I'll be completely honest... Too long; didn't read

I skimmed. To summarize my thoughts, your affairs are yours alone, if you need help then ask but not for the purpose of making someone feel bad.

The main rule I use on the internet is simply; don't be a jerk. Jerk being paraphrased from another word, but that's neither here no there. The point is, don't go looking for a fight, be courteous and civil, and refrain from being overly serious. It's the internet ladies and gents, nothing is taken seriously here.

@Helveck

Just an Average Joe...

I think you completely missed the point, and blew this whole thing up on an exaggeration scale of ten times its original form.

I said this place shouldn't be serious. But everyone comes here to try and enjoy themselves, so why create drama or feed it? Out of boredom? Feelings of superiority?

And I think a lot of people have mistaken my questions posed in this thread as ignorance on my part... As though I'm not aware of why or how things are the way they are, when I am full well aware of the majority of causations for this, but I inquired and ask questions because I was curious to hear what everyone else thought, not because I was clueless. And I only mention this now because your post seemed moderately condescending.

Do you know what the real problem is? People who take something like this way to seriously and then post an 18 paragraph post about it like there the internet version of John Lock, who think they will enlighten the ignorant masses. This is not the first time I have seen a thread like this, nor will it be the last I'm sure. This is a internet forum my friend, not some great civilization where we need to unite against the evil barbarian horde. I left this site for about 5 months, not because I got tired of people saying stupid things or because of arguments, but because I got tired of all the drama that would happen and people would start posting about how "things have changed" and "it's not the group they joined", they thought it was such a big deal, when in reality it was just someone I have never met in real life complaining about a internet forum.

News flash, it really does not matter. If B.net is a big thing in your life, good for you my friend, but don't drag other people into it because we don't care if people are getting "driven off" or where not "uniting under a shining banner" because quite frankly it does not matter at all.

Personally, I think it's in part due to the anonymity that the internet grants. The feeling of safetly and detachment makes people impulsive, more likely to voice their negative opinions of something or someone - because they can't see the person behind the words, and vice versa. I would reckon that the vast, vast majority of people here wouldn't act like this in person - but the very nature of the communication leads to altered behaviour.

That, and the fact that a lot people are inherantly quite childish - always wanting to be right and to have the last word. In a non-internet conversation, if the topic hits such a block, the topic may be changed. On a forum, the topic is clearly defined - deviation is frowned upon, as such it begins to stagnate and these petty clashes of opinion and one-upmanship become far more prevelant.

So I ask, after my extremely verbose rant, what do you think drives Members to fight with one another, or to pick on and hate one another when indifferences are so easy to ignore? And do you think it's simple to for one to practice a sort of corrected attitude of being more tolerable and respectful to people they may not be so fond of? If so, would this make the site an overall more enjoyable place?
Great read. I was going and going, thinking when is it going to end, scrolling to the next paragraph seeing no end in sight, when this happens I usually just skip it and post based on what I think the person is talking about, but with your post, I generally seemed interested and kept reading. Kudos.

when indifferences are so easy to ignoreThis is not true. People cling and make their differences known, and known, and known. They let their opinions on anything and everything known, and they'll take the stance to an extreme just to be heard. These people are not easy to ignore, sometimes you just have to respond. Most of these people are trolling.

I try to stay away from personal attacks. I take issue with their stances, not on their character, or anything about them really.

I have noticed that people take issue with these other things and things carry over to other threads or PMs. I've done it in my early days here. I regret it.

I believe it is easy to practice a corrected behaviour, I do. But it's harder when there are such LOUD personalities here (most belonging to trolls).

Sounds like your talking about family. In a way we are a family. And with all families, there is a dynamic that binds us together. It is this dynamic that can cause friction between nodes.

The advice I can offer is, when you see something negative, contribute something positive, and hope for the best.

this thread does remind me of the forming-storming-norming-performing stages that groups of humans naturally go through. the Community should, by now be somewhere where the 'nuts and bolts' get discussed this way.

trouble is, what are we all trying to achieve together except just passing time...waiting.

perhaps it's just the way we keep the hope alive.

I agree. however it will always be impossible to have everyone unite together, there are simply to many different types of people as you have stated.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

So I ask, after my extremely verbose rant, what do you think drives Members to fight with one another, or to pick on and hate one another when indifferences are so easy to ignore? Opinions are what cause fights.
Yes, just ignore people you don't like.
Maybe.

I appreciate reading people's thoughts on this matter, but I have to be honest I would be a hypocrite if I said I didn't partake in the negativity at times.

I consider myself a mature person (which I should be at 27 with a wife and a kid), but I still often succumb to pull of confrontation on forums and within the game. I would even like to say that I never start any fights, but that would also be untrue.

My best guess as to why this happens is that deep down inside we believe that were not actually interacting with a person. I would not belittle or tea bag my friend out of hatred, because I know how it affects him. But when I see an avatar of a person, or read comments followed by some username, they just don't seem real. Or if they are "real", they are just some terrible person that is out to destroy my opinions/fun/whatever. They don't have a past, or real problems, or anything that is meaningful to me.

And while I'm not overly enthusiastic about the "serious" or "deep" conversations on a game forum, I think it is helpful to have discussions like this from time to time so I can see that you all are actual people. The more "human" we are to each other, the easier it will be to co-exist in a fictional world.

The problem I have with the community is that I'm not allowed to have a controversial opinion or I'm branded a troll/ignorant bigot. It really rubs me the wrong way when the majority of the community claims they want respect and openness, but only if everyone agrees with them.

You are "allowed" to have whatever opinions you want.

But by expressing your opinions, you are exposing yourself to criticism.

That's other people's opinion about your opinion. And it's not limited to "this community".
