Good Points on why Chief shouldnt die.......if you wanna debate, here's why I think he should:

Master Chief represents hope. Remember what Johnson said at the beginning of H2- "People need Heroes Chief."
His purpose is to fight. Remember that, it's key to what I'm about to say. MC was born to Fight. He lived to Fighting. And inevitably, he will die fighting. He only has one purpose: essentially to kick arse. When the war is over, the Fight will be finished, and so will the Chief. Without anything to kill, he has no purpose, no meaning. He is the archetype hero- one who is called to duty to give people hope. When the chips are down he arises to pull off a dramatic last second victory. But all heroes are known for one thing: Sacrifice. Therefore, MC will prolly sacrifice himself in some way, whether it be activating the halos or whatever, in order to fulfill his destiny: Fight. When there is no one to fight, he has served his purpose, and he can leave this world with his fate accomplished.

mc has gotta live he just has to....(wipe away tears) okay my theory is the final scene mc and arbiter have some sort of chance to wipe out both flood and covanant that have turned on elites and separatists but it will destroy 1 of them so arbiter knowing that his entire life was a lie chooses to let mc live and destroy himself. mc then returns to earth and is heralded as hero for saving the galaxy!...still what do the halo rings do and could they be targeted to destroy a specific race?

If he was going to die he would do it in a situation that would win the war for the humans, not to take control of a building.

No offence to the OP, but the idea of MC dieing is eprfectly reasonable.

Firstly, he wouldnt die mid battle. It would be a self sacrifice or injury made, during his final action to "end the fight"

it also has an irony.. The MC was a tool of war, the war is over, he has no use. (ok can go on to peace keeping, but tbh, MC's life was killing covie). When i imagine him dieing, i imagine him either...

1. Setting off a bomb in high charity killing flood, bad covie and bad cortana (if that happens) in one, alas killing himself.

2. Killing some big dude prohpet, saving earth, but as he walks away, he collapses.

It woud not be a good way to die for a war hero, to succumb to old age/ non battle death.

which is why it makes sence that he could die at the end of halo 3

born to fight a war, lived to fight the war, died to end the war

yea he should die, this is the end of the trilogy, and like another great trilogy the hero dies, remember Neo...THE ONE...well yea its only right, but hey bungie might have a scene where he dies and peace is returned and after the credits the camera zooms in on master chiefs visor and u see a light blink on...DUM DUM DUM

  • 06.26.2006 7:05 AM PDT

Master Chief dying at the end of the story would still make perfect sense. Your argument is based around the fact that there's no one else to carry the game. If Master Chief were to die, he'd die at the end of the game.

The only thing I want to say is that I think that you will be fighting alongside some of the new covenant. So I belive that you wont go down alone but with the arbiter and his men alongside of you facing flood, or brutes and the old covenant. Thats my idea.

No No No

Master Chief won't die, he'll do what all good hero's do after the war is over. Go and finish some unfinished business.

Halo 3 will end with him flying off to find and blow up the other halo's that are floating about.

Arbiter is going to die, as foreshadowed by Mercy. "You will die as each Arbiter has before you" so in literal terms as long as he remains the Arbiter, he will die in combat at some point. Arbiter will be the one to kill Truth, for the centuries that his peoples, the elites, where manipulated into doing the Prophets biding. Cortana will destroy the Gravemind along with herself before finnaly shutting down( big emotional moment with the MC) Masterchief will be left with the activation of the Ark, and i hope a most awesome maw style ending in which the Ark is set to autodestruct previously by the Gravemind.

Since Masterchief can be interpretted as jesus, it would be fitting for him to die and remove all our sins(the flood). Also he is a soldier specifically designed to give his life for humanity. But Bungie could also leave his death as a cliff hanger. Have a little post credit cutscene of the wind blowing away sand to reveal masterchief visor and helmet, or show his helmet left on the ground with footprints leading into the horizon, cue Marty for that final score.

Although so far with the way Bungie handled Halo 2,

Why do people think MC would go on to lead the globe..? You know that the Spartans were created for conflicts that were Human vs Human, right?

I'm sure they'd keep Spartans around, and keep the project alive incase another threat comes along (you know, there's a large section of the galaxy that the Flood can survive in around Alpha Halo)

Also, 343 GS could lead humans on a quest to unlock the mysteries of the Forerunner (Just like the Covies, but with a guide, and with a good purpose). You know what? There will be flood, and maybe Brutes etc.

Who will be the best people to fight their way through and protect the human voyagers? Spartans. Don't act like Spartans should be wiped away just because the main war is over.

The fact remains is that the Master Chief is likely the only one left to lead the world.

He may lose everything he ever cared about... he keeps fighting.
He may lose his mother figure... he keeps fighting.

The best solution for him would be that he is still out there at the end.

Marty also said that this was going to be a "Return of the King" and making the Master Chief the leader of the remanants of the human race would work.

You've got to think about the future of humanity at the end of Halo 3. If the Master Chief dies, it is a good bet that everyone will die (again, refer to my ending).

