Subject: Why is it that the Covenant has never heard of camouflage?

Citizens of Me! The cruelty of the old Pharaoh is a thing of the past. Let a whole new wave of cruelty wash over this lazy land.

Hear the word of Pharaoh. Build unto me a statue of ridiculous proportion. One billion cubits in height......that I might be remembered for all eternity!

And be quick about it!

This has baffled me forever; all of the Covenant's vehicles are bright glistening purple, and covered with glowing lights. Why do they make no attempt to camouflage themselves, so that they aren't instantly spotted and killed?

Why do Elites wear bright rainbow colours of armour, why would they denote their highest ranking officers with shining gold armour so that they are easy to spot and take out first?

I mean, perhaps this issue is why the UNSC usually won ground battles :P

Although, I'm not complaining, the vibrancy of the Covenant is part of why I love their vehicles and weapons!

They like wearing ceremonial armor.

Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

Different culture; they fight with honor. I think it's mostly cause of the Sangheili, with all their "You have no honor" taunts..

Also, camouflage doesn't really matter if you can become invisible, and have equiement that allows one to see beyond the visible spectrum.

The actual reason is because of design and gameplay... "Shinier, brighter, more color!" ~ Jason Jones

sup.i love halo

I would say because they are either so confident in their power that they are not worried about being camoflauged or on their homeworlds those colors do blend in with the foliage etc..

Every element, every faction in Halo has a distinct theme to differentiate them from everyone else. The UNSC is very familiar in appearance -- using ballistic projectile weapons and driving vehicles that have wheels. While the Covenant are brightly coloured and instantly recognisable through their technology. It helps us identify who we're fighting.

The UNSC blend in. The Covenant stand out. And the Flood are just plain ugly.

This. And they have active camouflage to turn invisible whenever so yeah, thats better than what the UNSC has.

They fight with honor thus the cermimonial armor, -blam!- gets real when they go invisible on you.

I enjoy halo for it's story and when I am in the mood, its gameplay. Reach was significantly worse then I expected but was still a great game (minus the european hitscan fiasco). I am sitting on a two mile wide fence on the subject of halo 4. Most of the things I like a technical aspects though and not story or game play. Plus I am slightly mad they took my elites from MP.

The UNSC was still owned on the ground 98/100 times. Pre-trilogy of course.

*bzzzzzt* Wrong. The UNSC pretty much always won groundside engagements, battles in space were the only times they ever really lost...where did you get that idea?

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Because it was intented for gameplay reasons. But you could understand it as their code of honor. The colors of the armor would show their rank and command level and show that the Elite is not attempting to hide when he fights you.

Same reason space marines of 40k do it. No common sense/completely different mindset toward combat as opposed to us of the real world.

But, probably because they love purple, and would prefer a uniform setup instead of going "Damn, all our -blam!- is decked out for desert camo and now we are in a forest!"

I mean, at least the officers of highest rank also have the highest shielding. Imagine if the minors and zealots had the same (low) shield rating. That'd make it retarded.

-Halo 3 Elite armor descriptions uses the word 'distinctive' for most of the armor

-Elites enjoy combat

-Elites are prone to suicide, berserking near death

-Elites still live by ancient customs and traditions. The samurai definitely stood out with their 'distinctive' attire as opposed to ninja.

-Elites are part of a religious army and their armor is being distributed and controlled by the Prophets. Halo 3 revealed that Assault armor was superior to Combat armor, indicating that the Prophets probably wanted to limit the best Elites (also note how Zealots became noticeably weaker in Halo 2).

The Elites were basically challenging Death and they were being offered up as sacrifices for the Covenant.

Elites can turn invisible basically. That beats out any camoflouged uniform.

Also their technology is pretty advanced so they didn't really HAVE to hide.

you are a good translator
Idiot can be a hard language to learn, but once you get it down, everything becomes so clear! The whole world will make sense to you.

Because they think they are above it. Covenant culture is based on extravagant displays of martial power and strength, so showing who's got the most pimped out armor is a statement of strength. Plus, the Covenant usually are engaging in space where camo really isn't too big of a concern.

Old GTs; RebelRobot, Flamedude

There are all sorts of canonical explanation but the real answer is gameplay.

They're brightly coloured and they fire long slow plasma shots that we can dodge. The Covenant is designed from a gameplay perspective. If they behaved like the UNSC they would be harder to spot and they would use direct fire units that instantly hit their targets.

Imagine Halo 3 where all Wraiths were replaced by Covenant controlled Scorpions. It would be impossible.

That is true; when you betray your marines and they turn on you, they are far more formidable then actual enemies, ironically :P

I like how people automatically think that the UNSC just wins on ground engagements by default because it's been mentioned that the UNSC does better on the ground and have won several ground victories.

I don't know about you guys but...we totally got raped on Reach. That's just ground side.

Even if the UNSC did better it doesn't mean they wiped the floor with the Covenant. It was probably very, very, close.

Active camo in Halo works about as well as screaming "YOU CAN'T SEE ME!" in bright tie-dye colors.

Not really.

That very famous quote (I think Staten said it) said that ground battles were a tough fight, and even if the humans managed to win (suggesting they didn't do so normally), they would suffer terrible losses.

So no, humans certainly did not have the advantage on the ground, with an exception to the Spartans.

All the Halo games have essentially been about Human victories on the ground, while the Covenant lolpwn everyone from space.

Yet humanity tended to lose most major ground engagements, especially on Harvest in later years.
