Let me ask you though, if a thread was made that was not about politics and turned into one, why should the OP be punished?
You weren't punished, you got a warning. Like "Hey, stop this before you get punished."

And, I have an answer to all your questions. It's up to the admins and moderators discretion to lock, warn, and ban whatever they believe the correct repercussions are. You agreed with those rules when you accepted the Code of Conduct.

Live with it, move on, stop making a bigger deal of something that it shouldn't be.

I've been unofficially warned about something a while back, it was completely unintentional, but having had it explained to me, I can clearly see why the said action had to be taken.

It's exactly the same here. You did something, unintentionally, so rather than banning you, you've been given the benefit of the doubt.

You're joking, right? Discussing the upcoming presidential election is inherently political. The fact that you don't understand why you were warned is baffling to me.

I've challenged my beliefs. What is the book about?

I find that this is usually untrue. If religious people honestly, diligently and intelligently challenged their beliefs, there would be no religious people.

I feel it is unnecessary and frankly the implications of being punished for assumptions makes me nervous as a thread maker. Does this mean I am accountable for flame war if I didn't start them? Is it right to punish people for things that may never happen?
You weren't punished, you were warned. Cut the slippery slope crap.

Warnings affect gaining forum titles and are permanently logged as moderation action against me. So yes, I am being punished.

But my point is should people be punished for something that "may" happen in a thread, even if they are not the ones to cause it? This thread was not meant to spark any kind of political debate, I didn't try to bait anyone.
Boo hoo. Rules are preventative measures, what could happen is all that matters when formulating them. In your case you made a thread that directly involved subject matter that is clearly disallowed. You were told not to do it anymore, simple. You can debate whether political discussion should be allowed or not, but the way you were treated was not unreasonable at all.

But I thought you didn't care about titles? They are literally the only things this warning affects, and they're not something visible to you in any way, shape, or form.

Never mention politics, in any sense, whatsoever. Ever. Easy as that.

Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I understand that

My point is though, what the warning sounds like, the thread itself was not political, it was that it COULD become political.

With that in mind, I clearly did not make it to be a political thread and anyone who did is de-railing the thread.

Now let me ask you this, if someone de-rails my thread with a political debate/flame war, should I receive moderator action for it?

Keep in mind that everything was completely civil before the mod locked it so this is all assumptions on the mods part.

How can a thread involving the presidential debate not have anything to do with politics?

I understand the OP was AIMING for the topic to be more on the armor side, But seriously. If you've been here for more than a month, you should know that anything remotely associated with an upcoming election will turn into a political thread.

No, that is not what the thread was about. The thread was about a promotion being offered by Microsoft for watching a stream on their service which happened to be political. Keep in mind the thread was not made to be about the election, it was made to discuss the promotion.

I would also like to point out that everything was civil and on-topic before the lock.

I understand the mods want to keep order on the forums but I feel it is not right to send warnings/bans to people who make threads because something "may" happen.

There was no indication a flame war was going to erupt in this thread, this was just unnecessary.

Holy flaming nutsack, Ken. Your thread was about the PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. Whether or not it was about the presidential election via an incident with a gaming company, it was about the PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. That is one of the most quintessentially political things in existence.

What part of 'it doesn't matter what your intentions were' do you not understand? You can argue that the thread didn't turn into a political discussion, but you're ignoring the fact that it still could've, which is the whole point of the warning.

The more and more you post about this, the more and more it seems like you just want to bawww about getting a warning that obviously didn't affect your title at all, which seems to be your main fear.

No, it's not silly, it's diffusing the situation before it even happens. Preventing undesirable conduct is the whole point of having such rules as "no religious or political discussion".

The election was tied to the thread but it was not the focus of the thread. There is a clear difference between me making a thread about a political election than one a armor bonus for watching something on xbox live.

The thread was not made to be nor ended up being political. It is possible to have discussion like this and not have any issues. For over 4 pages the thread was fine.

If it actually got out of hand, then it should be locked. If not, I don't see the problem with it.

Also if it did get out of hand, why am I the one to get warned, what did I do? I didn't de-rail the thread and make it political.

  • 09.30.2012 12:35 PM PDT

@spaboolly

Read the message and learn from it, Ken. You were warned for posting a thread on a topic that, while not directly tied to politics, was likely to turn into a political discussion. One person making a heated comment could easily spark a flame war that would blatantly violate the rules of discussion and disrupt the forum.

Even though this was not your intent, your action still would have been responsible for this. A good poster thinks about the possible repercussions of a topic before posting. That was the lesson I believe you were meant to learn.

So?

No one else took the bait. Why should a thread be locked and the OP be warned/banned because of one troll?

Should we lock and ban the OPs of everyone who has John Cena or a spammer come into their thread?

The thread was very civil and should serve as an example that threads with lose political ties can be perfectly civil.
