Subject: New Avatars for older members?

God made 10 kinds of people. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

EAKLE,

I agree that rewarding people just for being good can send the wrong message. At the same time, I think that giving people rewards for doing the right thing has its place too. The Army has a "Good Conduct Medal" for enlisted soldiers who have been good for three consecutive years. It's not uncommon to be fair with both rewards and punishments.

Regarding your real life attempts to be a decent human, I would argue that your reputation reflects your efforts. True, in today's society it's not worth as much as it used to at first glance. I would argue though that there are circles where a decent reputation is extremely valuable and has many rewards.

Personally, I want an updated Avatar when I retire. That'd be so wizard.

Completely true, but can't the same be said here? For the most part, by the time a person builds a reputation they've already reached some form of titled status. But some people do it early than that, and a member with a plan "Member" title will be known as a good guy, and intelligent poster, a source of news or whatever. As in real life, being a good person has its own rewards.

And don't get me wrong guys, i'd rock a custom avatar all day every day. I do on any site that allows it. But i've personally never seen a site that only allows it for specific members, outside of webteam and moderation staff. If we're going to trust the community with avatars, i'd prefer to see them available to all members.

I wouldn't mind some new avatars for everyone.

The ninjas wouldn't feel as special, either, if everyone got a custom avatar.
But they still get to type in a pretty colour.

+1 for you good sir.

I haven't changed my avatar since I made my account. Bam.

Real account.

Join me as we make new friends from different communities!

If you assign every letter of the alphabet a number, a is 1, b is 2, etc., and you take all of the values of the word "MATH", and add them, you get 42. So math is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

Sure, what could go wrong?

I've had my avatar since i became Legendary. I think that was almost two years ago. Most older members don't change their avatars.

Also, obviously, it would enforce elitism.

I changed my avatar when the new avatars came out. ;0

Does that makes me an elitist?

  • 09.02.2012 11:39 PM PDT

I think the title system is enough.

Mythic members are like people with tattoos. Just as soon as you become a Mythic member, you can kick anyone's ass. It really works.

I remember when my account turned 4 thinking how much of an old-blam!- I was.
I would like to see perhaps more avatar selection for "older" members. However, when you give people(read: "normal" people) the ability to upload anything there's always going to be someone to ruin it for everyone and upload -blam!- or something stupid that gets it shut down and disappoints everyone using it. I'd prefer to just skip that altogether, but that's just me.

A combination of the two, would probably be best.

Custom avatars would cool. But the Ninjas wouldn't be so special, unless they could post pictures in the forums! That'd be a laugh or two.

My Screenshots / My Group / Remember to follow the rules or you will get trapped in a box.

Yeah this would be nice. I wouldn't mind some exclusive avatars.

Pointless idea. Anyone who has been here long enough to be considered an old member shouldn't be changing their avatar, and those who would make use of such a feature are bad people and we shouldn't be catering to them anyway.
Do you have a Batman pager set for avatar threads?

I'm just saying that it seems petty to say that someone is more deserving of something based on title, account age, or anything like that.
Why?

Why shouldn't someone who has been a member for a long time be rewarded?
Why shouldn't someone who has been well behaved be rewarded?
etc...

What would be the standard though? Would you look at time spent here and ban history?

  • 09.03.2012 4:43 AM PDT

I won't mind getting some new emblems for me and the rest of the 2 years and up, it's just that I don't think I'll use it.

I'm down with that.

People get bent out of shape with rank, status, class, etc. It's elitism at its core and individuals who aren't comfortable with themselves oftentimes look for outside validation. Not that anyone in our community would need to do such a thing.

But seriously, I retire in 10 years. I want a custom avatar. Cause I'll be old :)

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC
