Before Backwash came out, Bungie was saying that visibility was very low on that map, and you could barely see in front of you. We ended up being able to see a lot more on that map than I was lead to believe (probably for gameplay reasons), but that gave me an idea for Halo 3 multiplayer: Weather that changes.

Imagine you play a level one day, and it's sweltering-hot. The sun is really bright and reflects on the armor of the chief more, and you can see the heat "distortion" above the ground when looking in the distance. Then you play the next day, and it's an absolute monsoon. Visiblity is very low, you can't hear as well over the sound of the rain, pools of water are collecting on muddy ground. Maybe you even make mud tracks and drip water off of your armor when you go inside? When it snowed, bodies of water could become frozen and grass could be frosted over. The wind direction would determine what direction the smoke and debris from explosions blew in.

I originally thought the weather should be within 24-hour periods, like "today it is raining on Backwash." But the weather should not depend on the time and date on the users' X-Box's; If on July 10th it was always clear, and on July 11th the map was snowy, users could set their system clocks for the earlier date and have a tremendous advantage. Variable weather could only work if all the players in that game had the same weather conditions. If that were the case, then the weather would be better to change with individual games. Imagine starting a game of Team Slayer and seeing "Gametype: Team Slayer, Starting Weapon: Assault Rifle, Weapons on Map: Default, Weather Condition:Raining."

I'm not a programmer, and I don't know what the X-Box 360 is capable of. But something like this would be a tremendous addition of realism, and something to shake up the gameplay. I think it's an awesome idea.

I'm adding a poll. Please vote on it. It's amazing how open Bungie is to community response, and I'm hoping this idea will generate enough of a response for somebody from Bungie to notice.

Dude, I have to agree with you here, Weather Condition's would own. I don't see why they couldn't be randomised along with the map and gametype in Matchmaking (assuming a similar system remains)

Not only would it look good, with skillful implemantation (it's Bungie, we can't expect anything less), I'm sure it would throw up all sorts of different kinds of situations. It might even change large portions of the map, making the stream in Beaver Creek swell up in a monsoon, or fall to a pathetic trickle in sorching heat perhaps? I'd love to see that

So yeah... DO IT BUNGIE!!!!!!!!!! ^_^

i would just say thatthe level is how it is that it changes wheather by it self at one point it's sunny then a little layter it changes to a big thunder storm with losts of wind and rain then goes into hail then snow somethign like that

It seems to make the most sense that individual games would vary in their weather.

I would like it, but the more weather they add, I think they have to cut the number of total maps, because each variation in weather is actually a whole new map, with different sound files, lighting, and everything else for the weather change.

I would love to see this, but if there is different weathers on the maps, there probably won't be too many.

But yeah, if they can do it, It would be one of those things that the game is remembered for even by people who hate halo...

I'm sorry to sound like a complete twat, but this has been mentioned, discussed and argued over numerous times.
Anyway, it is a good idea, although like said above it would probably decrease the number of maps. Perhaps lag, who knows?
Also, I'm not sure if Bungie are open to ideas at this stage, maybe they have already got a pretty rock solid idea of what multiplayer is going to be like, maybe not.
Don't quote me on it, I aint no wiz.

I was just dissapointed by Backwash, and how I could really see more than 15 feet in front of me. Does anybody know if they scaled back the fog, or if it was just exaggerated?
