Hello,

I was just thinking and a thought occured to me.. everyone seems to be going on about TOO much auto aim... and to a point i can see there view
Auto aim compentsates for Latency but to much takes away skill element.

Some people think that Getting rid of Auto Aim is the key. However the game would be unbearable

UNLESS Halo 3 did what we do, and still do, in Halo PC which is Aim infront of the person not directly at him. this compentsated the lagg and was key to making critical kills. any sniper in Halo PC will know what i'm saying.

It took a good judge of distance speed and direction to get the shots off
i feel that this would be a good way of implementing a way of balancing Auto Aim and skill

your thoughts please...

flamers bewarned... i'm wearing flame proof underware... =] kinda rides up though =0

Wasn't "leading that target" due to the bullet velocity? It's what snipers have to do in the army too. Bullets don't go at the speed of light you know. Wait...or do they?!

Hehe i'm sue they go pretty fast :) I think that "leading the target" as you put it is a better way of compensating for lagg than Auto Aim and was alot better than just aiming at a head .. with it you have to look where they are going and how far ahead to shoot =]

  • 06.26.2006 11:11 AM PDT

Online gaming requires auto-aim = fallacy.

The only thing that helps compensate for latency is the larger hitboxes. Sticky reticule, bullet magnetism - they do nothing to help latency. They simply create a shallower learning curve.

Actually a small amount of reticle magnetism is needed to help aim with the limited motion of an analogue stick. However, most autoaim is not needed if Bungie could implement a decent clientside trust system.

They need to take auto aim off. Leading the target is what Halo 3 needs. You need to becarful what you wish for though. Bullets sink too. They don't fly straight.

I don't know exactly how the system worked in the PC version but i prefereed it that way compared to Halo 2 at the moment =] it seemed like you had to aim ahead, it could just be a combination of those above however. if i were to shoot directly at their head, it would miss. this is at a ping of 64 and with the target moving.. you had to aim further infront on vechiles and the like.

i liked this system. Does anyone else?

The last thing i want is TOO mush realisim, this is in a game where there are aliens and swords made of light. Does that sound real to you? hehe.

Yes, of course some sticky reticule is necessary due to the nature of aiming with sticks. BUT - it does nothing to help overcome latency.

It wouldn't make sense to go from a lightning fast bullet in Halo 2 to a slower bullet in Halo 3, but it would even out the game (Although I think they need to get rid of the homing rockets first). I'd be willing to ignore it just for playability's sake. Plus, it would make the game more challenging.

At first i was Excited about homing rockets.. i remember on Halo CE PC i would aim hoplessly at Shees with rockets.. trying to shoot them down. but after a while i realised that aiming hoplesly was what made it fun =]

Predicting A hogs path and shooting a Rocket just in time was a good feeling after it hit its target. i think they should maybe increase its turning circle.. and make it faster.. (if its faster the turning circle increases)

Anyway, hink about it. This is 500 years in the future. It makes sence that humans would be using improved guns with faster bullets, so leading targets wouldnt really be neccessary.

As for the auto aim, heck the cheifs a cyborg whose been in the army since he was 6. He probably WOULD automatically aim without thinking about it. So it fits the story to have auto aim. For gameplay sake, I say get rid of bullet magnetism, be keep the sticky reticle the way it is. We need help, but not that much.

Games tend to be quite harder without auto-aim, magnetism, whatever you want to call it. But I think they're more fun than run-and-gun games like Halo2.

Hmm in 500 years i suppose that it is true we would have supieror weapons, however 100 years ago when they thought of the year 2000 they thought we'd be living in space on mars...or the moon! but little has changed.

I think this also highlights my point that in a game Content should be realistic... but the Mechaninics of a game can differ. since too much realisim in the Mechanics of a game can lead to slow gameplay. I'd rather the Gameplay be fun than be real. everything is basedon a false sense of belief, this includeds games :)

Hehe and i reply alot because i have alot to say! =P i've spent ages reading posts.. and now i'm breaking out!

Down, down to hell and say that I sent you there...

I came into the world with my legs forward and a woman cried "he was born with teeth!"

"I had no father I am like my father...I had no brother I am like my brother...And this word, "love" which old farts call divine be resident in men like you -blam!-. But not in me, I am my mother-blam!- self, alone."

You Are an Idiot

I simply point to Halo 2 being the most played game on LIVE, nearly two years after it's release. Simply put, if it's not broke, don't fix it.

It is true that it is the most played game ever on XBL. however a few changes and TADA you have total Domination isn't that what Bungie wants?

  • 06.26.2006 12:26 PM PDT

Did anyone here ever play Halo!? Why not just have it the way it was. Halo didn't have as much auto aim but there was still just enough to keep the game fun. You had to lead your target just like someone else said about the pc version.
Bungie could just tweak it a bit like slightly larger hit boxes but not as much as halo 2, and maybe increase the aim assist a bit but again not as much as in halo 2.

If Bungie does that then I'll be happy.

Halo CE was the most played game on xbox LAN (and even on XBC)....and they 'fixed' the hell out of that. So sorry to everyone who wants Halo 2.1 - because Bungie doesn't work like that.

OK, yes, it is very true that I'm a dumb ass. I'm not denying that. However, isn't the whole point of a beta to increase the amount of users until you get someone dumb enough to try something you haven't anticipated.

yes you have to lead them with the bullet velosity factor but when playing halo pc online you have to lead with the bullet velosity and the according to the ping, like if i am using the pistol at about 30m i will lead about 1 to 1.5 cm (distance measuered on my monitor) infront of the target at a latancy of say 135 but if i had a ping of 67 i would lead only half a centimeter for the same shot.

i play halo pc at least 5 times a week for the past 100 weeks or so. i know what i am talking about

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"? That's what we were saying about Halo 1. But look what happened to it now.

And yeah, Opey could probably win that game without using his BR. Best SMG user in Halo.

Auto Aim is used in almost all console games, because they use thumbsticks. Where as PCs just have to point and click.

And Online games need auto aim.

And if you don't want to use auto aim, try playing a 1v1 against someone on the same team as you. You'll see how much you'll need it.
