Subject: Should Halo 4 threads be bannable?

I wouldn't normally suggest something like this, but things are out of hand. The Flood is drowning in them (not right now, but lately). Generally they escalate into one-sided rants or flame wars.

While I don't like the idea of another topic being ban or warning worthy, I feel the number of these threads detracts from the variety of the flood.

What do you guys think?

I've been playing Halo since 2002. My earliest memories include hiding at the shotgun window on Damnation and killing my dad with grenades while playing co-op on Pillar of Autumn.

Perhaps. I think they're on the same level, at this point, as political threads because they always spark arguments. Always.

This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends;
Not with a bang but a whimper.

There has been a thread similar to this before, and I say no, or at least not on the basis that they are Halo 4 threads. If they become monologuing rants or flame wars, sure, lock them and ban the participants. The topic itself is not the problem; it is the poster's inability to remain calm and collected during a conversation that is the problem.

Besides, if they were banable, this thread would not exist. It's kind of a paradox, like what would happen if you went back in time and killed your grandpa?

Banning Halo 4 as a topic I say no. I don't go to 343 much so it's a good source of info for me.

If things get ugly that's what the mods are for.

The sad part is that's accurate. I've only seen a few that haven't become Hot Topics.

Stupidity, when sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic

It's what the flood wants to talk about no use suppressing it.

  • 10.03.2012 6:53 PM PDT

I don't think they should, unless they are rule-breaking. Simple as that.

  • 10.03.2012 6:54 PM PDT

GOAT

News about Halo 4 is coming out every week, and people want to discuss it.

Now most of those threads don't become flame wars. Two people arguing stubbornly is not a flame war. Is it stupid? Yes, but that's really nothing new on the Flood, or anywhere on Bungie.net for that matter.

Also, the flood is largely Pro Halo 4, the minority is just very outspoken.

Still. Maybe the mods could set up a H4 news thread, for information to be posted in? It would save room on the front page for different content and topics.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Well put Haydoi.

I don't think Halo 4 threads should be disallowed. Its one of the big topics in gaming, people want to talk about it. They're going to talk about it. Its just part of the whole deal you get with free access to a forum. If we banned Halo 4 topics, we'd have to ban all the hot topics that come out for the next "big thing". We'd have to ban topics for new movies, other games, world events...and that's nothing short of counter-productive.

We should let The Flood discuss Halo 4, or other big topics that are not already breaking a standing rule. If people take advantage of Bungie giving them a place to talk about that stuff by being abusive to other users, we'll deal with them. We don't need to do away with the topic altogether.

You know what we should do away with? Users who have numbers in their names.

Ban the topic? No, but the mods should keep a close eye on the Halo 4 threads as they're spreading to other forums on this site.

Sad face.

But to the OT I don't think just in general they should be banned, but for obvious rule breaking or out of control threads pertaining to Halo 4 should be locked.

Sorry, my first response was kinda rude. No, I don't think it's a good idea. Maybe they could be locked if there is flaming in them but you shouldn't be banned for trying to create disscussion.

I suggested an official Halo 4 topic before, but people would abuse it and it would probably end up as a flame war after a few pages.

There are always Halo groups, so I urge people to join mine or others if they want a place to discuss the game. The posts go in the flood because people aren't joining the groups.

I'd look really weird as just "A Legged Goat".

It would be like stating the sky is blue.

That would be a really good idea, just getting it to stick is the problem.

I just joined yours which I should have done earlier. But it's like a group has to have 1000's of members for it to be effective and productive.

Only regret is I didn't play more of it.

If you haven't noticed by now, I'm sort of a jerk.

The Flood is for Off-Topic discussion. Halo 4 is Off-Topic. Where's the problem?
