Halo 3

Below is an essay I wrote for a rhetorical composition class in college during my freshman year in college, dated 9/26/11. I know Halo 3 was released on the 25th. I was completing the essay the night before the due date (9/26/11). I was to define something, anything, holding my own opinion. This is what I wrote. By the way, I literally copied word for word from Microsoft Word. I knew I couldn't just copy and paste, so I took the time to retype everything. There my be typos because I tried to do it quickly. Yes, I didn't feel like going to bed and I was bored. Give me your opinion on it. A grade, perhaps. hahahaha

Three. Two. One. Spawn. Run up to the front platform next to the Needler. Swap the Battle Rifle for the Assault Rifle. Look to the right and take the left to run through the rocket hallway and swap the pistol with the rockets. Watch out for nearby enemies approaching. On your left there's a Master Chief guarding the bridge to his side of the map. Four, three-burst Battle Rifle shots and he's dead before he gets to land a shot. That opponent's teammates are on to you. Go back via the camouflage room located between the bridge and rocket hall and wait for your radar to show the next opponent approach you. Throw a grenade as he walks in, then finish him off with another trigger of the battle Rifle--double kill. Having used the radar, quickly turn around, switch your rockets as you are crunched for time, and blast the floor nearby that sneaking enemy --triple kill. Swap your remaining rockets with the sniper that belonged to that Chief and walk out the corridor the same way you entered it to take a look at the enemy sniper tower. Scope in once with the sniper and headshot the Chief--overkill, extermination

This isn't the ring you'd find on someone's finger and this isn't the ring on an angel; this is the forerunner structure that has the ability to obliterate the universe. What's the mission? Destroy these rings. The story of the future that devotes on cyborg--a genetically enhanced superhero named John 117, or the Master Chief--to a mission aimed at destroying these structures made primarily to wipe out "The Flood" and the covenant race that believe the activation of these destructive rings is the only way to salvation. It's a lot to take in, but this well thought out, original and unique story, coupled with a groundbreaking and innovative multiplayer experience defines a whole new level of video game entertainment. This is what we call Halo 3.

In Halo 3 the campaign continues on with its story: the first Halo is all about discovery; a wide array of new environments, objectives, and characters create a campaign filled with action and adventure, which is all sequentially incorporated with each title. By the end of Halo, the first ring is destroyed. But to the player's unsuspecting eye, in Halo 2, Master Chief's artificial intelligence sidekick, Cortana, finds out that there are seven total rings to help annihilate "The Flood," which is a parasitic invasive mutative species bent on killing all living beings. And now, in the epic finale called Halo 3, the Master Chief continues his mission to destroy the covenant, the rings, and the flood in a full-blown effort to save humanity. Contrary to the previous titles, you will find that the level design is much more linear. Think of it like this: with each title, the Chief advances in his mission homing in on the core missions that are left to complete his journey. There's less to discover, and there's less to learn as you complete the main objectives, leaving room for the most intense drama in the series. You can have fun with what the brilliant final campaign has to offer going in with friends or meeting co-op four-player mode with people from across the world and wipe out the covenant with a rich assortment of Halo-specialized weaponry. Want to reap more benefits from your enjoyment of the campaign (and multiplayer)? Rerun the mission you and your friends played in theater mode, one of the many modes of play in Halo 3 including custom games and forge, and capture the moments of hilarity.

As 21st century games continue to develop and evolve, we gamers have realized that the part of a FPS that has longevity to it is the multiplayer experience. Halo 3 is a video game that encompasses skill like any other shooter but attracts video gamers on all levels. Halo 3 is the casual game. Halo 3 is the competitive game. Halo 3 can be defined as the definitive multipalyer experience: it's fun, it's addictive, and it's challenging. What is it not? It's not the run-and-gun shooter that has you walking into the action only to find that you've either been shot once or twice from some random camper or that you've spotted an oblivious player and killed him in a couple quick shots. These kinds of FPS games have no depth to them, and that's what you could define, for instance, the Call of Duty series as: a run-and-gun shooter. Halo 3 is not a game that requires adaption. A new player can pick up Halo 3 and draw so much fun from it even if they get killed left and right for most of their matches. This is because in Halo 3, you live. On average, one survives more than a few shots taken to the head or body and has the time to plan strategy and have enough time to pick oneself up and recover from injury. The important thing to note is that the kill-times aren't too slow either; the time it takes to kill an opponent in Halo 3's multiplayer is perfect. Every kill you get in a match of Halo 3 online multiplayer is so fulfilling. It took effort; you had to keep your aim steady and target your opponent consistently for an average of four consecutive shots, depending on your weapon.

I''ve been defining Halo 3's gameplay and multiplayer experience as "perfect" a lot (or other variations of compliments), and here's why: the kill times are perfect, the map layouts are perfect, and the hit boxes (the surface area that damage on a player model registers) are laid out perfectly which helps player interaction run smoothly. Put that all together and Halo's online experience flows impeccably. There's so much interaction with the maps themselves; utilizing advantage points on maps for weapon-specific targeting or taking cover behind useful barriers but at the same time forcing you to rework your approach to the target enemy. The reason for this is because every weapon has a specific use and each weapon has different qualities. The Battle Rifle: the mid-ranged weapon used for the average interaction. If you find a Battle Rifle on the map somewhere, chances are you pick it up. The rockets: used for close to mid-ranged skirmishes giving you an easy victory. The shotgun: used for close-range combat. The needler: used for close ranged combat or narrow pathways. The list continues. Each weapon is intricately developed to follow balanced play. The rocket Launcher has low ammunition as well as a rather slow projectile speed (having slow projectile speed is what really helps define and balance this weapon because in a game like Call of Duty, the rocket launcher is just an all-around overpowered weapon, having very fast projectile speed and strong fire power) but carries intense fire power and area of effect. But rather than sum up the distinct qualities of every weapon in the game, it would be safe to say that each weapon has an equal amount of strengths and weaknesses. That's the glory that helps to define Halo. Every match you play can have varying results and the methods of interaction with other players depend on each weapon that you use because every weapon is so different from their respective counterparts.

The introductory was an instance of excellent play in the map "The Pit" featured in Halo 3. That one Spartan took the whole team on his own, manipulating map elements and weapon diversity for his advantage; to the opponents' failure in utilizing the game mechanics properly, the four of them were single-handedly taken out by one experienced player. In all fairness, the satisfaction of getting even one kill drives up one's motivation to continue playing and do better. Then when you hear the narrator exclaiming "Double Kill!" and then "Triple Kill!" or "Killing Spree!" you get a sense of accomplishment and excitement during each match. The brilliance of Halo 3 can be defined as the solid play one encounters in the multiplayer and, of course, the campaign aspects of Halo. Halo 3 is a game with virtually no imperfections which supplements endless fun for everyone to enjoy and even after exactly four years and a day of this game's release, it's hard to point out other games that can compare to Halo 3's excellence.

HUGE P.S

It's supposed to say to swap the assault rifle for the Battle Rifle in the opener, not the other way around.

Since I bet most of you who read this are curious as to what mark/grade I received, i'll simply tell you :p

I got a B+, or equivalent of an 8.7-8.99/10
The greatest part about this class was the freedom to choose topics. It was still hard as hell to compose, though. I think I spent around 3 days brainstorming/writing this.

"What are we holding on to, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for."

That was actually pretty entertaining, but I immediately noticed the mistake with "Swap the Battle Rifle for the Assualt Rifle". Almost stopped reading there.
