Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
The Elder Scrolls Series by Bethesda Game Studios/Bethesda Softworks
Why?
For years before I discovered this series, I had been a Table Top RPG gamer. I've been playing games since the Atari 2600, but every Friday and Sunday night was RP'ing night with my best friends.
And we played many Table Top RPG's as well. AD&D, D&D 3rd Edition, Vampire: the Masquerade then Vampire: the Requiem when the game evolved that way, etc. Our adventure were legendary.
So I had just gotten deep into PC gaming at the time, and one of my best friends suggested a new game for me. He described it as "everything we love about table top gaming, but on your rig". Well, this was a suggestion from one of my best friends, so why wouldn't I go check it out?
From the moment I finished creating my first character, I fell maddeningly in love with The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. I dumped so much time into that game... I shudder to think of the things I could have accomplished if I had spent that time doing anything else. Coupled with some heavy doses of the Marathon Series, I went from being a "Casual" Gamer to Hardcore.
Once the first Xbox dropped into our eager Gamer hands, I got Halo: Combat Evolved as well. That game did for FPS's what the Elder Scrolls did for RPG's. Then my social life went into the toilet with the release of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind for the Xbox.
Needless to say, between the Halo series and the Elder Scrolls series, I really only play those two franchises. PEople may not say that I'm "Hardcore" because I don't play that many different games, but I spend 40+ hours on the 360 every single week. That's more time than I spend at work. lol
But I digress.
These two series are what really got me rolling into Gaming. Gaming has become my only hobby, and luckily, I married a Gamer (she's into the Assassin's Creed series. ;)), so she understands perfectly. Without Marathon, Halo, and The Elder Scrolls, I don't think that I'd be the same guy that I am today. I'd definitely be more boring.
For the future, I'm very much looking forward to Halo 4, but I'm infinitely more excited about Bungie's next game.
Once that drops, I'll probably have to quit my job just to make sure that Bungie's game gets the love and time that it deserves. lol
But that's my experience, and I thank you, Bungie, for being such a huge part of my life and bringing such great games into it.
Peace out.