Lord Hood, Dr. Halsey, or the Arbiter are much better fit for sacrificing themselves to destroy their enemies. If the Forerunners reappear, they may want to speak to someone that comes close to their technology (although the MJOLNIR armor is 10 models short of Forerunner technology).

ummm what makes people think that MC can "rule" earth when this is all and done (assuming that earth survives). I dont think a general could rule people, military experts =/= rulers. (unless in a military dictatorship).

What do you think the Earth government was?

It looks like it was a militarized government ruled by Lord Hood.

Also, the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer is the highest NCO rank in the Navy.

Without war the cheif is destined to cryo-sleep, he's 41, but how many of them years were spent in cryo-sleep without aging? I think the cheif will be put to sleep once again at the end of Halo3 not for good, but just so we know he wont be gone forever.

you need air dude.............

The thing is though, is that Master Cheif could be a tragic hero. MC thinks he may be doing good yet the covenant still breaks through the Earth's defence, citys burning, marnies and cillivians dying all around, blood, guts, heads rolling, bullets firing, people screaming, glass shattering. imagine that....

Whats there to debate? The simple fact is that if the cheif died, his ghost would pop out of your T.V. and go on a rampage through bungie studios. Cause hes just that good. Anyway, thered probably be mass protests to change the ending, so no way the cheif will die.

I dont know if anyone realised this, but so far, from what i've seen, the covenent have only faught in africa.... there are more humans and political figures around.. no need to have the MC rule the humans... but i do see a promotion in rank coming soon..like commander or someting higher than Master Chief

The last level would probaly be this:The Gravemind has gathered every flood that has escaped Delta Halo to come to high Charity AND if Covenant Cruisers might be inside high Charity they would launch so he would have his own fleet.Since he has cortana hed know where Earth is and would attack. The Arbiter and The Seperatist Covenant would probaly already have arrived at Earth and a Uneasy Alliance might happen. The covenant would probaly retreat and so as Mc you would board High Charity and Destroy it.But Cortana would be left behind and as the dropship with the chief leaves he would look through a viewport and then a marine walks up to him and says. "Is it over sir?" and then the chief says. "Yeah i think weve finished this fight." And the camera zooms out to see all the human and seperatist covenant ships figthting the covenant and flood ships and then the credits come and the REAL ending happens. It shows high Charitys remains on the moon and Penitent Teangant and flood coming out and then the player finds out COrtana managed to dowload her conshisness or something into him and so she lives for more then 7 years.

Ok, I realize that "killing" off the main character in entertainment is somewhat "cliched" (although not much here in Western culture as Stigibird pointed out), but sometimes it can be unexpected and dramatic. And don't we want a Dramatic ending? I can tell you what I don't want is some cheezy, and predictable, cliched ending that the protagonist saves the day, everyone celebrates, the end. I want Halo 3 to be more darker, more emotional and more dramatic, and also TRUE to the franchise. In case you haven't noticed Halo is about SACRIFICE. As ICEMAN ASSASS1N pointed out:

Master Chief represents hope. Remember what Johnson said at the beginning of H2- "People need Heroes Chief." His purpose is to fight. Remember that, it's key to what I'm about to say. MC was born to Fight. He lived to Fighting. And inevitably, he will die fighting. He only has one purpose: essentially to kick arse. When there is no one to fight, he has served his purpose, and he can leave this world with his fate accomplished.

This makes more sense than having him live, and as theSniperDevil stated the Master Chief is:
born to fight a war, lived to fight the war, died to end the war
Also, if any of you read the books, there is much evidence that state that MC is this, "war tool", that he's bred for a sole purpose "combat", so it would only be suitable that he dies in combat saving the world. Considering he's given everything he's got to the enemy, so his death is not forgotten and much more dramatic. Much like someone else I know, perhaps Jesus, but that's another story for another time. Anyways another thing to point out is the amount of foreshadowing the games and possibly the trailer have to MC's fate. For example Cortana's words "I know you, your past... your future", notice her tone on "your future". She's sad, she seems to know that the Chief's prolonged death is to finally become fate.

Dude.. if the Master Chief does die then he'll die taking the Covenant down with him. I definitely don't believe the Master Chief will die having failed his mission. I think that somehow the Master Chief manages to take down the Covenant but in the process he will die too. That is possible, but what your thinking of isn't what was stated before.

If you analyze what this post is about, and why Bungie has'nt destroyed it, you'd know that they want to build up anticipation and ultimately, blow everyone out of the water with something no one would have ever thought of. Bungie hints at both stories of life and death for MC. Arbiter will die, therefore MC must die, or leave a never to be answered question.
If death is their answer, I predict MC and Arbiter staged in a suspense filled heartwarming end is most likely. Either an "accident" occurs, or something that will break out the Kleenex
is in order. If anybody here reads EGM(I personally favor X-play, or X-box Magazine) a recent issue mentions efforts to make gamers feel other emotions, Yes, you guessed it, cry.
Bungie may or may not choose this method, but everyone loves MC. Until the OFFICIAL, on the hour release of H3, we can only do 2 things. Guess and post.So keep posting your thoughts, criticizm, and praise.
