet ban, or the intended reason for the post was to troll/spam.

The problem is, the people who feed the trolls don't give a damn about this.

I really like the video idea. My first thread got me a warning because I didn't know any better (yes, I skipped the reading the rules....My bad).

Not sure about the warning though about posting in a reported thread. I say it would need to be reported multiple times before that seemed appropriate to pop up. Could you imagine all the uninformed reporting decent threads? And new people being to afraid to post in them?

Idea #3: Up grade the hammaz.
It seems that carpet bans are a pain in the butt for the moderators. They have to ban people one by one, that has to be annoying. If my ideas are implemented I think it would be fair to carpet ban more frequently. But for that to happen we need to make it so the Ninjas won't get carpal tunnel from banning so many people. Obviously I don't know much about the moderation tools, but I'll try to pitch my idea anyways.

I've never seen what the appeal is in banning great swathes of the community. That seems counter-productive.

Responding to spam is against the rules. Everyone who makes a reply in a spam thread is breaking the rules. Breaking the rules can warrant a ban.

I don't see what you don't see.

I don't think that's a good rule, then.

It just results in many people getting banned for a trivial offence, with the person posting the thread causing more damage than they ever would have been able to cause without the help of silly rules or over-zealous moderators.

I disagree, ideas 1 and 2 are ways to prevent carpet bans as well as troll feeding. If you were only talking about idea 3 then I'd maybe agree with you.

I don't remember ever saying that. If somebody accidentally posts in the wrong forum and his post gets collapsed, I don't think people in that thread should get carpet banned.

It may be trivial for you but it's not trivial for me. I don't enjoy seeing garbage on the front page getting tons of replies while legit threads get pushed back. Carpet bans aren't all that bad. I learned my lesson from getting a carpet ban.

But apparently the respondents don't consider it "garbage". Why should your preferences be favoured?

I like idea 2, but not idea 3. I think idea 1 is nice, but is a little insulting. People shouldn't need an instructional video about posting on a website.

If somebody thinks a thread like this isn't garbage then I'm sorry for them. I'd apreciate it if you could explain to me why somebody would see that as a good thread to post in.

Trolls are trolls. They evolve after new obstacles come into sight.

True that, but just because trolls can evolve, doesn't mean I'm going to bend over. As trolls evolve so do we.

Achronos already told us that he is brewing up something else along the lines of bans and that bans alone aren't getting the job done.

Whatever he is brewing up can still get better. We might say something in the forums that will help him get more ideas.
Posted by: American Recoil
I'd leave upgrading of the ban hammaz to be discussed in HFCS. Moderating the public forums is a lot like moderating groups but on a much, much larger scale. It may offer different issues than moderating private groups. Really, the only ones who can make valid points or suggestions about the banhammer sytem are the current moderators.

We can say things in here that will help mods think of better ways to help the hammer. Pretty much the same answer.

Perhaps he believes that these ideas will accomplish the exact opposite of what they are meant to accomplish, i.e., feed the trolls, rather than prevent the 'feeding of trolls'.

For the people that don't give a damn there isn't much you can do. But for the people that don't really know what a troll is it would help.

Truthfully, I don't even think it's intentional half the time. Most people don't even realize they are 'feeding the trolls'. They intentionally post negative comments that unintentionally add fuel to the fire. If that makes any sense.

Posted by: Unanimate Objec
I like it. I try to tell people to report and move on, but alas, they like feeding their trolls. Great ideas though, Verachi. Us planning the downfall of the Flood and whatnot. ;) Keep them coming.

That is irrelevant, that's no excuse to post in a obvious/spam thread.

I think that? Interesting.
Also "It's the flood" is not a valid excuse for bad behavior.

When I grow up I want to be bitter and spiteful.

"i liked the reality where everything was on fire better"
-legato on remedial chaos theory

The checkbox/checklist idea is interesting in that, although it aides in the process of carpet banning, it does permit moderators to discriminate between regular posts and those in violation.

