Subject: Should Skillful Trolling Be Allowed?

Spread the love...

Not the all-too common "HAR HAR YOUR MOM HAR HAR", but intricate posts that make you wonder if the OP is actually being serious or not. Or just threads/posts that are obviously trolling but it's so well done that everyone enjoys it.

Should these types of posts/threads be banned?

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

A skillful troll is not detected, so yes?

That's one type of skillful trolling, but another type could be something like this. (example)

It's obvious that it's a troll, but it's still pretty entertaining.

No, acnboy. Spartain Ken 15 is a lesser being. Much like the bacteria that lives in your shit.

My shit bacteria takes offense to that comparison.

Don't make me lel. You won't like me when I lel.

What constitutes trolling is very hard to pin down, it's not a good idea to add another layer of complexity to it. Just about nobody on this site can do it right and the number of people that will understand it is only slightly higher (see Primo's last joke thread).

Exactly.

Clockman was good trolling because nobody thought he was trolling, and those who thought he was were in the vast minority. The thread you linked is just a blog post. It's not trolling. You should learn what trolling is.

However, masterful trolling doesn't have to be opaque. It can be translucent, but then only works if those who get the joke play along.

Amazing example.

And there's nothing wrong with it.

  • 09.23.2012 3:19 PM PDT

Clockman was amazing!

I say go for it, though eventually they should slowly phase out...running the same joke for months might just make it sour.

"That's about all that can be said for plots, which anyway are just one thing after another, a what and a what and a what.

Now try how and why."

A sufficiently good troll will always have plausible deniablity.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

When it's to a point where it's more of a joke than a troll is what you guys are saying. I don't see much of a problem with that.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Reminds me of this thread.

Some instances of "trolling" can violate the "don't be a jerk" rule. But, other than that, stuff like the Primo thread I linked are perfectly legal, imo.

Whoo.

There's a difference between "trolling" and "satire".

A lot of people seem to not be capable of understanding the distinction, it's quite saddening.
