Subject: With age comes Cynicism

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I'm not cynical, I would even say I've become nicer to other members. Personally, I've matured and found myself working to be a strong member of the community.

I would still say there are a ton of -blam!- older members.

Yes and no in regards to me. Overall, I think it varies greatly between Members. Some have no desire for cynicism while others use it as their fuel for posting. And of course there seems to be a correlation between account age and poor attitude for some, but definitely not all.

I've been cynical for years, even before I came here. My early ban history will provide evidence for this. When there was a lot going on, most people didnt have time to stop and be cynical, because there was almost something for everyone to enjoy. Regardless, my own personal cynical attitude comes and goes, not by time but by each particular instance I'm involved with here. If I find reason to be cynical, I will be, just as much as I would have almost six years ago.

Also, Dragons.

You could say that about newer members too, albeit for different reasons. I don't think it's smart or fair to say that user "quality" inherently decreases with time.

Broad generalizations can sometimes signify an excess amount of ignorance. Of course this is only sometimes, but I think in this case it's safe to say Ken has no clue what he's talking about.

That's what I feel the OP is stating though. That we come here to one-up each other, and that we become cynical, instead of more friendly and kinder to one another.

I can attest to how unfriendly members on here can be, I've gotten close to plenty of nice members, and I get the strong vibe from those that are not so kind.

Perhaps it really is the darkness of Bungie that has gotten to a few users though.

Isn't this whole culture of older members helping newer members kind of a bit of one upping in itself. Kant said (F-YEAH PHILOSOPHY) that the only real good is the good that is done purely for goodness sake, no ulterior motive, whereas i think a lot of the people who do good here are doing good to appear as good members of the community, rather then just being good.

That's what I was talking about when I said I've worked to be a better member of this community. I've done nothing special, I've never said anything of serious value, but I do contribute. I've made plenty of friends, I've had rough conversations over PMs with plenty of other users. And I'm not the only like this, I'm sure.

There two ways to be a strong member: To contribute loudly and to the community as a whole, or to whisper words of encouragement and to become a strong friend with a few.

Even then, you are not limited to only one of those at a time.

Nonetheless, I do believe that there has grown a rift in the community of a few members who are very close, and they have made it difficult for any other user to feel comfortable. Antagonizing to a select few other members, it seems as though there is an unnecessary feud always brewing within each topic posted on this specific forum.

It is rather frustrating, I know. I don't quite understand why some users can't disagree with another without being rude in any capacity.

There should be some sort of agreement that when you post, you understand that people will say things you completely disagree with, but that you will work to be as logical and kind as you possibly can. It really isn't all that hard to disagree in a kind and gently manner.

Yeah but what are the odds that they all just decided to be dicks to one random user. If you go out of your way to get their attention, you can hardly dismiss it as bad luck.

I blame the fact I was active on here and people remember a name after seeing it for a while.

Ironically people complain about people making threads then proceed to complain that the community and various other forums are not very active.

I am going to be honest and say I feel a portion of our community is very rude and unpleasant. I feel bad for any new users coming on the forums and having to deal with these older users who feel entitled because they have been here for 5 years.

Either way, I am not saying everyone is bad but it is apparent from my experience we have some rotten apples in the basket.

Do I think I am cynical, no, I am being rational. Flaming is a big issue on Bungie.net and I just am tired of hearing about it.

So you think it is because you're active?
I was really active in 2009 (I think) and I'm pretty sure there wasn't a witch hunt for me. MyNameIsCharlie makes loads of threads these days and he hasn't received anything like what you did. The fact is that you had it explained to you many times what people had issue with, so you know it isn't just because you posted a lot. Then again it may well be the fact that you've had it explained but you've still not grasped it that may be the problem.

No-one here feels entitled. Mythic Members isn't a group that exists to propagate our demands for special treatment, YANW isn't filled with threads about how we can further our elitist agenda.

Unless you came here with the idea that Bungie.net would be filled with people giddy about the opportunity to talk about Halo, and that there would be rainbows and candy everywhere, the issue really is yours.

