After some problems with this today I was wondering if people should have to join a group to use the forums. I am not in favour of this but was curious as to what others might think. So do you think that we should be able to post in the forums of a group without being a member (of course this would be a setting in for the groups admin to choose to swtch on or off)?

Well it could be beneficial in certain circumstances. If you have a huge event and many people who are new to the site want to join in on that event then it's possible they won't know how tosign up to a group. Therefore they won't be ab;e to sign up unless they find out, which would result in them having to PM or email indivdual people. Having the ability to open the forum so non members can post would solve that problem.

And by the way Greg, your mom is sucky, very sucky.

Sometimes I wish that I could just read the forum in a group before I join to see what it's like and if it's active and stuff. That would be nice, you could make it so you can't post till you're a member.

Maybe have it as an option so groups like HFCS can still be secretive.

There is no need for that. Just open your group to free signups if you want people to post.

If there is a way for people to spam your forums w/out being a member, there is possibility of exploiting this.

You of course realize the potential repercussions of this yes?

So.... After careful consideration I am going to have to jump on the "this idea sucks" bandwagon.

Yes, thats why it would be an option. I am not asking this to be implemented into the site, I am merely asking your opinion.

You should have to be a member of a group to post, but the admin option to allow non-members to see the group forum should be brought back.

And it's your connection that's slower than turtle sex.

In........................................................Out .

Or, we can get groups to put up "Demo" threads to see what the group is like? I mean, they get to see what they talk about, but to avoid spam, can't post in it.

Well you can ask Stosh about the first set up where it was the Underground and Septagon. and to be able to go to the Septagon you had to be a member of Chapter Founders. However Bungie grew and they figured this way is better.

Yeah I asked about that a number of times to Blondbeared. He said they wanted the Private Forums to stay Private. So that was the closeing statement on it.

The best way I could think of is to make another Basic Member Security Roll. and Remove the Post to Forum privlage from members. Then open the group. Sort of like a difrent way of haveing a closed group. Not the same as what we would like but it allows peple to join in and see whats going on then leave.

There is no way they should be able to post in the group if your not in the group. That would make moderating impossible and not effective. That's the whole reason you need to sign up for a group. Otherwise you could just spam or post irrelivent data in groups and not be able to be kicked out.

I do however agree with goweb. There should be a option for none members to look in on the forum but not be able to post. That would allow people to see the forums that they are joining with out allowing them to spam said forums.

i think it should be up to the admin of the chapter to allow whether nonmembers can post in the forums. Obviously, the problem with it is that you can't moderate those users. However, for events such as maimum is talking about, perhaps it would be possible to have the bungie moderators step in. These kinds of events don't generally happen often, so i don't think its that big of a deal, but if people spend all day complaining on how they can't post in the forums in a chapter because they havent' joined it, then maybe they don't deserve to participate in it at all.

Eh, those thoughts were like scrambled eggs.

I'd love to see an option where the admins can allow non-members to view a group forum before joining. There are so many occasions where that would help me.

But an option to allow non-members to post on said forum would be too risky, and very few admins would ever use it. Or they would quickly turn the setting off once non-members started spamming the forums for fun.

View, yes. Post, no.

Option with an on/off feature allowing non-members to view, but not post, the group forums would be nice.

If they could post it would create havok and would need another option for powers which includes stopping the person from viewing or joining the group ever agan.

but I think that the option to let non-members view the forums could be helpful when newer members look at the group.

They can see activity, the members and what there like in posts, how well the forum is organized. It could be good for many groups.
