A slightly un-self-explanatory topic title i admit... but let me explain

If this game, as a First Person Shooter, aims to give us the 'Chief's view of the action, then everything possible should be done to immerse the player in the game, and in every situation that occurs. Right?

Then surely, it would be a better representation of the MC's perspective if the edges of the visor were bordering the screen, as it is clear that his field of vision would at least be partially restricted by the sides of his helmet.

This HAS been done before, in Metroid Prime, and personally I feel it is an incredibly effective, yet simple way of creating an immersive atmosphere. Playing the game, you almost feel as though you are restricted within this suit. And I personally would love to be placed firmly in Chief's heavily armoured shoes on what could be his last outing (anything more than a trilogy is pushing it methinks...), and have it be an experience to remember.

It makes the existance of a HUD far more feasable. For example, rather than a floating ammo counter at the top right of the screen, would it not be more 'real' if the ammo counter was at the top right of a visor HUD? Not to mention the HUD light which Spartan's use to communicate silently (I think that's right anyway?), would also look more effective if it was flashing on the HUD inside a visor, as opposed to a little blinking light at the corner of the screen.

Finally, it opens up possibilities of many graphical effects. Water running off the visor, glare from the sun or an explosion, distortion of your vision from sources of electrical interference, complete loss of your HUD from an EMP blast, internal reflections that occur if a large light source (whatever it may be) goes off near the MC, leaving the player staring momentarily at a pair of eye's (the 'Chiefs). And there's probably more that I dont care to think of right now... thinking hurts. But would that not be ASS KICKINGLY AWESOME?

For those of you have never played either Metroid Prime (for shaaaaaaaame!!!), this is what i mean by the visor edges showing... it might make my argument clearer... y'never know:

Screenshot 1
Screenshot 2
Screenshot 3

I realise this isn't an original idea by any means, but it is very, very cool nonetheless, bringing with it another subtle level of immersion, realism, and opening the door to those 'next-gen' effects that you know you all want.

If this has been posted before, my bad, but I've never seen this mentioned so I thought I might as well just do it. I have nothing else to do anyway ^_^

What are your thoughts? Yay or Nay?

[[Edit - Added Screenshot 3, illustrates splattering of... stuff on the visor]]

bungie r niec guy, he r dont do anything to u, he only gave away free beta codes is that so wrong? microsfot was all liek 'YO BUGNIE PUT UR COEDS INTO DIS BOX AND WE R PUT LOCK ON IT' and bungie was all like 'oooo okay :D' but little r bungie no, microsft r hav bad lock, and BADDD BADD people gots in and stole ALL beta codes D: now we dun has none left, if nething, blame microsoft 4 bad lockss and allow bad peoples to steel code

Yeah, I was thinking about the same thing. Someone had a screenshot of the part in the trailer kind of like this -he photoshopped/drew the gun and the visor in- Also, about that light thing, in the trailer, you see a light go off in the Chief's helmit and then he nods. I know this has been said before so, I'm prepared for major flaming. But anyways, great not-so original new idea :-)

Technically, nothing says the Chief is looking out his visor. He might be fed the image some other way. We don't really know.

You mentioning Metroid Prime makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. However, I disagree. At least, it should be able to be turned off.

So it would be similar to when you click zoom when you have an smg or plasma rifle. Maybe make a bit more of the screen visible though

I think the problem may be that it wasn't present in the first two games. I never gave it much thought, but looking at the screenshots, it does give some promising possibilities. They could easily make it look awesomely real, moreso than Metroid Prime, on the 360. Not that I've ever had any problem immersing myself in the games, but if they could pull it off where it doesn't effect gameplay, I think they should go for it. It would also be nice to be able to turn it off, though.

Having water slick off of it while you drive a Ghost through the rain would be sweet. And imagine a snow level where you had to worry about moisture freezing to it, or a desert level with sand blasting off of it. It could polarize and depolarize quickly to account for glare. I like the EMP thought, too. That could have lots of cool game effects. It's a neat idea, to say the least.

i like that idea. as long as it doesn't really restrict too much vision, i think its fine. the rain dripping off and all would be cool too...but it would make it rather difficult to see. especially with the flood.

I think it would make that part of zooming more realistic, futuristically speaking, too. It wouldn't have to take up the whole screen when you zoom. He has a smartlink already. Why not wirelessly transmit a zoomed image from the scope to the visor? It would mean you could keep the other stuff from your HUD active. It also makes sense that MC wouldn't have to actually raise the gun to his eye and try to look through a scope with that helmet on.

That's the point. The rain could also be dripping off the hood (the part that sticks out from the front of the helmet). It would change depending on motion and degree of vertical perspective, too.

well hell, this isn't Metroid Prime, and it isn't GRAW...it's Halo.

And for the guy who mentioned the blue light on his visor...it's the reflection of the lightning flashes in the sky. It looks like he nods because he is coming to a stop...just like when you stop your car your head moves forward. Notice the position of the lightning in his visor and then look at the same spot in the sky in the next shot.

Also, in Metroid Prime (excellent games), there is an option that allows for your visor to "lag" behind you slightly whenever you change your angle of perspective. (i.e. turning left or right) It doesn't affect gameplay at all, but it is very immersive, adding to the visor itself. That would be a welcome feature in my eyes.

Now that I don't like. Remember that the armor was custom fitted to the Spartans. There's no reason for it not to move perfectly with the head. Trying to incorporate eye movement into it wouldn't be easy.

I don't see why not,as long as it doesn't effect gamelplay.

I dont think so i would find it distracting and annoying, also if you want realism, why does the Chief not blink?
Just my opinion.

Thanks for the responses, and I think I have to be won over to the view of giving the option of having it. I'm sure some people would prefer playing without, since its more 'Halo' i guess (which is by no means a bad thing)

To those who have said things about it obstructing vision... well it does, but only about a couple of centimetres around the edge of the screen, nothing that would give you a discernable advantage or disadvantage that's for sure. It's surprising how annoying it ISN'T, and just how functional it is.

Of course it wouldn't be the end of the world if this wasn't used, and in all probability it won't be, but it'd still be worlds better with the option to enable it

  • 06.25.2006 10:19 AM PDT

I think it would be a really good idea. The only thing is, since it wasn't present in the first two games, the visor would have to be really small. We're not used to seeing this, so anything too large on the screen would turn us off immediately. Good idea though.

Realism isn't the MC blinking... it's you blinking while you are playing the game.

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.
Teach a man religion, and he will starve to death praying for a fish.

I would like an inside of the helmet view, like in republic commando. It really does help create a more immersive experience. I would also like more realistic motion capture from the 1st person perspective. In DOOM 3, the camera captures up and down, side to side and a left to right turning motion. I think it looks a lot better then a gun just moving up and down as everything moves by you.

"heh"

Another thing about the helmet. In Metroid Prime I liked how it would lag behind, that is when Samus was turning left, the edges of the visor would turn left a bit slower, which they would. Another thing I loved is when you looked up when it was raining, little drops of rain would land on your visor. It was great.

I have had this idea too, well before H2 came out. I would love to see this implemented into Halo 3. Weather effects like rain and snow or blood can splatter against the Visor...*drools* awesome...
