Subject: What does this community mean to you?

Posted by: Kurosaki_Kun

I know, right?
Jay acts like she's better than everyone else simply because she's a chick.
I hope she chokes to death.

Such a generic-sounding question, I know. But I was thinking about this the other day. I've met a lot of great people on this site, and ended up meeting some of them in real life - I even met my partner here, and we've been together more than a year now. So when people brush off the negative effects of flaming/trolling because "it's just the internet", I find myself thinking - well, not it's not, is it? There are real people posting here, with real thoughts and feelings. It's not "just the internet" at all - it's a community as real as any community in meatspace.

I realise not all people see it that way - but I know some others must, because I've seen close and meaningful relationships forming between several people on this site. So, what does the community on this site mean to you? Is it just a source of amusement, or do you feel a sense of belonging here akin to what you might feel in real life communities?

You can always count on having at least one member who will care enough to make the first post... at least in my experience on here.

Yes, that's about right.

With a wide selection of people, comes a wide variety of friends. I've met some of my closest friends on the site.
:3

There are so many people on this site I really want to meet IRL some day. Can't wait for this December/January, where I should finally get to meet a bunch of them.

I kind of feel the same way. For the most part, I feel a little.. misplaced, even after 2 years of being around. That being said, 2 years is well enough time to get to know certain people on a personal level in some way. Those people that I have gotten to know are definitely a huge reason, if not the only reason, as to why I'm still around.

The End

‘The conscious is cancerous if allowed to linger’

"Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."

My relationship with the community as a whole was probably at its peak between 2010 and 2011.

I just had a little nostalgia trip and couldn't help but end with a hope I might one day be so passionate about a gaming community again, as I loved the level of influence and interaction I had during the era. Nowadays I find it difficult to compel myself to really properly engage with discussion, as my heart just isn't in it. The consequence of course is a lot of trashy throw-away one-liner posts.

That doesn't mean I don't have good friends from the community, or that I'm not a member of some good private groups, but in terms of my actual contributions I am not as involved as I have been in the past. At the moment I just try and keep the friendships I have going and am hoping to move the carnage group towards autonomy.

Posted by: Tom TDo you think you'll ever get to the stage where you'll feel motivated to have that kind of relationship with this community again, or have things happened in the interim that have made that impossible for you?

I have seen you future

This is a great community. I've made friends, and met all sorts of interesting people, and even though I've never met any in real life, I hope to someday.

  • 09.06.2012 8:07 AM PDT

Break down, every single one of you.

I really don't feel that I am part of a community here. Maybe it is because I spend most of my time here in the Flood and really don't want to be associated with some of the people there.

I would say that what CamCamm and deltahalo UK said applies to me as well. There are a few people here I know and who know me and we joke around sometimes. Honestly, nobody here recognizes me even though I have been around since 2008 except for a select few.

  • 09.06.2012 8:07 AM PDT

It's kind of a weird question to ask, especially from someone that doesn't post a lot. To me I don't know the community very well yet, I just decided to make this my new home recently as i'm giving up on my old game forum. What I have seen is that there is a lot of diversity in this group, sadly people that don't mind trashing Bungie, and those that stick with them through Absolute Zero conditions. the majority of every thread would be considered trolling in most forums, but there isn't much to go off of with the darkness surrounding everyone, so the trolling is instead more like a bonfire of people gathered waiting with high faith in this amazing Development Company.

To answer the question personally, not much now, but I look forward to being around and getting to know everyone's personality without prejudgment.

I honestly don't know, sorry.

For sake of discussion I will admit that being a moderator was a factor in my activity. Before I was a mod I hardly strayed from the community forum. It was the visibility that made me conform to a higher posting standard and gave me the incentive to try and have more of an influence in other aspects of the site. I am not altogether proud of how it sounds, but it is true. For this reason I am not necessarily opposed to the handing out of coloured text for community ambassadors, as is the case on the WoW forums. However I could just be a strange exception, as in general the moderator position has the opposite effect and turns active members into non-entities.

I think the knowledge that you're being watched is a strong motivator. In some people, it motivates them to seek the spotlight and use that attention positively, and in some people, it motivates them to become more reserved so that people only see the side of them they're willing to show. Neither of those reactions are necessarily right or wrong.

At the moment it is really just a place to have fun when I'm bored but I've gotten to the stage where I've started recognising members and they start recognising me so I guess over time I'll get more and more involved, and feel more of a connection to the community as I get to know more people.

We miss the cool tom the salmon tom :P

I love this community, it shows thriving evolution amongst it's members and as a whole. We work together to improve our existence here and fight each other for hell of it. There are always laughs and pat's on the back to be given out. The sheer brilliance of this community attracts me and inspires me to help as much as I possibly can contribute positively in every aspect that I am able too.

Cheers to you Bungie community, much love. <3

Yes Costco. I need a 50lb bag...I mean sack of sugar.

I've found that this site helps me build irrational hatred towards those I don't know.

I have not tried to make "friends" persay on this site because I don't put a lot of stock into online conversations. Of the few I do know in some fashion aside from the site I take seriously and/or care about their posts, but for the most part, I just like to come here to relax.

In the context of a moderator position I disagree.

If one accepts the position only to withdraw into a shell then I consider that particularly foolish. Moderating itself can be a chore and it is not worth a little 90x90 custom avatar for the crap one must contend with, particularly if it comes with the sacrifice of a personality that was previously valued in the community.

I did not ever enjoy using the tools, they were a necessary evil to be avoided whenever possible. What I did like was being able to provide a service for the community, through additional responsibility/influence. I think that if you're just in a the gig to moderate, or perceive yourself of having reached some milestone/plateau, you're doing it very wrong.

I agree that withdrawing completely once you're put in a position of influence seems foolish if you have the opportunity to use that influence to render a service for the community or contribute positively in other ways. But I can understand people feeling as though they have to talk less in order to reveal less of their true selves, because those selves might not meet certain professional standards to which they feel they must adhere. If the choice is between saying things that'll get you in trouble or saying less, I think most people in some kind of influential position would consider it prudent to do the latter.

Though I think that if someone's true self is in some way fundamentally incompatible with an organisation's professional ideals, they shouldn't be put in a position of power in the first place.
