Halo 3 is the best Halo ever
Maps I like: Turf, Avalanche, Pylon, Sandbox, Breakpoint and many more.

That many of the members on Bungie.net who are in private groups delete inactive members? While I'm not insulting you, I think it is kind of stupid. Are you in a group like this, or have you done it yourself/

I don't know if this is right forum, but The Classifieds didn't seem approriate.

I don't bother with groups, I don't have the time, patience or motivation to do anything with them. Deletion of inactive members is another reason I don't bother.

Never noticed that personally. What's the issue anyway?

I help moderate a group and whilst I see your point I still think that if a member is inactive then they hold no value, so what is the point of having them at all?

When I ran a group I never kicked out the inactive. However, I think it is alright if someone does.

I tell you, we're here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.

A group i'm still proud to be a member of (SSO) used to be one of the bigger and more active groups on bnet. after bnet lost lots of member activity after reach one of the mods removed a few thousand inactive members, since only about 20 people were posting regularly at that point. it scares away new members, but honestly i think nothing of much value was lost. almost all the people who still frequent it have been there since the first few hundred members, so it's just a much more personal atmosphere and we're all old friends.

I don't see why it would be considered stupid either. If they're not contributing to the group and not participating in any activities of the group, then why shouldn't they be removed. What's the point of them being in the group if they're not participating.

It makes sense to delete inactive members. If you want to lurk forums, there are the public forums. If you actually want to be in a group, you should actively participate.

  • 10.07.2012 3:25 PM PDT

I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I just wouldn't do it in my group. Maybe send a PM to remind the specific user to pick their activity back up. No kick for inactivity in my book.

Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

Firstly, guys, just quoting another post doesn't add anything to the conversation.

I can't say I've even seen this removing happen but I don't really see the point in it, especially if there's a long list (I'm not totally against it either, if it's your group, do as you please).

Another point I wanted to make was that sometimes I lurk around groups and enjoy the conversations happening but don't really have anything to add. I suppose one could always re-join if one is kicked from a group but perhaps this is one reason to think twice before sweeping all the cobwebs- think of the poor spiders!

Actually, I kinda find that admirable. They don't plump up their numbers by keeping inactive accounts in their roster. Kudos to them.

Well true, but it just shows that they agree with the person they quoted. I don't know if saying the same thing with different wording adds more to the conversation.

Like no posts in one year or 6 months and so on. Surely you post at least once a month, even if you just like to lurk?

Just drink a beer and everything will be ok

Personally, I think that deleting members takes a considerable amount of time and effort as the current system is somewhat cumbersome (needs more people per page). By all means, if you want to delete me from your group for being inactive, go ahead, I don't mind.
I don't really see it particularly benefitting or harming either the group or the individuals who are kicked, apart from the odd lurker who likes to watch but not post.

I leave the members there. Why? Because I'd give them the oppurtunity to lurk. And it makes the group look bigger than it really is.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

I am not a member of a group like this, and I haven't personally done this.

But still, if they haven't been active in months or years, why keep them a member? Especially if your group is open to everyone.

Well true, but it just shows that they agree with the person they quoted. I don't know if saying the same thing with different wording adds more to the conversation.
I would argue that these points coincide with each other.

So you're saying that if I joined a group and only ever quoted someone else's post, it would still be better than not being "active" in said group?

Sounds fishy to me.

If there is good discussion people will post their thoughts. There will be threads that require discussion and threads that don't, like this thread. We are discussing something off topic to the thread which is the only reason why I'm posting here. There is literally nothing I can add to the discussion of the OP because there is nothing to discuss.

I think instead of quoting a user they should just not post at all, however this is where I feel ratings would come in handy.

Not necessarily better, but at least more active. And I like to assume that even if you are just quoting someone, you have read the OP and what the person you are quoting wrote. There's really no other way to track activity right?

And if you don't post anything at all for a full year or 6 months, are you really contributing to the group at all?

Note that this is just my speculation, I don't have mod powers in any group and probably never will.

I personally have not seen members be removed from a group for being inactive. Then again, I probably would not notice inactive members being removed because there would be no way to notice their absence.

I've been in a group that did this, they were around 300 members and cut out the inactive accounts, and got down to around 100. They didn't want to mislead people into thinking they were bigger or more active than they were.
