Disabling groups would force activity back into the public forums.
Nope. Tons of people would complain and/or just stop visiting the site.

I was in a group... Once.

This "idea" is a little over the top. Bnet is about the community. Groups/Chapters are a major part of the community.

What the hell will we talk about here all the time? I can haz custom avatar? Ignore feature, nominate me for mod and I wat to clear halo of retards. There is a reason the mains have low activity while groups are thriving. OP should consider joining some active groups. There are plenty of them out there.

OP if you want more activity in the mains, instead of cutting off your nose in spite of your face, perhaps a little patience will go a long way. The unveiling of Destiny will flood the mains with new faces, new faces that aren't a part of any groups and will post in the mains.

I've never understood this mindset used by most of the mythics on here. There's an Off-Topic forum, it's called The Flood, ever heard of it? Because you act like you haven't, perhaps you should try it out. Not all of the public forums are meant for discussion involving Bungie-related discussion.

While I agree at times the flood does have some nice threads for discussion, the Forum is full of trolls, and spam. You don't even have to try and find it, go to the first page of the forum. There are spam threads, and trolls right there on the first page.

Enter my favorite group. Same or similar threads as the Flood, BUT minus the spam and trolls. I can actually post a thread in a group about an event that happened yesterday and not have my thread spammed with "old" or the plain just "k".

I keep my off topic discussion to group of members that I know and trust not to be forum asshats. The mains I use to discuss Bungie and how awesome they are. I am not the only person with this view as you already pointed out.

Groups are epic they stay, or a lot of people will vacate.

Yeah, I've been around it for 3 1/2 years. There's a reason I don't post there often anymore.

That reason being that it's a terrible forum, for those of you playing along at home.

Groups are extremely important to the community, it'd be less than half the size if they didn't exist. I'll stick with my groups. Not everyone enjoys discussing title bars and why we should have custom avatars.
Well, that's fine. I don't know if you've heard, but there are other forums
I don't want to talk about Halo or I'd go to Waypoint, I have no burning desire to use the Gallery or the Universe Forum, and I've given up on even trying to have a sensible discussion on anything of note in The Flood, when, for every decent post, there will be five plus completely moronic ones.
Nope, private groups it is, where I can talk about anything I want, essentially with who I want.

Having private groups help to strengthen a community.

No, no, no. I don't care about forum activity. There's nothing to talk about, and forcing people to come to the public forums would only make more repeat posts that have no discussion value.

Forum activity will go up when there's something to talk about. That's not right now though, and you should just wait a while to see an increase.

Plus, I probably wouldn't even come here right now if groups weren't active.

As we prepare as a community to bring in new members with the announcement of "Destiny" and other future Bungie projects, I think it would be beneficial to have a more united community.

Seriously? Destiny doesn't release until (probably Fall/ winter) 2013 And even then, we don't know if we'll get info on it. We don't know if there will be a public beta.

Personally, I think the Seventh Column is united and gets along great. It may not seem that way simply due to the low activity. But hey, that's what happens when there's nothing to talk about. Once more intel gets revealed, it'll pick up again and you'll see just how united the community is.

That's the whole point of private groups. That's why people use them.

Well, that's fine. I don't know if you've heard, but there are other forumsTaking away something people want to force them to do stuff they don't want to do is stupid. Your idea is stupid.

Games I like:,
Half-Minute Hero
MBU
Portal
Halo 3 is the best Halo ever
Maps I like: Turf, Avalanche, Pylon, Sandbox, Breakpoint and many more.

So you'd force a bunch of people to either quit or go to the mains? Please.

Seriously, check this out.

With the way the moderators interact with this community, and they way they handle problems, coupled with the fact that the discussions going on in public forums are terrible... I think I'll stick with my moderator free groups.

"So much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories." John Williams

As Achilles and Gravemind already pointed out, this has been done before and it doesn't go the way you think it will go. If people can't have their groups, they will just leave.

I love my groups for what they are, private. Sometimes I don't care to post my opinion on something in the mains, but we'll have a discussion about a particular thread. Most of the time I'm discussing it with friends anyways. You can't force people to change their habits, they will just leave.

There are groups that are for purposes that we don't even imagine. You would have completely re-think how organization would happen on bungie.net.

>Where would community carnages be brainstormed?
>What about community Joes?
>Moderators and staff need hideouts moderating reasons
>Cliques of friends that gather here on a daily basis to just talk with friends, would no longer be able to.
>Private groups for specific purposes, FAQ, AYN, Destiny Groups, Bungie Wiki's, One of Seven etc (the list is endless)

Maybe you don't make interesting topics, or you make topics people are already discussing? If you post something interesting that does not already have 30 other threads, you won't just get "k" or "old"

Positive vibes.

How counterproductive. If Bungie were to temporarily disable groups, a large majority of the bungie.net population would pull up stakes. There are more than a handful of people on this website that visit solely for the private groups that they are a part of. Disabling the very thing that brings them back would only encourage them to vacate from the community, not participate.

Don't rage quit just yet, let me at least try and convince you that groups should be disabled from 2 week or a month.

As others have observed, this forum has a large amount of its activity come from members who's majority of activity take place in groups. I don't see anything wrong with that, and I understand the desire to get away from a forum, and talk to members you are more familiar with. However, at the moment, I think this is actually detrimental to the community as a whole.

Disabling groups would force activity back into the public forums. At the moment, with significant portions of the community going to 343 or other more active game websites, the community is smaller than it will be shortly. This means that it is the best time to bring more activity to the public forum and try and bring the community closer together. As we prepare as a community to bring in new members with the announcement of "Destiny" and other future Bungie projects, I think it would be beneficial to have a more united community.
