Cortana 5 is a carbon-based lifeform that frequently visits these forums, currently residing in the United States. Practically every male on the site responds to her posts.
The Joyeuse IP Formula
Making something optional doesn't justify it.
Let's look at it this way:
A long time ago, in a Bungie.net version far, far away, we had !visible signatures. With links! And colored text! Quite often, people's signatures would be longer than their posts.
So, the ability to change your text color was axed. Some of that is credit to the dwindling maturity of many forum goers during the Halo 2 rush. But that's just a theory.
Then the signatures would only be visible when you'd hover over someone's avatar. Which was kinda cool, IMHO. So, why were signatures gradually hidden more and more? Because, from what I can tell, the webteam likes this place nice and tidy. Signatures took up a lot of real estate here. It helped make things more uniform.
On a more colorful note, titles have always been candidates for getting the axe, too. My pretty blue bar might not be with us for the next big update.
So, if we're aiming for uniformity, for the sake of moving the focus on what's said by users, and not how much attention their myspace-style customizations can get, why would this be even a good idea?
What you really want is official support for a coup-style system. And guess what? Coup works just as well! Which is why I make pretty customizations and then turn it off.
Because it's optional. And you have the option to use that app. You don't have the option for an official system because, while it's not really my place to say this, making it and sustaining it with webteam time and resources seems quite silly.

Coup, as much as I love it, is the myspace of Bungie.net. You're giving a bunch of people who don't know how to color coordinate the ability to make the entirety of their posts into anything they please.
Let's just keep it running as a user generated app. That way, official time and resources aren't being dumped into trying to moderate people's crappy customizations?
I don't see a reason to be upset over an option.
You can always, you know, block.
