Subject: New Avatars for older members? UPDATE: New Idea

Think you can take me in NHL12? Send me a message/invite

So after changing my avatar 3 times in the past 24 hrs, (it'll probably change again throughout this thread) I thought 'why doesn't bungie give us older members new avatars/upload your own'.

I know for obvious reasons uploading avatars are not permitted, but I feel that for those who have been here for 2-3 years minimum should be granted permission to do so. I highly doubt someone who's been here that long will go and upload nudes and take the ban.

If that doesn't sound like a good idea, how about pre-approved avatars. Much like how you get titles, you can get avatars. Simple enough.

I know this probably won't happen, but just a suggestion. I think this would have had a better chance happening a few years ago, but what the hell. YOLO, right?

I just hate not being able to find my post right away and/or being confused by another user with the same avatar.

EDITITED: New Idea

In order to prevent the 'elitism' that is sucha big deal devote a good junk of the 'older members' to a team that is responsible for approving avatars. Each 'avatar mod' is assigned an avatar change request, and if they let one slip, they can lose their privileges (Obviously in the web coding you can say what user went to what 'mod').

To stop abuse and keep a steady pace on accepting/denying avatars, make it so you can only change your avatar every 48 hours, or something along those lines.

New thoughts?

Subject: New Avatars for older members?

We've talked about title-related avatars before, but we haven't heard anything from the webteam on it. It would be cool though.

  • 09.02.2012 10:12 PM PDT

Pointless idea. Anyone who has been here long enough to be considered an old member shouldn't be changing their avatar, and those who would make use of such a feature are bad people and we shouldn't be catering to them anyway.

I agree with you, although I think it should be a mixture of trust rating and time. Because there are certainly some older members here I still would not trust. In any case, I could actually see this being implemented when the webteam roles out bungie.next (New Hawtness: I expect another kitten to be killed). Although I don't even know if I'd change my avatar. As generic and over-used as it may be, I've had it for quite a while and do not feel overly inclined to change.

I don't see the point of having new avatars. I would just keep the one I have since some users tend to recognize me from this avatar.

I originally had my H3 model, then switched about a year or two ago.

I'm not a bad person either... And I'd make good use of it.

I've had my avatar since i became Legendary. I think that was almost two years ago. Most older members don't change their avatars.

Also, obviously, it would enforce elitism.

Clearly. Just like any conceivable idea that relates to titles.

My avatar changes simply because I see it being used too much and it throws me off.

Also, you're title causes elitism

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

It definitely shouldn't be based off of account age, but on trust rating.

I haven't changed my avatar since ODST came out :D

I also like the "trust rating" idea Xplode mentioned. There always going to be elitism, so there's no way to avoid that.

Similar to that of the title bars

Well, most of them do. And if you don't believe me, consider the fact that the OP set requirements for this new privilege he suggested, which he's conveniently already met. How often do you see an untitled member suggesting that the older/titled members need more privileges?

I'd like to believe that we could have more privileges without abusing them, or acting like we're better people because of them, but this is the internet. It brings out the worst in people.

No offense intended to the OP. It's just that it's hard to say elitism isn't the problem when Legendary+ members suggest more privileges for Legendary + members.

Fine. Give only Mythics with Honorable or above the privilege. I do not begrudge them extra abilities based on their trust rating. They have, for the most part, earned it. Oh, and I won't be Mythic any time soon, so I assure you that there is no benefit for me.

IMO, still a bad idea. Like i said, the internet brings out the worst in people. Being a Mythic doesn't mean you wont abuse things. They get banned and warned more frequently than you might believe. I know two Mythics that lost their title in the last few weeks alone. One of them being me.

I'm just saying that it seems petty to say that someone is more deserving of something based on title, account age, or anything like that. Avatars mean that much to you, why not use coup?

At first, I stated for those been here 2-3 years. I surpassed that, going onto my 5th year...

You're missing the main point I made... I just want it so I can better differentiate my posts from other members, especially when the guy with the same avatar as me pops into the thread and posts directly before/after me.

