Whenever I play halo I wonder...
I see marines get killed or a frigate get shot down and I think to myself "How many marines/frigates, can the UNSC afford to lose? Are there even any soldiers or ships to adequately replace this? can they even afford to suffer these casualties?"

Know what I mean?
UNSC gets casualties and I think, "How many more do we have to replace that?" or "These guys are dead is that it?"

I ask this because of the huge losses the unsc took against the covenant already

"No, Hoobla. No."

When fighting for ALL of mankind, there are sure to be plenty of soldiers...

You look around. You fire your weapon before you realize.
Its just me. I fall and you walk up. You cry why.
When i pop up. You look at me in wonder. I say,"ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL."
You bend to my will and go to a cliff, walk off, and fall.
The last thing you hear is me stating as fact,"All will fail the battle of life, you just went early"

I think humanity numbered in the trillions, or at least the hundreds of billions. So they could probably afford to lose a LOT of soldiers.

You are probably right about the numbers, but think about it. The majority of those people were likely Glassed.

I think, say in Halo 3, they were just gathering scraps of soldiers together. They didn't really have any specified units. So whoever died it was just an unfortunate loss really. The war ceased at the end of Halo 3 so anybody who died was really just buying time in a way.

I enjoy halo for it's story and when I am in the mood, its gameplay. Reach was significantly worse then I expected but was still a great game (minus the european hitscan fiasco). I am sitting on a two mile wide fence on the subject of halo 4. Most of the things I like a technical aspects though and not story or game play. Plus I am slightly mad they took my elites from MP.

Pre-Cov war humanity numbered somewhere in the 30 billion range and IIRC 21 billion died during the war.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

They were fighting a war in which loosing meant extermination.

Of course they could afford the losses if they had to be done to preserve Humanity.

The UNSC usually evacuated civilians out of war zones. Soon after the first few glassings I'm sure they learned to evacuate civilians OFF the planets.

Yes you are right, but what about the Planets where the Covenant Fleet turned up unexpected, say Reach for example. The Corvette does not count as the Fleet by the way.

They try. They can't get 100% of the population out, but some were saved.

I still think the majority of casualties were military ones. There were entire colonies the Covenant missed as well, and they only went after important ones in general (like Reach).

Most of posters at here are horrendously wrong about population.. . *facepalm*

Please read Evolutions!

Initial Population is 39 billion and Cortana states that after the war, about 23 billion were killed.

There are factories which supply their marines.

During the Scarab battle on The Storm, marines will constantly come outside of a room to operate the missile pods if you kill them.

During the warehouse battles, if you kill all your marines, at some point, you'll get an infinite supply of them.

And of course, you encounter as many as 40 marines on the level. The Storm clearly shows that the UNSC were not losing; they were just letting you carry them to victory. That's why most of them don't even follow you through the warehouse.

But to be serious, I'm sure they're all valued. I've had many instances where one marine decides to go total badass and wrecks the Covenant. Why would I want to lose him?

This

IIRC i read something that Earth as not the last Human colony, just one of the last important ones.

I am a monument to all your sins

The total casualty figures are in the hundreds of billions I believe. The majority of the human race was wiped out.

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

Trillions of billions of millions.

I just need 343i / Traviss / Bear to state that in a book/game/game trailer somewhere.

Scrapped together because it's near impossible to get extra reinforcements past covenant ships. Let's not forget that the covenant found earth, decimated its defences and landed during Halo 2, they didn't really give us much time to prepare.

Alright so what of the ships?
Whenever the UNSC loses a ship I know for a fact that it cant be readily replaced.

When the Savannah was destroyed it was like the UNSC was sucker punched.
