Hahaha...cause Bungie does an amazing job of finding out who these members are right?

When I contribute to the forums, the feedback to my contribution is reward enough in and of itself.

But that's just me.

Awww you. We do enjoy your posts.

I believe that if you are a 'better' B.net forum member, you are already recognized.
How?

How do we distinguish between members who are/would be good role models for this community, and how do we convey this to newer members?

By the means in which they post. I don't need a flashing light or fake forum medals tell me that what (insert member name here) posts is normally worthwhile, helpful, and informative reading. I know that from experience.
Newer members do not need an alert system either. You learn from being active. You learn just as quickly, actually faster who is not worth reading.

If I am not posting, then I am reading what you might have posted.

I would like to see role models being recognized and more noticed for what they do. It would show people that they have done something to contribute to the community, than others will learn from them and want to continue whatever it is that they did.

New members, especially those who visit here to post a quick question, do not want to waste time doing that.

Take a look at the link Cryptic posted. One of the Icons that can be awarded is "Networking Guru". If you remember back to when one of the game forums were super active, you'll also remember the large number of posts/topics that were made about connectivity issues (NAT, dropped connections, etc...).

It would have been helpful to those members who joined just to post about a connectivity problem if they had an indication that the information they were receiving was from someone who [insert whoever hands out a "badge"] considered to be a source of good information.

This. People who do good stuff would deserve them.

ooga booga boooh

I thought "better" members got offers to become ninjas? I don't know, it might be nice to reward the more proper members of the site maybe with their own custom avatar, or maybe even title.

They're not huge, difficult things to do, but a small reward for many years of good posting and citizenship here on B.net might be nice.

I don't see anything wrong with recognizing "better" members as long as it doesn't discriminate against people. I can already see this becoming some sort of spam fest so people can claim a prize. It would be like a contest that would bring out the worst in people. I haven't really been as active on these forums in the past couple years (life got in the way), but I remember a lot of people being arrogant because they were members here longer than other people. I can see that same type of attitude in people who are being rewarded. Will they really respond to getting recognized as them being role models, or will they rub it in everyone else's face? I think it's a great idea, I just want you to consider the potential negatives it could cause.

Does anyone even read these?

I think member titles are supposed to do that. It doesn't do a very good job at that though.

I think member tiles only show off activity and longevity of service.

Yeah but it's all we have to distinguish between different members. Mythics are the wise and old elitist bunch of people while everyone else sucks.

  • 09.12.2012 7:37 AM PDT

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

I think that this kind of thing could be a good idea. It would be a way to help new members find helpful older members who could help show them the ropes, and it gives helpful people some recognition for their work.

I mean, shouldn't you just do thing because it makes others happy, and not for the recognition? But if so, then I don't see how you could do this other than some sort of write up about the person, which we already do sometimes.

Better members are known. Most of us know who makes good posts by their name/avatar.

How about a little medals on the right side of your titlebar? If you hover over them, a little window pops up next to your cursor. Their is some open space on that side, and it wouldn't get in the way of the color or title on the bar.

I don't think that's true. I just think Mythics have been around a lot longer than most members and they're recognized for that. That doesn't mean everyone else sucks. We're all in this community together and segregating members by title is what tears it apart. Like I stated in my original comment in this thread, that old elitist attitude use to be a huge thing a few years back. I've been gone for a while so maybe it still is, but the fact of the matter is that a silly colored title representing the longevity of one's presence in a community doesn't make them better, wiser, or old. Sheesh, I'm only 27.

Butter my ass, turn around, spread open my butt cheeks, and say "Right here mutha-blam!-a!!"

Join Planetary Annihilation and Speed Haven

Instead of this how about a post count meter or a contribution scale. Not with numbers but with rankings

say for 3000 posts it will have an emblem added to the titlebar
for 5000 posts another emblem
for 7777 posts, another emblem
for 10,000 posts, another emblem
for 20,000 posts another
and so on is decent intervals

Custom titles is what I also thought about, too. It just makes sense.

"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick -Potatoes!-... and I'm all out of bubblegum."

Check out this Thread on how to help new members here on Bungie.net

yeah this could work somehow I think. It would be nice for newer members like you said who are asking question that they are getting good advice.

And even if you didn't have a badge or anything and you still gave people good advise the moderators or Even DeeJ would see this and after awhile would give you the same badge to show that you give helpful advise If someone needs help.

I agree after a long period of time on here you can tell people by there post. But for newer members they really have no idea or know anyone on here so it would be nice to help them out.

Considering the bad members greatly outnumber the good ones, the results wouldn't reflect the actual truth.

  • 09.12.2012 8:30 AM PDT

This wouldn't really be a bad thing to do. Give something to those who have given to the community. I guess "better" in that context would mean those who contribute to, and for the sake of the community. Those who make Bnet that much more interesting with scripts, or game nights. A title bar, or custom avatar wouldn't be a stretch. I think they definitely done something to deserve it.

This world wants to drag you down... And the weight, that guilt they want to hang around your neck, you don’t have to carry it one more step. You think they won’t let you rest, but it’s not up to them. It never was.

Maybe you could put a little star next to their name title? And when you hover your mouse over it the yellow-description-box would appear describing their feat?

Edit: I know a lot of people dislike Waypoint, but they have a similar system, but they award medals which appear below the user's avatar. Awards include "Host with the Most", "E3 Top Contributor" etc.

It would have to be awarded by mods, rather than an automated system though. It would be the "Recon" of B.net, but way less cool.
I don't much like medal systems if I'm honest.
Fair enough. Would you care to say what you don't like about it?

I know if I were to use a similar system, I would have the awards be more subtle, and awarded only for practical contributions to the forum; like Duardo said, something that tells a user "this guy can help me with networking issues", for example.

  • 09.12.2012 8:32 AM PDT

Each member could have a star count on their title bar, whenever a mod or employee saw them do something extraordinary, they could reward them with a star point.
