Ok, so I've been browsing around the forums and noticed a lot of threads about Gravemind, his purpose and relation to the story, and a lot about what he said through Halo 2. However, to understand one, one must know one, so gets down to knowing what truly is Gravemind. What in God's name is it, really? Is it human? Elite? Both? Or is it a mutated Flood that obtained a high level self-awareness? We all know it is one form of Flood, though it being one of the six known forms of the Flood, so far it is the only able to communicate and to show signs of a higher intellect level.

I’ve come to the assumption that Gravemind is not a Flood form that came to be through the mutation of the host, but rather the Queen Flood, much like the Xenomorph Queen from the tetralogy of films, Alien. I also believe that Gravemind is the oldest Flood, its age ranging roughly anywhere from 1,000-100,000 years with basis on his own words, “I am a monument to all your sins,” which implies he may have been around for roughly the same time or even longer than the Covenant and humans; perhaps even existed since the days of the Forerunners. However, this is just a rough theory I have, not something concrete enough for me to have solid evidence to support besides what Gravemind implied in his quote,. Also, the fact that it doesn’t resemble any other forms of the Flood, though even after the most severe of mutations of a host, the Flood usually remains somewhat close in resemblance to the original form of the host, which can be seen in all other forms of the Flood besides Gravemind itself.

So, any takes on this?

A bad idea, and a waste of game design resources.

He is composed of multiple types of beings. In fact, his teeth were originally supposed to be comprised of the skulls of different races. He must have been constructed a long time ago and I wouldnt be surprised if he contains forrunner. However, my only question is does he have his own thoughts. The other flood gather memories and learn from the brain matter of a host victim. Where does his "sentient"-ness come from?

It is a Giant Mix, if you have read the Art of Halo, it's teeth were actually different skulls from absorbed bodies....Like the brain form that Captain Keyes was part of in H1, a mix.

Look... I'm on bungiepedia!

He's a "Control Form" which has taken in several (hundred) intelligent Forerunner, and overtime he collected bodies..and grew to massize sizes, and now controls Delta Halo.

...And so the hero crawled through the fissure on the surface of Tyr. There, the lone Dwarf stared into the cold, dark eyes of Soulblighter...The fiend hefted his blade over his shoulder as a flock of raven took upon his form...

-TBG-

I think he took over a Forunner and learned how to servive the rings by hibernation underground since when you first see him you under ground and hes really smart as well.

Only the dead have seen the end of War...Plato

I mentioned this before but this is the last time.

The Gravemind is very similar to Captain Keyes as the only difference the Keyes brain form was only in it's earliest stages.

One note that the Gravemind is a forerunner and once infected since he had great knowledge was turned into a brain form of the flood. The reason I came to the conclusion of being Forerunner is two reasons.

Why all of a sudden would one of the flood (he's still flood none the less) be smart when compared to the other infection forms. Also does he not have the ability to transport the Arbitor and Master Chief through out Delta Halo?

Not to mention the teleportation is almost identical to the way 343 Guilty Spark did in Halo 1.
