This is most likely old info but, it seems to me that the ark is the ark from the story in the bible-noah's ark- saving the righteous from the flood. Well, maybe the ark is a fortress or barrier of some kind to protect against the actual flood. Also the Covenant are searching for the ark, or the Ark of the Covenant- another bible reference.
