According to what I know, you can play a videogame with your friends through LAN without an internet access. All you have to have is a router and two ethernet crossover cables. Probably you can play through LAN without a router either, but actually I've never tried that.

The whole point in the LAN option is to provide a multiplayer experience without requiring Internet access, so sure.

As the guy said above, you'll need ethernet cables to do it; you're likely already using one to connect to your modem/router for your Internet access.

If it's just a connection between two machines that you're looking for, it's pretty much as simple as connecting up an ethernet cable to the network ports of both machines.

With a network switch or a router, all the PCs involved just need a straight-through ethernet cable and connect directly to the switch.

To go directly from one PC to another you will need a crossover ethernet cable.

The difference between the two is how the wiring inside the cable is arranged. If you happen to have any old ethernet cable odds are it's straight through. Most crossover cables have tape wrapped around it and it is specifically written on them.
