Though I think that if someone's true self is in some way fundamentally incompatible with an organisation's professional ideals, they shouldn't be put in a position of power in the first place.
Spot on.
For almost everything else, there is tact.

With Freedom comes responsibility. Tom I agree with you man its more of a chore then a privilege, I could see it taking away from the experience on b.net with all the bs you have to put up with. I was an Administrator for a community of 75,000 strong and that was one hell of an operation to maintain and control. So I can only imagine how much responsibility it takes to be a moderator of millions.

Let me ask you this Tom just to clarify. Do you enjoy yourself more as a member or a moderator here on Bunige?

@spaboolly

I think it's a fun place to chill out and have a nice discussion. They may not be as frequent as some people would prefer, but they are here for those willing to look for them. I've also gotten to know some people pretty well through private groups, and I greatly value the friendships I've made here.

I mostly lurk around here, so I don't get as much of the community feeling. But apparently I'm more well-known than I thought I was >__>

Well put, like always Tom. I couldn't agree more, its not the title or the responsibilities you have here, but to what level you contribute in a positive manner and how involved you are.

My Bluddy. <3

I've made some genuine friends, like Bloody said in my time here, predominantly through private groups and my interactions within them, leading to interaction and such beyond the bonds of this site.

I enjoy being a part of the seventh column. It has its characters, but it has a heart of gold. I enjoy interacting both with Bungie and like minded individuals here, but I find it easier sometimes to take a back seat these days.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I have a lot of close friends on Bungie.net.

It's noticeably easier to find others that share similar interests on an internet community than in a physical community such as, say, a classroom or a workplace. That being said, it's arguably easier to initially connect with new individuals via an online community rather than in person.

Case and point: No awkward silence while the both of you try to come up with something to say to the other. I don't necessarily have 'friends' on this site that I've gotten to know personally, but there are people that I enjoy screwing around with, as well as making 100+ inside jokes.

It's always cool to present a topic to the users on this site, and in seconds, getting feedback. Quite efficient if you ask me.

Well, in real life, you can't just Google your interests and explore the search results, can you? XD

Such a generic-sounding question, I know. But I was thinking about this the other day. I've met a lot of great people on this site, and ended up meeting some of them in real life - I even met my partner here, and we've been together more than a year now. So when people brush off the negative effects of flaming/trolling because "it's just the internet", I find myself thinking - well, not it's not, is it? There are real people posting here, with real thoughts and feelings. It's not "just the internet" at all - it's a community as real as any community in meatspace.

I realise not all people see it that way - but I know some others must, because I've seen close and meaningful relationships forming between several people on this site. So, what does the community on this site mean to you? Is it just a source of amusement, or do you feel a sense of belonging here akin to what you might feel in real life communities?
I'm going to have to PM you a link to my Steam Bio to answer your question properly...

I do feel a sort of kinship with the Community, and I think that is vital to such a great online community as this one. There's a big difference between "a community" and "a Community" and in terms of Bungie.net I feel we are "a Community" and that matters.

I used to believe that I could make some really good friends out of people on here, and I have met some awesome friends. But, one thing is for sure, this community has a tendency to be a bit... conceited. There are far too many cynical and condescending users, and it's rather disheartening at times. For the most part though, there are some great people here, and I wish I could have the chance to get to know everyone here just a little better, such as a one on one conversation.

I'm hoping to make it to PAX next year, or maybe something later this year. Perhaps that will give me the chance to meet some other users on here. Only time will tell. :D

I think we've interacted in private groups a few times, and you seem like a pretty cool guy. I would like to get to know you better. :)
