Subject: What is Bungie going to do about Lag in H3???

So, is it just me that noticed the increase in lag after the first few updates of Halo 2? Nice job on fixing a broken/shipped game, Bungie, but how will these security, hack, and mod issues be resolved BEFORE the release in Halo 3? I love Halo... but I've never seen lag like this in my life-- understandable 1-2 games in an hour, but 85% of the games I play end up with someone lagging around (Veriz. FIOS internet with 15MB down and 2.5 up-- its not a connection issue).

I'm just curious, and if I don't see anything that really addresses it, than I can't help but feel like Bungie is more concerned about making a $$ than provided quality stuff. I don't know that Halo 3 would be worth it.

What do you guys think?

its that so many people bridge now. they get the host and then the game lags. unless bungie makes dedicated servers then it will always lag sometimes.

It's not Bungie's fault there's lag. Your stupidity has amazed me. Just leave.

I agree for the most part, but not every game has a 'bridger' and there are other xbox live games that don't witness the same amount of lag.

I think dedicated servers would be delicious... but what... then we'd pay a subscription fee for Halo 3-- like many of the MMORPGs right now. I don't want to pay $400 for a 360, $60 for Halo 3, and then $15 a month so I can play video games. C'mon, they aren't that important in life. (maybe they are for some of you)

  • 06.23.2006 2:42 PM PDT

Umm... It is partially Bungie's fault that there is lag. You must not play any other online games. The bandwidth required is there, the problem is that the game itself does not handle data efficiently... am I supposed to think that's Microsoft's fault? or the internet provider?

Anyone on high-speed these days has at least 3Mb download... and yet you're convinced that the lag has something to do with internet speed?

Oh, and your website sucks... fyi

Lag is not a problem with the game, moron,it is a problem with internet connection speed. I hate people who come here flaming Bungie for shipping a "broken" game when the problem isn't even Bungie's fault.

The best Bungie can do is that, they put up a HUGE server somewhere that runs all the games. It will solve all the problems. No will get the host, no cheats, no standby and those peoples that lag wont effect the hole game , just lag for themself.

But if Bungie puts up a huge server, it will solve most of the problems they had halo 2 and maybe in halo 3.

I think it is a good idea, what do you think?

Good idea, a little unrealistic, but an idea. A better thing would be for Bungie to post something telling people how to conserve a little bandwidth. ie download your "adult stuff" either before or after logging on to Live. Doing it while you are playing may result in lag.

every1 get a T1 connection itll solve the lag.

  • 06.23.2006 2:49 PM PDT

I think its a great idea.

Let me make myself clear, though. I'm not putting all of the blame on Bungie-- I realize that without idiots with mod-chips, itchy fingers for the standby-button, and a thumb up their a$$, that Bungie wouldn't have to deal with any of that. H2 was a target b/c of the many people that played it. But what now?

I am interested to know (that if you like you say that lag is ALL the people's fault) how Bungie is going to make a game BETTER SUITED for the people. If I'm looney, that's fine, but it's not appropiate for a game developer to produce a video game that no one can play!

And you guys are calling me stupid?

Still won't stop it. Lag is caused by latency and by the host's location (I play with a friend in Malaysia, both of us with good internet, and whenever he hosts I tend to get some lag spikes.)

The host system in H2 wasen't complete, I thought. I think Bungie should have something ( I don't know if bungie can do this) that checks your internet. The first time you log online Halo 3 it will scan your internet connection and put it up on a scale. So if you run MM and there are maybe 16 peoples the "host" will pick the person that is highest on the scale.

If some peoples is on the same scale , it will scan the internet on those peoples and look after who has the best connection at that time

Is this even a Halo 2 issue? It seems a lot of the problems with standby and bridging is more of an XBox Live issue. Unless they make changes to the XBox Live portion, there isn't much that can be done about standby and bridging.

As far as lag goes...I've played some of the newer games that have come out for the 360 and see little to no lag problems. I'm wondering if Halo 2 just doen't have bad net-code. The game was rushed after all, they may have not had the time to really go through it like they should have.

why all the complaing? 80% of the time it isnt even an issue or barely affects the game

Although massive amounts of lag are rare...small problems such as weapons being inconsistant happen almost every game. I don't even pick up a shotgun anymore because the thing doesn't work as intended 90% of the time.

If you would stop downloading -blam!- this wouldnt happen. wow... pr0n is blocked, not p0rn, pr0n, that is really weird as frankie commented on shishka's furry -blam!- in the news post.

No but really I think halo 2's netcode sucks, look at all the weird "host only" stuff, thats not supposed to be like that, and the reason it is is because the original xbox is so outdated its very hard for it to handle all this incoming and outgoing data, so they have to cut it down to as little as possible. ITs also the fact that the xbox has only 64mb RAM, compared to the 360's 512mb and my computers 1.5 gigabytes. Thats really, really slow, and then factor in that its running the game and processing all that incoming information.... its the box, not the connection, not the bridgers.

Dedicated servers would cost A LOT to keep up because of the ammount of Halo 2 players. AND dedicated servers would only hold the purpose of NO lag. I think bungie should keep it with the same system they have for Halo 2 but maybe work on a better network code for no bridgers or standbyers.

Ahh, finally someone sees my point-- the lag issues on H2 are Bungie related. I'm trying to bad-mouth them.

See the original post... this is about what Bungie is going to do with H3 and how to reduce lag while keeping the ability to prevent hacking. H2 didn't seem as laggy before the big update when all of the mods were fixed-- doesn't anyone else see that the added code was to correct issues that in turn generated a considerable amount of latency with the game?

This isn't about poor connections, or even cheaters for that matter. Just because someone is host and they get to use the shotgun better than anyone else doesn't mean they shouldn't use it. Its just obviously unfair and POOR 'netcode' (as its been called).

I want to know Bungie cares about the whole experience-- not just the purchasing experience.

Shut up. Do you have any idea something like that would cost? And it won't change much, it'll be worse in my opinion. Servers would go down sometimes, or the entire thing would lag.

Sigs are stupid.

They will put lag on a space-ship and send it to Mars. What do you think They'll do, nimrod.
