I love Halo right under God, but Halo isnt the onlu FPS i like. Medal of Honor, any of those are great, and also Far Cry. Whats Yours?

They call me phat for a reason....

..Elites rule..

GoldenEye for the N64. That wasnt the first FPS but i believe it solely put those kind of games on the map. My friends and i still play that game......just not when were in the mood for Halo

Aye, Goldeneye. It was like the three chambered peanut in a system full of...broken peanuts.

--Marathon goes without saying of course. I hope John doesn't realize I'm also fanatical about the Security Officer.

in no particular order:

Painkiller (though extrememly gory), Tribes series, Unreal series, Time Splitters series, Marathon, Descent series, Battlezone 2 (the first battlezone wasn't that great), Quake series.

i got more, i just can't think of them right now.

Trivia: the first "3D" FPS was Escape from Castle Wolfenstien for the PC. Doom was what really got the FPS genre going, though.

Doom is quite overrated, Marathon is the way to go.

You can always predict what threads the die hard Marathoners here will be drawn to to flaunt their game. And I agree with them.

I also enjoy Rainbow six 3 (PC version - it's infinately better) and Theif.

I've only gotten to play Marathon Infinity, but I love it. I have always been the deathmatch type though, and that is why the Quake games caught my fancy. Unreal Tournament was a favorite back in the day. Now its all about the Halo.

it never occured to me that a genre defining game could be "quite overrated."

For its time it wasn't (overrated and the best there was) and yes it's the one that pushed the FPS into the craze of what it is today- but I have to agree it's over rated, I used to think it was awesome, until I saw marathon....

the fact that Marathon improved on what Doom brought to the table doesn't make Doom overrated. it just means you like Marathon better. like we've already agreed on, Doom was the defining game for the FPS genre. Wolfenstein 3-D set the foundation, but Doom was the defining game. you can't overrate that.