Maybe when you've been here a few years longer and lived a few more years you'll understand why older members get a little irate now and then

  • 09.09.2012 11:13 AM PDT

I wouldn't say it's cynicism that I've developed over the years. I'd say it's more of a toleration of the repeating threads, the trolls, and plain stupidity I've seen. I've been coming here too long to let cynicism keep me from visiting this site.

I think you made your experience bad. What you post and the way you come across is what gets you in trouble. Just like the idiot comment that you made earlier. Its like you invite people to dislike you. I don't really see any other member, old or new get as much crap as you get or complain about getting a lot of crap. And again I think you are to blame. If you don't change the way you post or how you come across then your situation is not going to change. Getting a new account is not a bad idea, but you would have to change your post style. Or the ignore feature could be implemented, that way people that dislike you could ignore you and you could ignore people that you dislike.
Posted by: Achronos
Have you considered it from the opposite side?

You in particular seem to have quite a following of people who don't like you, for whatever reason. More than a few harass you whenever you post. If they could ignore you, a number of them probably wouldn't harass you anymore.

The fact of the matter is that "more bans" simply isn't viable. We don't have the manpower to moderate this site as effectively as we want given its population, and even if we did, it is hard to have consistent enforcement with human moderators, as everybody's definitions of "spam" is different. So, this line of thinking is an effort to find a way so we don't need moderators to worry about the little things, and essentially only have them as a SWAT team for shock site spam and the like rather than worrying if someone isn't nice to you.

So far, my opinion is that if it were done, it couldn't be done in isolation, and would have to be very, very, very carefully implemented to avoid creating an "echo chamber" by default... basically to make it so it was a backup device for users, rather than the first thing they hit when annoyed by someone. As to how to do that... well... I guess if it were easy, we would have already done it.

Keep the discussion going, though, it is very helpful.Posted by: spartain ken 15
Well then those people should be banned, maybe a little time out will teach them a lesson. If they keep flamming, they need to be banned some more becuase they didn't learn to play nice

Regardless I still find it rather amusing how childish some of these "elders" act on here when confronted against others users they despise. It is funny because they claim to be these mature forum users by quickly resort to flaming and general whining about things of this nature.

Which raises the point that just because you are here X amount of years does not mean you are more mature or special in any way. In theory you would expect more maturity and kindness but I suppose that is asking too much from some people.

I think people should be more severely punished for harassing other users. Maybe people can learn to keep their mouths shut and stop polluting the forums with this flame-war stupidity. I think something needs to be done if we are to be getting new members, who will not know much about Bungie.net and likely to post a lot of confusing and odd things you may not agree with or think is silly.

I agree with you and I have been trying to post better on the forums and work to be a better community member.

But, the fact still remains we have people in the community who wish to still exhibit rude and arrogant behavior long after it was relevant.

I think some people need to get off their high horse and chill out because it has gotten really old at this point.

But, like you said, there are 2 sides to every story and problems with everything. I feel that people should just not be jerks to people, plain and simple.

There is NO REASON AND NO EXCUSE to act like an asshat to someone else on here. It just wastes my time, your time, and everyone else's time. If people would just keep the aggressive feelings towards others off the forum it would be a much better place. But there are people who do things like make harassing memes of other users that is very disrespectful and downright stupid.

This is definitively an issue as a community we have to each individually address to maintain order. If you think a certain user is annoying, come Destiny, 5 more may come in their place and you have to deal with it.

And herein lies your problem. Your idea for a solution is to insult everyone who has issue with your activities.
As for them being 'mature', I'm not sure there are many members here who would describe their style as mature. We all have different moods. Some of my posts will be proper, fully thought out answers and some others will get me banned. Just because I am capable of both doesn't make me either mature or a troll all of the time.

Which raises the point that just because you are here X amount of years does not mean you are more mature or special in any way. In theory you would expect more maturity and kindness but I suppose that is asking too much from some people.