You could make the requirement 6 months of activity for all I care, I was just suggesting 2-3 years so abusers wouldn't...abuse.

I guess the old ad-on 'coup' would better explain my point I'm trying to make

edit:

Coups an ad on that can easily be hacked and make my account and pc vulnerable. I trust Bungie more than a 3rd party.

I hated having to deal with peoples annoying color schemes and all that anyway... all i want is a simple avatar...

Oh, you lost your mythic... i can see why you're upset with this... lol

It's not that avatars are important, it's that I am always a supporter of useful or just cool features, when they can be implemented without being abused. But yes, you are right. I am sure some older mythic member somewhere would post a picture of some nude lady and ruin it for everyone. Perhaps, however, because there are relatively few members that would fall into the criteria of eligibility and interest, the forum ninjas could screen potential avatars. I doubt they would thank bungie for giving them that extra hassle, but it is an option.

Why?

Why shouldn't someone who has been a member for a long time be rewarded?
Why shouldn't someone who has been well behaved be rewarded?
etc...

Posts should stand out based on content, not avatars. And like i said, if you do care so much about avatars, why not just use coup? Then anyone can have any avatar they want.

As for me, i like B.net with the current system. I like how every member, regardless of age or trust rating, has the same access to themes, avatars, forums, or whatever. And that's what i dislike about any 'perk' catered toward any specific group of members. It's sill to say any one member is more deserving of something than another, especially based of something as generic as age or trust rate, because neither of those are an actual judge of character.

That's jut my thoughts on the matter.

It's because we don't want to hurt your sensitive feelings. That, and I am afraid that any avatar I'd upload would get eaten by those of you and your fellow ninjas. They are all downright creepy.

Not at all. I don't regret losing my Mythic. I broke a rule, and i deserved it. And, regardless, i'd still meet the qualifications of said reward. I have a 3+ year old account and i have the trust rating of a Fabled Legendary member. If you really don't believe me, go back and skim my old posts. I can guarantee, you'll never find me saying anything different on a matter like this. Not when i was Mythic, and not before i had it.

QFT

You wouldn't go to work if you didn't get paid, would you?
That's exactly it. I go to work at 8 in the morning 5-6 days out of the week. I put in hours of physical labor, and finally go home with a sore back. What do i get for that? A little bit of cash. I check in here for a few minutes most days. Same thing? This isn't work. This is a forum.

Why should someone get rewarded for talking about games? Get rewarded for 'following the rules?' The rules, in the simple version, say "Don't be a jerk." I don't know about you, but i've tried to be a decent guy all my life and nobody's ever given me a reward for not being a jerk.

It's just how you should act. You should follow the rules not for a reward, but because you don't want to be an asshat to other members. You should post not to earn rewards, but because you like the community and the people that make it what it is.

As i said before, it just seems silly. It's a forum. On the internet. People take it so seriously and act like people deserve rewards just because they've been here longer. Or have a better "trust rating." But when you really think about it, and older account just means you found it first, and took the time to hang out here occasionally. A trust rating just means you either weren't a prick or where never caught being a prick. I don't see why someone would deserve a reward for stopping by occasionally and acting like a semi decent human being.

It's different with something truly earned. For example, if someone where to win some sort of contest, or somehow wow the webteam enough to earn something along the lines of a special title, avatar, or whatever feature you want to imagine. However, the rest of us are just average joes hanging out cuz we like Bungie. Why does being an average joe for a longer period of time make you more deserving of anything?

Short version, to directly answer dazz's question.

You should be an active member for a long time because you like the community, not for a reward.

You should behave out of courtesy, not for a reward.

If you truly think rewards are necessary for simply not breaking rules for an extended period of time, isn't that exactly what the title system is for?

Obviously, and as i've stated several times, this is simply my opinion. And to each his own. I just personally think it's silly to reward someone basically for existing and not attempting to harm others. If you disagree with me, then that's your thing. I'm just saying that i prefer the current system where all members have equal access to such features.
