Ok, I realize that "killing" off the main character in entertainment is somewhat "cliched" (although not much here in Western culture as Stigibird pointed out), but sometimes it can be unexpected and dramatic. And don't we want a Dramatic ending? I can tell you what I don't want is some cheezy, and predictable, cliched ending that the protagonist saves the day, everyone celebrates, the end. I want Halo 3 to be more darker, more emotional and more dramatic, and also TRUE to the franchise. In case you haven't noticed Halo is about SACRIFICE. As ICEMAN ASSASS1N pointed out:
Master Chief represents hope. Remember what Johnson said at the beginning of H2- "People need Heroes Chief." His purpose is to fight. Remember that, it's key to what I'm about to say. MC was born to Fight. He lived to Fighting. And inevitably, he will die fighting. He only has one purpose: essentially to kick arse. When the war is over, the Fight will be finished, and so will the Chief. Without anything to kill, he has no purpose, no meaning. He is the archetype hero- one who is called to duty to give people hope. When the chips are down he arises to pull off a dramatic last second victory. But all heroes are known for one thing: Sacrifice. Therefore, MC will prolly sacrifice himself in some way, whether it be activating the halos or whatever, in order to fulfill his destiny: Fight. When there is no one to fight, he has served his purpose, and he can leave this world with his fate accomplished.
Coffee Time!!!!
This makes more sense than having him live, and as theSniperDevil stated the Master Chief is:
born to fight a war, lived to fight the war, died to end the war
Also, if any of you read the books, there is much evidence that state that MC is this, "war tool", that he's bred for a sole purpose "combat", so it would only be suitable that he dies in combat saving the world. Considering he's given everything he's got to the enemy, so his death is not forgotten and much more dramatic. Much like someone else I know, perhaps Jesus, but that's another story for another time. Anyways another thing to point out is the amount of foreshadowing the games and possibly the trailer have to MC's fate. For example Cortana's words "I know you, your past... your future", notice her tone on "your future". She's sad, she seems to know that the Chief's prolonged death is to finally become fate.
