I think humanity numbered in the trillions, or at least the hundreds of billions. So they could probably afford to lose a LOT of soldiers.
You are probably right about the numbers, but think about it. The majority of those people were likely Glassed. The UNSC usually evacuated civilians out of war zones. Soon after the first few glassings I'm sure they learned to evacuate civilians OFF the planets.
Yes you are right, but what about the Planets where the Covenant Fleet turned up unexpected, say Reach for example. The Corvette does not count as the Fleet by the way. They try. They can't get 100% of the population out, but some were saved.
I still think the majority of casualties were military ones. There were entire colonies the Covenant missed as well, and they only went after important ones in general (like Reach).

IIRC i read something that Earth as not the last Human colony, just one of the last important ones.
