If you disable groups the people who are coming here solely for groups aren't going to start enjoying the mains again, they're just going to stop coming at all.

Don't worry. The forums won't die out or anything. Just a phase

I think strong ties in private groups do nothing but strengthen the community.

So I respectfully disagree.
Posted by: dmg04
That is a terrible idea.

I would rather not be forced to speak with specific people via public forums.
These three posts pretty much say it all, and are almost exactly representative of my views.
I'm active in private groups because there's nothing worth being active on the public forums for. No real news, sure the mail sacks are fun to be a part of, but beyond that everywhere is just a cycle of boredom or -blam!- posting.
In private groups, there are less people, stronger ties between members, and an altogether better atmosphere than the rest of the site at this current stage.
All this would do is damage to site's member base for the future when the mains lighten up again.

Posted by: squirrel dude
But should we want members who would only post in groups?
Yes. Because even in private groups people keep a lazy eye on the mains for when anything of note happens. All these members who you deem unwanted will be equally valuable in the future.
Posted by: squirrel dude
Should them leaving deter people bringing more people into the main-forums.
That doesn't make any sense.

  • 09.02.2012 5:03 AM PDT

Disabling groups would probably lower activity in the mains. The people who come here mainly for groups, but also post in the mains occasionally would probably just quit, as would the people who only post in groups.

Groups are extremely important to the community, it'd be less than half the size if they didn't exist. I'll stick with my groups. Not everyone enjoys discussing title bars and why we should have custom avatars.

I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

Stop it.

-blam!- no.
The groups are nearly all that's keeping this site going.

Fantastic idea.

I don't think it's necessary to close groups and it's not a priority to Bungie's web team either since the main forums are fairly active.

Groups are a much closer, tight nit community than the main forums. I've become "friends" with the members of the groups I'm in, and I prefer their company.

If what you propose is enacted, there's a good chance we won't talk often anymore, since we won't have a place to convene.
You won't have a place to converse in private.
Not to mention groups have a tendency to be more lenient than the main forums. We can talk about things in private that we cannot discuss in the mains. We can act like total idiots, and not get banned.
Fair enough

Well, that's fine. I don't know if you've heard, but there are other forums

But why stop there? Why not just import the 12 year olds from the mains into peoples houses so they can be annoyed by the little rascals even when they're not on bungie.net.
Because if I import them I would have to pay a tariff.

I wouldn't use private groups as much as I do if the community/mains didn't suck as a whole. Forcing me out of my private groups to interact with people I don't like isn't going to make me like them any better,

amended and agreed

So you went to the trouble of clicking on my profile, either to send a group invite or hate message, or to check my Halo stats and call me a BK. I like Peanut Butter Waffles.

I don't want to talk about Halo or I'd go to Waypoint, I have no burning desire to use the Gallery or the Universe Forum, and I've given up on even trying to have a sensible discussion on anything of note in The Flood, when, for every decent post, there will be five plus completely moronic ones.
Nope, private groups it is, where I can talk about anything I want, essentially with who I want.

I agree.

That makes it sound like there's only one true way to enjoy Bungie.net. In my personal, and totally awesome opinion, there isn't.

I understand, I'm the same way.

and I've given up on even trying to have a sensible discussion on anything of note in The Flood, when, for every decent post, there will be five plus completely moronic ones.Well, if you viewyour group is superior, that is fine. However, if your group and others like it posted in the public forums more often, then wouldn't that improve the quality of The Flood and other forums?

Nope, private groups it is, where I can talk about anything I want, essentially with who I want. But isn't that a false dichotomy? You can talk to who you want on the public forums as well as private groups.

No, it isn't, you're ignoring the first part of his post, where he says he can talk about 'anything I want'. Pretty sure there's topics that are off-limits here.

They call me Arch. YOU SHALL NOT PASS!

Posting on the forums: 5 minutes.
Making a thread: 20 minutes.
Claiming you are the alt of a banned account: Priceless.
For everything else, there's stosh.

I'll take two of what the the OP's on.

In all fairness I can see where he is coming from but not thoroughly thought threw. If you disable groups or the smaller private communities, of this vast community as we know it, the bigger community as a whole would no doubt suffer. It will Possibly start havoc between the admin/moderators and the members who solely use groups. Then once the havoc settled down those same members would leave. With that being said Bungie would lose a fair portion of their fan base here on B.net, I would think anyways.

Groups are one of the Best thing B.net has to offer why even think of disabling a leg on a tripod it will just collapse. The answer lies within promotions in the public community. That's my 2 bits.

I can never find the rights groups for me. The ones I'm currently in I enjoyed for a bit then I just stopped posting. If there was a group like the Septagon I would probably post in it more frequently than others, but some users here aren't exactly something I want to see if I joined a group like that.

You know nothing. The last time they took groups down to upgrade the system it killed a lot of them. If you take down groups the people who frequent them won't head to the publics, they just won't show up.
