Yes--track 'em and keep quitters away from me!:  77%

No--I love waiting for the game to "set up" :  4%

I don't care--I have fun regardless:  19%

Quitting plagues current Halo 2 online play. Quitters affect gameplay by:

1. Slowing down gameplay by the transitioning everybody to the "blue set up screen" during a match. A significant portion of my online gameplay involves watching said blue screen. That is not fun or cool.
2. Stacking the odds against their teammates. This is not fun or cool and often causes more people to quit feeding into number 1 above.

I feel the best way to remedy this situation is to track quitters. Thus, people who quit alot can be optimally matched with fellow quitters. If you have to quit INFREQEUNTLY, which is understandable, then it shouldn't impact your quitting rank or the quality of players you are matched with. However, those who quit on a consistent basis will earn a high quitting rank and be matched with individuals who share the same gaming "style".

I seem to remember that Yahoo games has a similar feature in their online games called "games completed" (or something to that effect) which was expressed as a percentage. When I used to play chess online, I could avoid playing undesirable people, and i truely hope such a feature can be implemented in Halo 3 to improve everybody's play.

In fact, I was just thinking you could even possibly work this into achievements. How about an "ironhorse" or "intenstinal fortitude" achievement with "x number" of COMPLETED, SEQUENTIAL online matches? (500+ or 1000+ games perhaps?)

Any comments welcome.

Well I think Bungie should definitely incorporate these features into Halo 3 then. Seriously, I'd have to say at least 75% of my games will have a quitter in them.

I think your stat is a good idea, but what will it accomplish? Using the state to keep quiters away from you is fine, but then who do they get matched up with? Unless they get banned, they have to get matched with [i[someone[/i]. Maybe they could get matched with only other quiters, but then that would split the groups of people. Non quiters and quiters, may not seem bad, but what if you have a bad connection like I do. My router cuts the connection for some reason when I host games of more than 10 people. And sometimes my dad has to reset the network and turns it off. Bungie says they can tell when someone is standbying or honestly have a bad connection, I am so far living proof that they can. But I would still get that accounted towards my quiting stat thing of yours, and probably end up with the quiters.

The truth is that with something like that, you can't keep inocent casualties down like you can with bans for modding or standbying, or bridging.

Do you think you can handle my gigantic COC?
~!TheHalo3D!~
-If your car could travel at the speed of light, would your headlights work?
-What happens if you get scared half to death twice?
-I intend to live forever; so far, so good.

The only reason I ever quit is because the host of a match has a 56k connection, or cheaters. So I don't think having my "Quitting rank" go up because I got matched with one of these is FUN or COOL. Look now all the people that quit will be getting matched with *GASP* other quitters! while cheaters are getting matched with other innocent people which doesn't solve any problems

I think it's a wonderful idea! I say track them and once they are identified make them play with eachother when they go on matchmaking and let them see how much fun it is.

On the other hand, one should have to quit many times before being identifies as a quiter. Mainly because; Witch hunts are -blam!- and for all we know their mothers just died or something. I think a person should have to quit many more times than what is reasonable to be marked.

I see the problem this way - if I'm on a skirmish game, let's say 4 v 4 Assult on Zanzibar, and people start to quit. First, one person quits and because the resulting chances of success are low, the chances are that another person quits (this is what I call the THREE barrier, sometimes you'll get three that stay). If a second person quits (leaving two people, breaking the "THREE Barrier"), then it is almost inevitable that the third quits. Usually, I'm the guy stuck 1 vs 4 at that point because I don't usually quit. However, if you stay in the entire time, the other team frequently becomes upset that you don't just quit and you waste quite a bit of their time. OR, they start span killing, following each kill doing rude gestures over your body as if they're great players for killing you when it's 1 vs 4, and supplimenting their "ego" with this spectacular 4 on 1 kill. Following the match, the language that one may hear is many times rather rude and offensive. MORE TO THE POINT: they start saying how you are a lousy player, EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW IT WAS 4 ON 1! Idiots, stupids, dumb-dumbs (sorry for the language guys). I'd rather just quit. At this point, I usually do.

There's one flaw I noticed with this arguement, and any other related post like it...

You CANNOT, I repeat, CANNOT punish someone because they decide to quit a game.

Big deal, get over it, they quit. It's their decision and not yours if they can quit or not. Do I like quitters, not exactly. Yes it gets annoying, but oh well; like I said, get over it. If you're all worried about people quitting and lowering your rank, or just plain pissing you off, do what most people do and find other players on XBox LIVE to play in a party with... vwa la! No quitters! Halo 2 is unique in the fact that not a lot of games can do this.

