here's some constructive criticism.

your ideas for campaign mostly sucked because it jumped around far too much and there were like what? a grand total of 3 levels on earth or something? MC seemed like a very minor character in the story, and it was slightly anticlimactic how you described some of the key points.

Yeah, I noticed that..maybe I should try to tighten up the campaign tomorrow, and update it..there were lots more than 3 missions on Earth though..
also, the time travel didn't make sense because he took the index with him right? then how could the index be there when he arrived during the events of halo 1? it would have been missing.
It's actually not time travel, it warps the time, slowing it down and sometimes reversing it for certain people (MC, Johnson, Cortana) So actually a "time loop" would be created from this..read a theory on it here, and we experienced the "regular universe" before the warp occured in Halo CE..and in halo 2, it's the first time "loop" so nothing is really effecting eachother..

Kinda hard to wrap your mind around it..=(
your weapon and vehicle ideas are somewhat lacking and in general this was quite fun reading but i disagree with several suggestions.
What do you think was lacking from it? It sure was fun thinking of them..but typing them was a whole other deal..lol.

To start, I'm pleased that the discussion thusfar has been fairly polite and intelligent. Now to add some constructive criticism:

From a balance perspective, your ideas consistently seem to be well rationalized (even if I'm inclined to disagree with some of them, specifically the weapons you mentioned that don't exist as of yet), but in the cases where you suggested that a weapon no longer be dual-wieldable in the name of balance, I immediately had to disagree. The reason is simple: I think it would be possible to 'repair' any imbalances in these weapons without compromising the logic by which they operate now; specifically, it doesn't really make sense for it to no longer be possible to dual wield a brute plasma rifle or a pistol, because they are small weapons that can be operated with a single hand. There must be a way to change them (if indeed it is necessary to change them at all) that allows them to still make sense as functional objects in the halo universe.

As to your story ideas, I simply disagree with your notions about how the story will (or rather should) play out; more importantly, from a conceptual standpoint, the story is already written. The developers already know basically what's going to happen in the game, so that kind of speculation just seems less relevant in general to me.

In any case, good work putting together some well thought out and rationalized ideas (even if I wasn't really on board with many of them).

ok some problems with your weapons is that you said to make the ma5b weaer, which it definitely doesn't need, considering that it wasnt very useeful in the first place. if anything they need to make it stronger.

the needler shotgun, while funny, sounds sort of gimmicky and unnecessary. a 5 headhsot kill with the br if no other changes such as rof were made (other than range) would make it underpowered.

the no AA capability of the rockets is slightly worrying because as of right now only vehicles, hijacking, and rockets are balancing the banshees. in halo pc everyone whores them because there isnt much you could do. hell in halo pc people just run you over because there's no hijacking.

there are some others but i'm going to go to bed. I'll post more in the morning.

i like some other ideas though, like the handheld gauss, although it seems a bit unbalanced.

also, adding some minor characters to tthe beginning of a ggame just to "flesh out" the story can actually hurt the game because in the end it only divides up the campaign and draws focus away from where ti should be. i liked the description of the ending though, heh.

Maybe you are right... More spartans would be cool... But MASTER CHIEF have been the best human warrior all the time... It would be strange if somebody from earth was maybe better than him...If the other spartan will be in HALO 3 then should JOHN-117 still be the leader and the BEST...

Maybe I went a little overboard with the Brute Plasma Rifle, but the Magnum would have an excuse..

Actually, it was the MAGNUM that isn't dual wieldable anymore..a manum is generally stronger than a pistol..I basically said the size of the slugs should be increased in the magnum.

The increased slug size would increase the amt. of recoil, making it a two handed weapon..also decreasing the clip size..and making it much more powerful than the magnum we have now.

Actually, if we have the BR, and Carbine..the AR will make the 3rd rifle..and an Assault Rifle has longer range than Dual SMGs.

It's actually a really fun weapon to use, and it looks amazing..

Actually, I said the only thing a rocket could lock onto would be the 'Shee (which has lost it's boost, but regained it's "Banshee Bomb"

And with the rocket's power "upped" slightly along with the speed, it would remain quite effective against vehicles (like it was in Halo) but still be just as effective agains infantry troops as it was in Halo 2 (longer reload time, slower melee, longer time to wait in between shots)

Actually there's 9 that can be alive..wierd, eh? It's also wierd that Bungie had to cut off about two missions at the end of Halo 2 when MC reaches Earth due to time constraints ;)

I was actually just listing some things I thought would be a good idea, I'm not going to send them into bungie or anything. I also wanted to see what people had tothink of my ideas..the majority would like them (though the campaign seems dumb at times)

..Some of the things could make it into the final game (Flamethrower, FRG, Helicopter, Pelican, Flood Combat Form Elite in multiplayer)


.....Just because someone thinks of an idea, Bungie won't use it?..If that was the case, I would not buy Halo 3, because plenty of great ideas have showed up here from fans.

I didn't like campaign and having more spartans. But your weapon vehicle ideas were GREAT but the problem is not every halo 2 weapon will be in halo 3. And your map ideas could use a little bit of improvement. But map maker is awesome.

The single player as bad but you know that so we can move on quickly. I like 99% of your weapon ideas. However some things which I don't like include the needler shotgun. There is already a shotgun and making another would be a complete waste of time. I'm not too crazy about the recharging jackal sheilds especially if its going to take the place of one of my weapons. There are oversheilds in some maps so I think that would be good enough without having a rechargable sheild. Now that you say that artillary strikes won't kill everyone in the base, I like it. I don't like the Ground to Air missiles because thats pretty much saying the rocket launcher that can only hit dropships. The fists idea I really don't like because all its doing is making a melee attack that you can do with your gun faster, which isn't needed. The only other thing concerning weapons is the railgun, but it doesn't bother me too much. The last thing is commanding AIs with the Dpad. I don't like that feature because to me it doesn't fit halo.

Actually..a needler shotgun is great, and could just be used on Covenant maps (Like Midship), to add more immersion (and it kicks way more ass than a human shotty)

The Jackal energy shields need to take the place of a weapon because it recharges (and when it takes too much damage, it "pops" and doesn't work until it recharges to 100%

The GTAMs are actually a good idea, because a regular rocket wouldn't take out a huge dropship..so having one at each base (and it can only shoot once locked onto a dropship) would actually make the huge maps with dropships fair so there's no spawn camping going on.

Why wouldn't fists be a good idea? You probably wouldn't think of using the feature, but having it available for filming (think Mike Tyson fighting people and biting their ears off as a Flood form) would be awesome..


Telling your Marines not to be idiot's and fire their weapons all the time would be great (assuming that they don't get a major boost in AI..Halo 2's werent really smarter than Halo CE's)

From your perspective, these balance ideas may look ideal, but you have to take into account that the engine will be different from Halo 2; it won't play the same, therefore merely taking the weapons and systems from the prior game and fixing them up won't remedy the flaws.

I think I head somewhere along the lines of Halo 3's engine being basically Halo 2,s with some major upgrades..Havok is a 360 engine (Gears of War is using it too), which is why it was so glitchy when Halo 2 came out utilizing the system..

Also, the engine doesn't have anything to do with the weapons strength..neither do vehicle specs, but tweaks can be made to adjust the vehicle physics to make them tighter, or looser, than previous games.
