I agree with these 2 posts. If something bothers you to the point where your day would be ruined by reading it, then just don't go on the forum that day. It really isn't difficult to avoid it. But unfortunately, everybody wants to get their opinion in on the Flood--even when the thread is inappropriate and shouldn't be kept in the spotlight.

Just do what you can and ignore everybody else.

Protip: If an individual has sincere, deep-seated, and profound emotional attachments to the events of a particular date in history (9-11, 7-7, Pearl Harbor, Christmas, the assassination of any figure) to the point where they can reliably predict that the intentionally rude spouting of some jerk on the Internet would offend, hurt, or enrage them, I have a small bit of advice.

Spend that day OFF of the Internet and do something in REAL life that commemorates and shows just how important that day is to you. Plant a tree, attend a memorial service, watch a movie about the event, have a picnic, go pray/be silent/contemplate, be with your family and loved ones. In the end, you'll have a better and far more productive day and no ones text on a screen will have ruined it for you.

And the fact is that you folks in the Flood bring this crap upon yourselves by giving this much attention to trolls every single time they troll. Literally without fail. Hell, the fact that THIS thread exists at all is "troll-feeding." This is truly unbelievable -- the Flood is the most easily trolled forum on the internet, and it's your fault, not the moderators'.

The problem I have with the day is that it is seemed as a more important event than any other tragedy since it.

You don't see loads of threads about 7/7, the Japanese Tsunami, the Christchurch earthquake on their respective days...

Now I get that it's a mostly American forum. But the amount of threads seem essentially spamming and if anything, diminish what they are supposed to represent.

My thoughts.

Trolls go for the easiest and biggest outcry with the smallest effort possible on their part.

So, that particular date (as compared to the others you mentioned) stands the best chance of inflaming the most people with the least amount of effort.

If someone can't follow my protip and remove themselves from the arena, they could at least TRY to follow the wise and correct "report and ignore" advice that has been repeated ad nauseum for nearly a decade.

I r guy who gun to teach u lesson

Its not the jokes, its just the flame-wars that start. Last year was a mess. The best thing you can do is just not enter those threads. Do not feed the flame-bait.

Ignore any threads about "WHY DO U REMMBER THIS IT DUM" (those tend to be the messiest)and don't comment on obvious trolling.

Were it so easy....

Those threads really hit hard with some people. Tasteless threads have no place here, especially with things of that magnitude. Will there be perm bans to hand out?

There would be less need for them (and their known flaws/ineffectiveness) if an inflammatory and clearly intended to incite rage post/thread were simply ignored by people.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

You could almost make an official 911 thread, if it gets too bad.

  • 09.09.2012 1:21 PM PDT

Something that I've recently realized is that on 9-11-2001, I was just barely old enough to understand what was going on at all, and I certainly didn't fully get it. I know most people here are slightly younger than I am, (and they don't follow politics and current events like I do) and they likely don't get what 9-11 truly meant at all. To them, it's just another historical tragedy on a long list of historical tragedies. It's outside their monkeysphere, so to speak.

I've noticed that people tend to be a lot better behaved when the mods are visible. A warning from a mod in the beginning of a thread that is on the edge of what is accpetable seems to get people to think about what they say before they say it, and that leads to people thinking twice about the things they post. Maybe a quick post from a mod saying that they are watching in threads that look like they might get out of hand is all that's needed.

@Vinyl_Hb

I feel like you're being more annoyed by this than you should be. 9/11 was a horrible day in history, and there will always be people with their own opinions and things to say about it whether or not its good or bad.

All those threads exist for is to incite negative responses. Not once have I seen a thread that hasn't gone off the rails.

I'm either a fool or an inteligent man, depending on how sleepy or angry I am.

I originaly made an account on 07.27.2007 but I wanted to link my GT and made this account. Don't forget your passwords!

Meh. I simply don't enter those threads and ignore the people prodding me with it.

I hope it doesn't last for more than a week.

...and by "this" I mean all the horrible 9/11 threads that were made on the Flood last year.

Threads with hundreds posts of nothing but sick humored-jokes and images about 9/11 were thriving on 9/11/2011. The mods did lock a few threads, but threads that stood as a "main" discussion hub stayed alive, and the horrible posters were never punished for what they did. The mods basically did nothing. It got to the point where flamewars were being started over the issue of, get this... being able to make fun of it.

I know some of the mods will say that they did, in fact, ban people that day, but I know for a fact that the sick-humored posts within the threads were never taken care of.

For discussion value, what's your opinion on this issue? Not 6EPR, but the issue of posters making fun of such a tragedy on the Bungie.net forums.

Not that I liked it, but it is technically free speech. Sure it's insulting free speech but it is nonetheless. Regardless, don't pay attention to it. As you should hopefully know, feeding the attention of the trolls also fuels their ego and desire to anger more people like you.

Edit: I guess Recon already summed it up.

I get what you're saying here. To be honest, I know Pearl Harbor was a terrible, terrible tragedy, but if I'm being completely real, it's just a point in time to me. It's a thing that happened in a textbook that I have to remember the date of. The same will happen to anyone born ~1998 onward. But at the same time, that doesn't mean that WWII vets for years still didn't have a rush of fury every time they saw a Mitsubishi car or that people who lived in New York won't be the most afraid of people wearing Turbins in Airports

Either way, they're incredibly touchy subjects and you have to reflect on it the way you wish to while also keeping in mind the points of view of the others who it matters to/affected more/greater than yourself. And that's what this is about. Being sensitive to other people even if you don't necessarily understand their point of view.

If you think such a statement is true, why was this thread locked?

Yes, I did make that thread. So? It's not making fun of a national tragedy where innocent people died.

Your statement is ludicrous.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

They aren't required to moderate and do have their own jobs to do, just remember that.
Let's just hope this year they don't all have overtime to work and can stop any trolling that goes on tomorrow.

Gosh, is it that hard to take a break from the Flood for a few days?
Seriously, or just the forums in general.
This is the type of attitude someone that jokes about it themselves would have.
lolnoWhat I'm addressing is why the mods let it slide.I'm sure it's on purpose... just to spite you.

If I don't like what's posted on the mains or groups for that matter... I just log off. If by taking a break from Bungie because I don't like the "topic of the day" makes me just as bad as people who joke about tragic events, you are misguided.