For all those that think it's punishable, then don't forget to give a boot in the ass to your friends when you're playing via one xbox, and someone decides to quit playing because they've got to go to the bathroom, leave, go home, get some food, get a drink, take a break, mow the lawn, clean their room, walk the dog, etc, etc etc... Need I go on?

I don't know how many times I've seen this... geesh... If it's that big a deal, send some friend invites, it's the #1 solution to avoiding games where people drop out simply because they don't like a particular game.

"It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me."

How about cheaters instead...but the 360 already has this set up I believe.

My point is not to punish people if they have to quit INFREQUENTLY. I never really defined "frequent" quitting and this system will take a quite a bit of fine tuning I'm sure. I think a reasonable goal would be to quit less than 5% of your games. Anyway, I've had to log off on a few occasions to appease the wife, avert a kitchen fire, etc. I understand that there are peope out there with kids/families/crappy connections, and I'm not out to punish them. Its those people who quit in a heartbeat when the game doesn't go their way, when their favorite game type doesn't pop up, etc. that I would like to be insulated from. I'm truely not exagerating when I say approximately 75% of my games have people quit. That is simply unacceptable. I feel I spend about 20% of my time online actually playing and the other 80% of my time waiting for the game to start or in the pregame lobby/matchmaking.

On a side note, for those of you with really bad connections that fail often, I'm sorry but I don't think I should be have to play with you all... I feel for you as I used to have crappy cable lines in my old apartment and I would get dropped VERY frequently which whould upset me to no end. However, when I was in that situation, I realized it wasn't fun for my friends to game with me. So, I think its only fair you get matched with people who drop out (i.e. quit) as often as you do.

I know controlling quitters goes beyond just tracking it, but I do think it is part of the solution.
Allowing more control over matchmaking options so you end up in a game you really wanna be in would also help.

Any other comments/suggestions/solutions??

Ok, if you quit b/c games are -blam!- then why do you play that playlist? Or better yet, why do you play the game at all? No offense but quitters and lil kids are plaguing this game so bad. I don't understand why parents would just leave their son Online in a game just to yell profanities and be obnioux or quit.

  • 06.25.2006 12:18 AM PDT

Why have this, when on the 360 you can now avoid players that you don't want to be matched with again. The tools are alot better now for xbox 360's xbox live.

I'm unfamiliar with what the 360 offers as far as avoiding certain players. However, you make it sound like avoiding a quitter would be retroactive. I'm describing a proactive system that would stop you from ever having to play somebody who quits alot to begin with.

Does the 360 let you filter out people who quit alot so you never, ever have to even deal with them??? If so, this post should die. If not, I dearly desire Bungie to implement a feature such as this. It irks me people drop out of games soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo often. Even though I play mainly unranked games and don't care too much if I get ganged up on, I get so miffed that time is wasted on the setup screen.

Yes, that EA option sounds wonderful as it will let you decide your own tolerance to quitters! I feel comforted knowing that such a feature has already been worked into some 360 games... I'll just cross my fingers for now and hope it gets implemented into Halo 3. :)

that would be cool but if we did that then half of the people wouldnt connect cuz u blocked all the quiters...remeber u can be playing then have to go do something important like...I dont know maybe eat or all ur dirty F**ks who dont shower can go and do so...or have to go the store or whatever....then u would have to quit

They should just add a new playlist call it "no punks allowed" : When the game starts no one can quit! and when you pause the game, instead of saying "Leave game" it just says "Stay and fight" The only problem to this would be Modders Cheating or Laggy connection but since Halo 3 is on Xbox 360 there will not be alot of modders

i like this idea. i hate when you get an objective game in matchmaking and theres a simultaneous chorus of "-blam!- this" and then multiple quit outs. this is even frustrating in rumble games. today i got matched up with 7 people in rumble training, and we got oddball on lockout. i was excited, but then 5 people quit resulting in a 2 minute blue screen. the game ended up being really fun, but still. people just seem to hate objective games, when i love them.

EDIT: this method shouldnt be employed if it cant discern the difference between lagging out and selecting leave game.

A good idea would be to just remove the option to quit from the start menu. The only way that you can quit during a game would be to turn of your 360 or severe your connection. I can't stand it when people just quit because they don't like the game type or "I just played this map twice in a row." Don't give people the option to quite!
