Subject: Groups should be temporarily disabled.

Don't rage quit just yet, let me at least try and convince you that groups should be disabled from 2 week or a month.

As others have observed, this forum has a large amount of its activity come from members who's majority of activity take place in groups. I don't see anything wrong with that, and I understand the desire to get away from a forum, and talk to members you are more familiar with. However, at the moment, I think this is actually detrimental to the community as a whole.

Disabling groups would force activity back into the public forums. At the moment, with significant portions of the community going to 343 or other more active game websites, the community is smaller than it will be shortly. This means that it is the best time to bring more activity to the public forum and try and bring the community closer together. As we prepare as a community to bring in new members with the announcement of "Destiny" and other future Bungie projects, I think it would be beneficial to have a more united community.

Why would disabling groups bring the activity to the mains? If people who come here for the groups wanted to post on the mains, they would.

And why would it unite the community?

People who post in groups aren't purist to the groups. Most people who use groups also post in the mains actively. What OP is saying is that if the groups were disabled for about two weeks, the people who post in both would spend that extra time they used to use in groups back in the main forums.

If you disable groups the people who are coming here solely for groups aren't going to start enjoying the mains again, they're just going to stop coming at all.

Exactly. Disabling groups won't bring them to the mains. Thats like saying since B&R closed, everyone will go to coldstone...Thats just poor logic.

But Coldstone is good.

I didn't enjoy the mains that much when Bungie last disabled groups. I see no indication that things would change if they did it again (barring small maintenance or actually upgrading the features)

I think he's theorizing that while groups are down, people would settle with the next best thing: Public Forums.

Positive vibes.

You are failing to realize that whereas there are people who visit both private groups and the public forums, a fair majority of the people on this website visit solely for private groups; and even if they do post in the mains, my guess is they are much more drawn to private groups, and to have them disabled would only push them further away from this website, rather than draw them closer.

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." -Johnny Cash

If you temporarily disabled groups for any amount of time, nothing good would come of it. Sure, it would force more people to post in the mains, but it would mostly consist of people complaining about groups being disabled.

Relax, they aren't all pony related.

...which can't really be said about my Deviant Art Page however.

Now think about this very hard OP.

Do you REALLY want all the content of "my" most frequented group to spill out into the rest of the forums unchecked? That's far over 15 thousand pages of a certain little factor most users on the internet can't handle seeing once.

Personally, I'd like to just remain with the friends I have on here where I know that we can talk and just be ourselves without being condescended on by several hundred users a day. I actively jump into topics on the mains that interest me and I believe others do too. If its interesting enough they'll post. Shutting down private groups would flood the moderators and possibly drive hundreds of users off this site to others they can all frequent collectively as they have here. Wouldn't that be worse for the community anyway?

I've seen worse things on the internet more than once, but I understand what you're getting at.

I just wish I could participate a lot in my groups and get mythic on the mains. I just feel inferior on the mains with all the blue painting my monitor lol. So I stay on the groups that I'm in because it's more interesting.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

No.

I'm mostly on my group TFS, but I still go on the main forums daily. Mostly Universe and sometimes here.

There ARE some groups that contain worse things on the internet that reside here as well.

Chief vs the scarab? I find that hard to believe to roundhouse boot the scarab's figurative emotion out of the gaming zone.

I'm sure I'm late to the party here, but this is one of the worst ideas ever. People like me would just not come here until the groups were back up again.

  • 09.04.2012 12:47 PM PDT

I'm tired of the rant of just the idea of it. as long as people are active what else matters? If there is an important thread, they will come.

I think strong ties in private groups do nothing but strengthen the community.

So I respectfully disagree.

Especially when it comes to fan fiction, those groups friking rock.

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

Who's to say that disabling groups won't cut the community even further. Make people completely inactive?
