Isn't community service a reward in itself?

Honestly, what do you have in mind? Did they not have community spotlights at one time? Did they not show off user created content within their game itself? Do they not have a title system that shows off adherence to community values? (somewhat...)

Were you proposing a monetary reward of some sort, or an item that they can show off in real life?

You're asking if people on this site are happy with just contributing?

The site of the development team that made 'Recon'?

And people change. What if just getting this mark make that user act like an ass to people because they feel superior?
Then they get their icon(s) taken away. Also, if you were to get banned, you would automatically lose the icons.

Too far?

If we disagree, it's nothing personal, opinions are opinions.
Antagonizing me to build a false sense of worth is so damn cute.

Brighten your day with science.

If they contribute a lot, they should get some sort of award.

More of an incentive to help, too.

I honestly think that contributing members are recognized naturally.

Honestly, I just don't get the point of rewarding someone for wanting to make everyone else happy. Every time I set up a Flood Game Night, I did it because it would be fun, not to be recognized. Hardly a user knows me, and I truly believe that anyone that contributes enough to be recognized will have gotten all they really deserved out of the final product.

E.shoe has point. Bettering the community should be your "reward", if it isn't, then I would question your intentions. I remember the guy who got his group theme accepted demanding his "Theme master" title. After that post I just didn't think of him as highly, it kinda tarnished the contribution he had made.

Some people have less than noble intentions.

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

"Achievement" Badges for users.

All my lol.

Bungie boy scouts, site achievements, gold stars.. come on. If that is motivation, you need to get off.

Custom titles are the only ones I support, and they should be earned through doing something that is community related.
Apparently you don't get the point of being recognized. It's not for the bragging rights or collecting badges, it's for showing others that you can be trusted and/or are knowledgeable about a topic.

By "better" I refer to members (or groups of members) who make contributions to the community. For instance, by the way they post, sharing their artwork, stories, organising game nights, etc...

Why not have a way of identifying the role models in this community?
If a person contributes a great amount to the community, then the majority of the community usually takes notice and the user becomes recognizable as a result. Sure, some of the "fame" may be in part due to the user's personality, but that's more of an extra factor that just makes that specific user stand out a little bit more.

I think that most of the "better members" are already quite recognizable. We already have a way of identifying them; they're memorable.

Should they be rewarded for their efforts with arbitrary title-bars, custom avatars, or any other cosmetic item of personalization? Well, the way I see it, offering a reward for community contributions will only serve to influence more of the community to become more contributing themselves. So yes.

But beware: Inevitably, a Community Members group will be created, and after that, a Community Mythic Members group. The cloud of sarcastic elitism will soon grow large enough to block out the blue sun. The Community Members will live upon that cloud, stealing the sunlight from the Members of the lower castes. A war will erupt. A battle will take place. Many will die. Many will respawn. There will be betrayal. There will be lust.

Nah, there will probably just be complete apathy after a week or so. But still, may as well give it a shot.

@Geegs30

I like the idea of Bungie rewarding or at least acknowledging certain members of the community. We've seen it before with certain giveaways, and also with the Community Joe interviews. I guess I wouldn't mind seeing badges or something else as a little flair on people's profile.

What is 'better'?
Someone who has proven themselves to be valuable to the community. Whether that's by helping users or contributing in a number of ways like Daza suggested in the OP. They're in no way above another user, and I think the word 'better' isn't the right word to describe said users. But valuable, yes.

I kinda of think as the "Average Joe" articles in this light.

Wouldnt mind something next to your name if you have been featured in that aspect.
That actually reminded me of how HaloCharts had profiles set up. Those of you who saw them will know what I mean.

No, forums are about discussion, not a competition to get "recognition".
The forums are one part of the community; this is a network of gamers with common interests. This wouldn't be a competition, either.

Posted by: HeyBlade789
On one hand I want to scream "YES, put a start next to their name", but on the other hand, I want to say "no one should really be raised above the general community"...
What's wrong with that? They deserve it IMO.

Custom Titles is all I can think of at the moment.
This or custom avatars.
Disagreed on custom avatars, and unless the title indicated "this member has been deemed a good role model for this community" in some way, no as well.

It shouldn't be so much of a privilege, but just more of a badge or ribbon - a label - in recognition of what a member has done here that they can "wear" on their profile.

Nor should you do it specifically for the recognition, but if there were a way to indicate to everyone that you've been doing this, then maybe more people would know you.

Gamers Anon

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

If Ninjas can ban people it would make sense if they can reward them too. So if they notice a member that is being helpful or a good role model they give them a point towards leveling up. However if they are banned they lose all progress.

Who or what would determine who is "better" though, and how would you go about keeping it from simply becoming a popularity contest or blatant favoritism?
Probably some kind of internal nomination/vote between the Community guys, Webteam, Ninjas, etc...

What I'm imagining is a way to label a member's profile with something like a badge which others can view. These "badges" could have details of why a specific user has been recognised as an outstanding member. Other members will look to these people as potential role-models.

The Icons section in the link Cryptic posted is basically what I'm talking about.

Works if you've been here a while, but not so much if you're a new member asking a quick question.
