I'd be totally fine with the spread if it were entirely consistent. The fact that it's random is the same reason I don't like bloom; it comes down to a dice throw.
The Halo 3 campaign spread was tighter. I might go and record that one of these days so I can compare it to the multiplayer spread. It feels consistent, but I'm not sure. It's at least a bit tighter. Halo 2 had no spread, but it also was a bit nooby. Sometimes entire shots would go on the player when they should have missed due to bullet magnetism or autoaim. I hate hitscan with a passion, but Bungie should have made the spread consistent. I think Reach was their happy medium. They had bloom (random spread) and hitscan. I would prefer the opposite: projectiles and consistency.
Just the thing is it's hard, and maybe even not possible, to make projectiles consistent.. that's why they're going to use hitscan. Well maybe not, are there any other games that don't have shot registering problems that are not hit scan?
I just think you're on a lone boat here- most people, who are actually informed, are excited about hit scan and aren't seeing a problem with it
Yeah, I know people like hitscan, but it doesn't change the fact that it's a problem with console gaming. A lot of PC games use projectiles which means they take more skill. The problem here is bad internet and bad netcode...not projectiles. Maybe it's something we can't get right for years until everyone has good internet and such.
For example, most Quake guns use projectiles. The shotgun and machine gun uses hitscan, but that's about it. Crysis uses projectiles. Battlefield 2 uses projectiles. There are games that use projectiles and are known for having high skill gaps.
Hard to make projectiles consistent? That's the most retarded thing I ever heard.
If that's really the most retarded thing you've ever heard, I greatly envy you.
I think his point was that the package registration on projectiles tend to be very inconsistent (have a look at Crysis 2 multiplayer or even Halo 3 for that matter). Quake did very well I suppose. I miss Quake a lot.
