Halo 2 special edition came with the packet Conversations from the Universe. You can read them here:
http://haloarchives.net/pages/conversations-from-the-universe /conversation-nine.php

The ninth conversations, the one is hyperlinked, talks of Cassandra, a Spartan that was in critical condition in the early years of the war.

Now, as many of you know, Bungie likes Mythology. Much of the halo plot is from the Greek and Roman war time period. Also, many of the characters are from Mythological gods and groups. ( i.e. Tarturus, Spartans) However, Cassandra is one of these Roman gods. You can find out more info on Cassandra here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandra

Cassandra is well known as a fortune-teller, given this gift from Apollo. This is a quote from a Mythology book: "given the power of prophecy by Apollo. When she spurned his love, he could not take back the gift, but stipulated that no one would ever believe her." It is also said that she would foretell evil or bad things. This last part is what caught my eye. Here are some quotes from Cassandra’s note:

“but the choice to incorporate further Covenant technology somehow makes my skin crawl.”

“Today, humanity feels pale and thin with only ghosts to defend her heart. I feel much the same”

These are particularly interesting; they seem a LOT like foreshadowing. The only reason they seem somewhat important though is because a Spartan, by the name of Cassandra, said them. But what could she be foretelling?

Now that I’m done, I am sure you flamers are heating up, so let it rip.

“but the choice to incorporate further Covenant technology somehow makes my skin crawl.”

This is to the new armor in Halo 2, this letter has been written when they upgraded the Halo CE armor, don't remember what number, so bad with roman numbers

“Today, humanity feels pale and thin with only ghosts to defend her heart. I feel much the same”

Could mean that the Elites, grunts and hunters are allying with the humans, that their ghosts will be valuable in the comming war

But I don't know, my guesses

I was thinking along those lines as well...but i wanted to see what everyone else said first. I also think that the MC, since the armor is covenant technology, might backfire or something...maybe make him go mad or some crap like that. But i doubt it. Again, I will state that she foretold BAD things becuase she was cursed.

This could be a reference to a reference. A poem. "This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang, but a whimper". Humanity is giving up?

Well, if this theory is true, which there is too much of a coincidence with Bungie and mythology, then something about covenant techonolgy is going to back fire for the humans, or possibly the convenant?

Covies use foreruner tech so that "backfire" may be the halo activations; that is if it backfires in the covies.

--==3DI7==--

Or it can work the otherway. What if the Halo can't wipe out the flood? That would be a backfire to. Since it's missing a halo there should be (is?) a gap somewhere in that radii. SO it might just miss earth.

--==3DI7 4GAIN==--

So, what if instead of killing the infadels (humans) it just kills covies. Like what I said above. It misses earth by like 500 miles. (sweet ass cutscene at the end of the game). Hence the end of the war. "finish the fight"

I like it...that would be a cool ending. There was a theory, an OLD theory, that someone did the math and figured that no matter were the halos were placed, they would miss the edge of the milky way, aka Earth... I am going to go and find that forum real fast, hold on.

The letter was writen before he got to cairo I think. One guy said she wrote it before MC got Mark V, but your wrong, she mentuned Mark VI.

Also, you said that she reminded you of that "not with a bang but a wimper poem" thats not valid, cortana said it would go with a bang. She meant something deeper probably.

I am...whimsical today.

They wouldn't need to necessarily cover the whole Galaxy, just the places where the Forerunners lived, and where the Flood spread to.

Good stuff about Cassandra :) It was kinda bugging me what her name was from. Bungie seem to love their Classics...and their Norse

Well...according to this forum about the placement of halos, Earth was out of reach. Possibly the forerunners purposely placed it so it wouldn't harm them? Also, I think it was Mark VI armor.

Procrastination never ends...

Good work. One thing is that Cassandra isn't a roman god as I recall. In the trilogy of plays known as the Oresteia, Cassandra is mortal, cursed as a fortuneteller, and captured as a war prize be king Agamemnon during the Trojan War. Agamemnon sacrificed his daughter to have fair weather to set sail, and Cassandra fortells his death at the hands of his wife, Clytemnestra. If Cassandra is in fact mentioning the use of covenant tech in Chief's armor, Bungie could have linked the tale to the point of Cortana turning on the Chief. A stretch, but possible.

jester, you are correct. i was just giving the important details for people. And yes, i do know Spartans are not gods, there were a group of people from the State of Sparta, which were known for there endurance and hardcore army.

It states that Cassandra is a spartan in the Conversations from the Universe. Also in other printings.

Now, does any one else have an idea to what she is hinting at?

This is what it says...

117,

As you might imagine - though I know you won't-
I've heard quite a bit of your recent adventures on
the Halo. I'm glad you made it; I have to asume you
always will. Recovery is going well and I am proceeding
on to fourth-stage rehabilitation. It is significantly
more painful than previous stages, but I'm happy to be
skinned once again.

I hear that you will be testing the new Mark VI.
I will definitely look for reports on how it works
out. The specs are obviously improved, but the choice to
incorporate further Covenant technology somehow makes
my skin crawl.

We miss you, John. I've asked Sergeant Johnson to let
me know if you're ever near the M2SL Recovery Station
and perhaps I'll be able to come see you. I'm hoping I'll
have the chance soon. Today, humanity feels pale and
thin with only ghosts to defend her heart. I fell much
the same.

I'll write again.

-Cassandra

I think Cassandra is another Spartan.
Nice theory.

Just notised the the link you put. :P

There is a possibilty she isnt a Spartan, but I doubt it. She sounds like a Spartan, why else would the MC have contact? The Spartans were his only family.

Yay, deadly has got something there...but if forerunners are humans (theory)...then everything is connected. Maybe it will just backfire for the convenant, like prophets idea.

I missed her saying it would go out with a bang.
Where could I find this?

"Your poet Eliot had it wrong. This is the way the world ends."

Eliot spoke of a slow, methodical, quiet end. Kinda. I think.

Ok, thanks.
