Subject: My thoughts on The Septagon: "Why so serious?"

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

Yes, yes. Perfect use of my favorite line of my favorite movie by one of the best acting performances of all time, by far.

NOTE: This isn't directed towards everyone!

Anyways, for those who don't have the slightest clue as to what "The Septagon" is, you are viewing this thread which is in the "Bungie Community" forum which is properly known as "The Septagon".

Now, as stated in the title this thread, there isn't a problem here but more of an inconvenience or annoyance really. See the fine print under "Bungie Community" up there on the forum header? It says, "A gathering place for the Bungie community". Back in the day, as a Bungie community, we would discuss Halo, Myth, Oni, online playlists and gameplay, community events, and whatever the big title or fad of that day was.

Right now, we are in the infamous "dark". We don't have anything to talk or complain about (albeit a bug here and there). We can make suggestions to the website all we want but I don't visit B.net to read suggestions. I come here to see what everyone is talking about. I'm not so much a random-minded person to stay in the Flood for extended amounts of time and I don't like the super fast pace either. I like to come here for some slower paced ideas, events, interesting theories, and occasional laughs. I feel the fun is being sucked away by members who treat this place almost as if it is there duty to make sure everything is spick and span with no bending of the not so black and white rules (if that makes any sense). I don't like the interweb term but there seems to be a little sense of forum-copping going around.

It kind of feels like we got the old, cranky substitute teacher who doesn't allow talking.

Now I'm not saying the moderators don't allow us to have fun conversations every now and then. I mean the webmaster posted that news story giving hilarious feedback over social networks and whatnot (I only skimmed the story) so that obviously shows we really REALLY don't have much to talk about.

So what is killing the fun? Those who refuse to have a little laugh and very subtly derail a thread into a disaster. I've noticed more and more that I have to use "OT:" more often than I used to just to avoid being caught in an infamous carpet ban.

But hey, maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm the only one who realizes B.net is in one of those potholes on the activity chart and maybe I'm the only one who realizes that is because there really is nothing to talk about. But I think everyone should take a breath and relax a little. Those who still visit, the few dedicated and loving members who still love this place enough to keep it a part of their daily lives, try to enjoy it a little more.

For a while, all we did was complain about titles. That evolved into nothing about "Elitism" threads. These along with the "No more Halo discussions" have sort of disappeared and for a while, this forum was a pretty friendly place. Let's not lose that!

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Also this.

Honestly, I think there's more of a problem if a community isn't divided. If everyone is on the same neutral ground then things get cold pretty fast. Disagreements and "drama" are good for the community in my opinion. It keeps things interesting and it stirrs up the waters. It keeps you sharp, and honestly I kind of wish the mods would let things progress a little further rather than lock threads right away.

I am a person of balance, however. I do think the community should be a little more close-knit and have a more interpersonal feel to it. It's nice to have those members who aren't always a -blue!- towards each other. It's good to have people on your side and people who contribute to the discussion in a healthy manner. That doesn't mean that the other people who stirr things up aren't healthy to the community though. I just think the community gets babied a little too much.

GOAT

It's that infectious Mythic ego and utter hatred for anything that doesn't have a chance for a reply from the golden ones.

Whenever someone posts a thread that isn't about the site itself, people say it belongs in the Flood and/or that its spam. I think "a gathering place for the community" can mean any topic that gets us to talk about ourselves/our relation to halo/bungie or anything.

It's like people want to shut down discussion.

I'd love to see quality threads promoting discussion in the Community. Right now, the Mail Sack is acting as a defibrillator for the community, with our threads being faint pulses that sometimes explode into...something that resembles life?

If we, the Community could come up with some more fun ways to interact with one another (moar Community Carnage, small groups of people organizing and play games together, Average Joes, etc...) I really feel we could make this a better place.

Enough with the conspiracies, dragons, and popularity, let's just 'get up' and do something that can make this Community more of a whole.

I also think Bungies next game should have something similar to the Recon Armor in Halo 3. Those were the days.... Main reason why I joined B.net in the first place actually, that and for Bungie Favorites.

I loved the Vidmaster challenges to death. If Bungie adds any challenge that can you earn you some sort of bragging right or a 'Hey, I just beat that challenge? WOOT!', they can count me in.

The Bungie nameplate in Reach wasn't cool enough. I also thought Recon was cooler when it was more exclusive, like when it was extremely hard to get it since it required being noticed by Bungie through indirect means. It forced the community to be creative and put effort into what they were doing. Common goals are nice.

When I grow up I want to be bitter and spiteful.

"i liked the reality where everything was on fire better"
-legato on remedial chaos theory

Perhaps the rules need to be accommodated for only semi-relevant discussion that most consider "off-topic".

In my view, this forum is still adamantly (hypocritically) amicable towards itself, and I will not rest until this is stopped.

I got nothing.

Yeah, Recon really lost it when it was more open. I joined around when they began thinking of adding the Vidmasters. So, I'd like a mix of both recognition by Bungie and extremely hard challenges. It'd spice things up a bit.

I kid about the sucking part, obviously... Mind you, if someone is too serious they may be offended by this. And to that, I respond with... You suck.

One who is a master of insults and kidding are those who can take an insult or joke and make it seems as if he or she was offended and make the original insulter (if that's a word) have to explain that he or she was merely kidding.

Key

Are you suggesting it be an alternative Flood where we can discuss whatever we want? Because that's what it sounds like, IMO.

  • 09.02.2012 8:47 PM PDT

I don't see any problem with people taking this site too seriously. The only users I see bumming the fun are the really new members who haven't been acclimated to the atmosphere we've established here.
