~:O>~~

Going by the success of the Halo franchise I'm surprised that they still needed to rely on a 3rd person publishing company such as Activision to fund development... assuming that they got to see a fraction of the total revenue earned from franchise.

You know... kind of like Eminem taking off of Interscope and creating Shady records?

I guess what I'm asking: why did they need to sign with Activision when it should seem likely that they could have funded their own projects from hereonout whilst keeping more of the revenue and artistic liberties?

Does this count?

So there's this thing called Aerospace....

One does not simply start a publishing company...

Could they? Possibly. Will they? Not likely. The thing is, to publish large games takes a lot of money. Money most developers don't have. Bethesda does (under Zenimax, the lucky guys). Other than the lucky few, they have to be under a publisher and lose the rights. As for the money made from Halo to help with it? Sure, but Microsoft owned the rights, so, in reality, they didn't get all the money. Microsoft got quite a lot, probably most of it.

The fact is, unless they gain an IP they get to keep for themselves (that isn't Marathon) and they make it big and huge, and get big deals for them, Bungie won't get to be its own publishing company besides Aerospace (which is for mobile stuff, not full-blown console titles.)

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

Didn't they have some Oni comics?

That is true, they did manage to make it so they own the IP in their new contract.

I think they did. Not sure where I found 'em, though. I'll have to look.

This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends;
Not with a bang but a whimper.

Could they have? Sure. But apparently they didn't want to.

If we're talking about being on the same scale as Activision or Valve (self-publishing, basically), you have to ask if it's something they really wanted.

Why take up so much precious time trying to create a publishing platform (like Steam) or stress out about manufacturing, when you can have someone else do it for you? Then, you have all of this time and energy to make something you love.

If it's something they really want to do, then perhaps it's worth it. But the question is whether or not they'd like being a publisher.

Actually...

Yeah, I've known since they first released that little detail in the contract :3

Still doesn't change the facts that they need to make it big with it and be able to cash with it before they can be self-publishing on consoles (or publish other developer's titles.)

You just posted that Bungie not being able to keep the Destiny IP for themselves as fact.

And the reality of the situation is, is (yes, a second "is" because I put a comma there. Read it out loud.) that Bungie is a developer, a studio.

Publishing stuff through Aerospace is a different ball game than publishing AAA games under the Bungie name. The company as it currently is, just isn't really up for becoming a publishing giant.

If being a lolhueg publisher is part of Bungie's lofty dreams, then I wish them well.

Perhaps I should have worded it in a better way. I understood it, I suppose nobody else did, though. It's a little late now to change it, I suppose.

I have seen you future

They could, I just don't know why they'd want to.

Bungie would have to buy/hire all of the resources needed to publish the games that they make. That is a massive investment of capital, and was probably deemed implausible for a company that creates one game every three (now two) years.

Bungie probably decided that they were better off using a third party publisher.

I totally agree, maybe Bungie just wants to focus on making video games, but I think they could became their own publishers if they wanted to too. So who knows. Maybe Aerospace is the first step, isn't it?