I do not like the idea of additional warnings to reply because of a report. The post hiding report feature is already bothersome enough. There was recently an excellent thread made by Helveck, by which many users reported the OP (because people who report are silly), requiring an extra effort to even read it before responding. If additional warnings systems are to be implemented, I would like them all to have the option of being disabled in User Settings.

A video code of conduct would be interesting.

A short 2-minute video would be interesting. Maybe give some sort of incentive to watch the video. Like a badge on your profile or an achievement on Bungie.me

Stricter punishments for repeat offenders would help cut down on trolls IMO.

[Theory]- It'd be quite interesting to see them put in safety measures (like the video, which I think would help tremondously) and if they implemented the video around the time the 'New Hawtness' came around there could be incentives for people to watch.

I remember reading a thread somewhere about how Achronos wanted to do away with the base titles, and rather have people 'earn' titles from challenges in-game. If he actually did this, you could earn a title from watching the troll video (or maybe a funny avatar?).

The user would gain more knowledge about trolls (Ed. I never knew about trolls until a couple months of activity on Bnet), the video could be short, but memorable (Roleplaying DeeJ?), and they'd gain a little prize at the end for watching.

Granted, the title/ avatar would lose it's originality, but for people who are just joining the website, they don't know that. They're just concerned with getting the title/ avatar.

It seems to me it's a win-win for all.
[/Theory]

Also, if someone can find the thread in which Achronos talked about 'new' titles, please quote me and link it. I'd like to read it again.

Something like that is almost what I had in mind. That's a great example. The video that I had in mind focused more on Bungie.net.

If you are new to the internet then the video would instructional. If you are a internet veteran then the video would just be hopefully funny and entertaining. If somebody gets offended by the video, then they wont last against trolls.

That would be a good incentive, maybe give somebody an avatar if they complete the video or a name plate on Destiny.

And as for repeat offenders maybe something like this...

The only way I can see the quiz working effectively is, if for an example you have somebody that keeps getting banned because of feeding trolls/spammers. For them to get completely off their ban they would have to watch the video and take the quiz but that might be too much. It would definitely make the trip to banadu not as fun.

I'm definitely in agreement with the video, as well as the 'Notice: Post in this thread and you may die.' Upgrading the bannerz? I'd probably leave it up to the mods to decide if they want/ need an upgrade on their weaponry.

This is a good thread to decide everything in though, just so we can see everyone's opinion. All that's left is to see a ninja's input on the ban hammer idea and we'd be all set.

That's the whole point of the video. Just like you I didn't really know what a troll was till being in the site for a while. If I had known what a troll was earlier my experience would have been better as a greeny to the intrentz.

Did you edit your post? I swear you asked for a quote about in game things that unlock titles.
Posted by: Achronos
The trust rating already includes elements of game participation. I'm talking about making titles less about rankings and more about just labels. Right now, there is a hierarchy. What if there wasn't really a hierarchy. What if they were just labels that you got? The current idea that I fancy is that they'd be a user setting - there would be a set of titles that you can earn for various things, and then you'd go to your My Settings page and select which one you want to use. The prefix would still be done in the same way it is now, to differentiate a bit more. Not sure what I'd do about the bar colors, maybe they'd be earned too.

You guys think of the forum titles as a ranking system, but that's not how I see their purpose. I see it more for differentiating people on the forums, just like avatars.

Nothing really planned here, just thinking out loud.

Example 3
I like this a lot, but I feel like trolls would just report threads in the masses so that you'd have to click OK just to post in any thread.

That being said, I believe there is a way of monitoring thread reporting and reporting threads that aren't against the rules can get you banned. So, all in all, I like Example 3.

The problem is, the people who feed the trolls don't give a damn about this.
And those that do care would be scared to post, and that's a pretty poor environment to be a part of. Bungie.net shouldn't and doesn't need to be ruled with an iron fist.

Besides, I don't think any of this will be necessary to worry about soon.
