No, forums are about discussion, not a competition to get "recognition".

Agreed.

Agreed.
While agreeable, you must look at the fact that people who do the right thing don't do it for recognition. They do it for a sense of self-righteousness that fulfills them

And, hey, even if they are doing the right thing in order to get recognition, as long as they keep it up, they are still doing the right thing, regardless of their intentions.

Key

Shortest daza OP ever. Congrats.

OT: Sure, why not. As long as regular members don't cry like they normally do about elitism.

I understand your point but people who do the right thing already get somewhat rewarded/recognized when their topics get pinned or show up under the Top Forum Topics. Isn't that fulfilling enough?

The Risk Is Worth The Reward.

But isn't that what the title system is for OP?

Yes, somewhat. What dazarobbo is talking about here is full recognition for their efforts. He seems to be talking about the under the radar stuff, not just the stuff that people save enough to be a Top Forum Topic or the pinned topic (which usually come form Ninjas or Employees anyway).

Daza wants there to be a way for the everyday user who contributes effectively and semi-professionally in their own way to be recognized and taken a little bit more seriously than just a regular, ineffective post. Nothing about elitism, or fame, or recognition, just giving the knowledge to others that "insert user here" can be taken as an authority when it comes to "insert topic here" so pay attention.

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

Meh, who cares? If I ever did something meaningful or useful for the community (I doubt that would ever happen) I don't think I could ever care if I was recognized or not.

But I suppose it would promote some incentives for a certain number of users.

Not necessarily Templar. It is entirely possible that a Mythic Member is not capable of contributing in some sort of way that, say, a Heroic Member can. There are many instances where the title system has no significance whatsoever in terms of member contribution quality/quantity.

I believe that if you are a 'better' B.net forum member, you are already recognized.
How?

How do we distinguish between members who are/would be good role models for this community, and how do we convey this to newer members?

Most of the time I assume that people with Mythic or Legendary already are pretty good role models. I mean, most of them have to get there without being banned.
Lol.

The title system "rewards" posting within the rules and doing so frequently. Within the rules doesn't really count, considering activity in private groups counts towards it as well.

At the moment, yes. But I think that would change if there was a reward system.

I agree with that, but it I think that some people would just try too much and we would end up with a pile of threads that are just people wanting recognition.

Or am I just being too pessimistic here? Maybe..

By "better" I refer to members (or groups of members) who make contributions to the community. For instance, by the way they post, sharing their artwork, stories, organising game nights, etc...

Why not have a way of identifying the role models in this community?
Remember that thing called 'Community Joes'?

Yea that is very true, I wasn't thinking along those lines.

Other forums that I go to that have this look bad to me. I also think some people would try to hard to get medals, resulting the forums being filled with clutter.

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

Each member could have a star count on their title bar, whenever a mod or employee saw them do something extraordinary, they could reward them with a star point.
This is a really good idea. I don't agree with "star points" next to your title bar, rather a certain amount of stars would unlock titles, avatars or avatar flair, etc.

Personally, I think crowning more active members as "better" would just be divisive and counter-productive in holding us together as a community.

Participating more and posting more thoughtful posts has it's own rewards already.

+1 for you good sir.

I wouldn't really care, I think people knowing your name and recognizing you is more than enough.

I think that may just be a little but too pessimistic there. Someone else made a point similar to that so I thought I might as well address it.

When you think about it, the line between someone who is trying and someone who is succeeding is very evident on the internet. The successful people see results and the people who try too hard end up in the dumps and are sadly brushed aside. While it is sort of a harsh reality, it's one of those truths on the internet that you "just know."

The people who are deserving of their recognition aren't the ones going out and searching for it. They do what they do, and they enjoy doing it, and in turn there is a reciprocation of that positive energy turned back toward them. For now, it's just the knowledge you store from being around in a Community/Forum with said person(s). In the future, like daza wants, there could be a more prominent way to recognize said person(s).

Huh, I guess you're right. I didn't probably think this through before posting, as always. (maybe the reason I wouldn't be one of those getting them rewards haha)

Hello! I'm Bunie.net's resident medical student (hell i'm sure there are more but I'm the only one who openly declares it!) I love my emblem, and I am periodically active.
I have a Twitter

On one hand I want to scream "YES, put a start next to their name", but on the other hand, I want to say "no one should really be raised above the general community"...

  • 09.12.2012 1:55 PM PDT

@Helveck

Just an Average Joe...

I gave you people Dragons.

Where is my reward?

But seriously I think community thanks and recognition should be enough.

  • 09.12.2012 1:59 PM PDT

Heck I just thought of a great idea. In the United Kingdom we 'Knight' our distinguished members of the public.

Bungie could do something on those lines. For example adding Sir infront of the Username. However, 'Sir' is british, and Bungie is american so, give it some bungie magic.. and Tah-Da!

This way you don't get any more rights than other users, you still have your same title's and bar colours, you just have an extra 'end prefix'.

Thoughts?

  • 09.12.2012 2:09 PM PDT

Two makes there more than speakers.

I'm unsure about the idea of this.
It could encourage better behavior around the site, but it could also cause Elitism or anything of the sort. I guess I'm pretty consent with where we are at in terms of being recognized.

But I'd rather have known someone from experience rather than a shiny title.

Maybe a weekly member interview or something like that (IDK).

I don't know how you'd go about identifying them. Custom title perhaps but I honestly think that contributing members are recognized naturally.
This.