Your understanding of tolerance is wrong. When you are around things that annoy you for a long time, initially it is easier to put up with it without being too frustrated, but the longer it goes on, the shorter your fuse gets. The forums as a whole are not what you'd call calming.
Take me for example. When I joined in early 05 the parody threads, the trolls, all just part and parcel of a new community I'd joined. Who was I to criticise it. I was a newcomer. Now parody threads annoy me and I feel I can express that because those who are doing them usually joined after me. They joined a community I was a part of and actively made it worse. People who try too hard to be noticed are simply attempting to cut through the normal order and ascend to popularity/fame quicker than they'd normally do. Things seen as disruption to the flow are all things I can comment on because of this.

I think people should be more severely punished for harassing other users.

Are people following you around? Commenting on every post you make, insulting you every time you say something?
No. They are giving you legitimate criticism for a reason.

Maybe people can learn to keep their mouths shut and stop polluting the forums with this flame-war stupidity. I think something needs to be done if we are to be getting new members, who will not know much about Bungie.net and likely to post a lot of confusing and odd things you may not agree with or think is silly.

You are a huge factor in this. You react angrily and anger is more than likely the catalyst to flame wars. I have calm responses in this brief exchange, but if you look at what you've written, it's filled with aggressive phrases.

I am not trying to come off as being rude or a jerk but I feel that is redundant consider what some here think is acceptable forum behavior.

I would argue that your behaviour is often unacceptable, and I think you do try to come off as rude. Why else would you use the words you do (see: calling peoples contributions 'pollution')

You have some good points there.

I suppose we have all gotten a little flustered with nothing to really do on here. But in general I don't tolerate aggressive flaming and I have ignored it in the past. But right now, in this thread atleast, I am trying to voice my opinion.

You can't blame 1 person for the problem, regardless how annoying someone is, they are still accountable for their actions.

But I have been a little too rough and zealous in my responses, I am going to tone it down.

The only difference between flood trolls and Septagon trolls is that Septagon trolls are successful trolls. What you did in the past is well, part of your past. People will always be able to bring things from the past to make fun of you. But if you just learn to ignore them, then that will help with them not bothering you as much. Also if you change people will most likely give no importance to what happened in the past.

I feel that people should just not be jerks to people, plain and simple.

People should be nice to each other but it doesn't mean they will be. It's the same way in real life unfortunately.

There is NO REASON AND NO EXCUSE to act like an asshat to someone else on here.

If they dislike you they have a reason to harass you.

If people would just keep the aggressive feelings towards others off the forum it would be a much better place. But there are people who do things like make harassing memes of other users that is very disrespectful and downright stupid.

Do you keep your aggressive feelings towards others off the forums? Even though this is an internet community it's still a community filled with real people. In real community's you still have the same issues we have here. With the meme thing you are talking about yourself you don't have to hide that. The fact that people make memes and videos about you should tell you that maybe you are doing something wrong. I haven't seen a normal member get made fun off as bad as you. And this goes back to what you post.

This is definitively an issue as a community we have to each individually address to maintain order. If you think a certain user is annoying, come Destiny, 5 more may come in their place and you have to deal with it.

And that's the circle of life.

Anyways I'm really happy to hear that you are trying to change the way you post.

urk: "This is a bad idea."
DeeJ: "Hold still..."

This is how merriam-webster defines what being "cynial" is:1 : captious, peevish

2: having or showing the attitude or temper of a cynic: as

a: contemptuously distrustful of human nature and motives <those cynical men who say that democracy cannot be honest and efficient - F. D. Roosevelt>

b: based on or reflecting a belief that human conduct is motivated primarily by self-interest <a cynical ploy to win votes>
- cyn·i·cal·ly adverb

With that, I'd say I'm not a cynic. I simply hate everyone in these forums with an undying passion, burning with the strength of a thousand suns.

Seriously though, I just get tired of some people whining, or not growing up (Edit: or not mentioning dragons...Dragons). Which in this case, is very rare since behavior like that has high chances of resulting in a ban.
And that, is why I love the mods.

Yeah man, like I said earlier 1 person is usually never at fault. I -blam-ed up a bit here and there.

I still feel though that doesn't give anyone the right to treat another user like a jerk, especially on the mains. There needs to be more common sense.

And, going back to real life, harassing and being jerk can get you into a ton of trouble, maybe even result in serious legal action taken against someone if it is bad enough. Keep that in mind also.
