There have now been 2 situations in which it is more than likely that someone has enlisted the "help" of a particular group of people who have then come in and more than likely used alternative member accounts to heavily sway the voting in a weekly challenge, thus illegitimizing the challenge as a whole, losing some faith in the Community from DeeJ's point of view, and further assuring the idea that the community cannot handle these polls because of our immaturity, etc.

It is because of this that I recommend an amendment to the rules whereby if, at the very least, someone is found out to have been involved in, let alone confesses to having tampered in some way with the voting, that they be warned both publicly and officially, and at the more reasonable degree someone in that situation is first investigated and then banned (especially for repeat offenders).

Things like this make community challenges not fun for anyone because they illegitimize the very idea of them because now whenever someone votes in one they'll be thinking "How many of those other 43 votes are alts? Does User A really have a lead over User B?", and it reduces our chance of having one of these ever again (as made evident by this being our most recent one since someone -blam!- up the voting in the last one).

Thoughts?

No. If by tampering you mean spamming other boards, then the problem isn't really the tampering, but more the spamming.

Or the admission of using an army of alts or having enlisted the services thereof.

Not really sure why campaigning or asking your friends for their votes is really a problem.

Alts are. But the web team doesn't seem to care much about those.

Enlisting the votes of friends is okay, but if one posts asking for the votes of friends, who also have a history of having ownership over alts, then perhaps it should be warned against. I know that we all just want to have more votes from friends to win, but if you ask your friends who just happen to also have a ton of alts, then maybe you shouldn't ask your friends, because it seems rather unfair.

A user such as myself has never had a need for an alt, and I'd go so far as to say they really have no purpose, so anyone who has an alt should just get rid of it. I would have particular bias though because the last challenge I lost due to this sort of voting fix. No, I'm not butthurt, Foman was pretty damn witty, so I'll give him that, but had it not been for the alts, who knows how close it would have been.

Doesn't matter though, that time has come and past, and I feel as though this sort of occurrence wont happen enough to be of any significance. And when it does, DeeJ et. al. will take the appropriate course of action to solve the problem.

Mainly because asking someone for their votes will influence them to vote for you if you're friends. Or, adversely, if they dislike you it will predispose them to not vote for you when they may have originally. Either way it's swaying the vote of those who you ask. The main problem is with the latter outcome, especially when that "friend" is a big group like FT.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Then I guess you could say Deej ruined the contest from the start by asking for votes first.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

It depends on the scenario. This last poll would have been fun either way. Alt accounts and using alts to tip the scales kinda soured it a bit, but its an internet forum.... not a huge deal.

Forget this, I am done being sympathetic.

Deej was doing the same thing you are accusing others. If you don't like it, I don't care.

No one broke any rules and the faster you get over it is the faster the whining stops.

Also, you can't prove anything was ever tampered so complaining about it is silly.

Don't worry, I am not going anywhere. I am just tired of hearing all the complaining and baseless accusations.

Voting for your friends DOES NOT break the rules. Asking people to vote for someone does not break the rules.

No one is forced to vote, if people really want to vote for someone, they will. One person's opinion will not change who they vote for. If someone wants to vote for someone, they will do it.

Once more, with feeling.

That might not break any rules, either, because there's no rule against having alts, I'm just pointing out the unfairness of the situation. I don't care, it isn't all that big a deal, but you're saying something that isn't true. Alts were used, that's the damn truth.

Your anecdotal evidence is beaten by my circumstantial evidence.

You asked FT for help. They helped YOU.

And the point of this thread is to change the rules so that this is illegal, so for the love of god stop blithering about how it's not against the rules because if it was against the rules I wouldn't have made the damn thread.

Did you ever think people are just you know saying that to get people like you mad? Not trying to be mean but someone can say "hey I am an alt".

Where there alts? Maybe. Was anyone asked to use alts to vote? no. No one was advocating using alts and no one was asked to.

I nor anyone else can control the actions of others.
