The E3 trailer (for halo 2, you know, the real-time one) was, to me, more thrilling that Halo 2 actually was.
The trailer showed a dark, gritty city, that was clearly under attack. The city was wrecked, with large fires and piles of rubble everywhere, and the sky was an ominous dark blue with lightning strikes, and the streets were littered with corpses, both human and alien, and half destroyed military buildings blocked up roads. Explosions of human and Covenant artillery flashed at random intervals in the sky. The city looked like a real city might in the future, everything was a grayish metal, with curving streets and overpasses that added to the confusion. Even though you could only see small areas of the city at one time, it was obvious there was stuff happening outside of areas the MC was at. The level had a very desperate, last hope, hurry the hell up or we'll die feel to it. It was believable, and it looked awesome.
Halo 2 showed us a more bright and happy looking city, that looked like it was planned as a zoo. There were small, grassy openings in the middle of all the gray metal, which was silly. The Bridge fight in the tank offered nothing to look at, it was over quickly, and boring. Outside the tunnel was very cool, except for the oddly placed grass in the middle of all the metal and stone. And instead of being a cityscape, it looked like an amusement park, very happy and friendly, no battle damage, very linear, and over with far to soon. And, the time at the Marine CP was, at best, lame. It wreaked of trying to recapture the thrill of that E3 trailer, and Cpl Perez's and Sgt. Banks' performances made it worse, they sounded like someone who had forgotten their lines and was reading from a cue card. "When I...asked for rein...forcements. I didn't think....they'd send a...Spartan." That level had a "yeah, there are Covies here, but look! Flowers! And pretty landscape! Take your time and enjoy the garden under the platform." fell to it.
For those who don't get what I'm saying, watch the E3 trailer, preferable on the Xbox (disk 2 of the soundtrack for Halo: CE. Then play Metropolis. The difference is painful. Trailer: Dark, gritty, futuristic, war-torn. Halo 2: Meh, we want it to look PRETTY. So here is some GRASS AND FLOWERS. I think Halo 3 should revisit that cityscape, and put us in the middle of that city, trying to push the Covenant invasion out.
