I've heard quite a few people link up the Ark theory in Halo 3 to that of the ark in Indiana Jones: Raiders of the lost Ark. For those of you who have never watched Indian Jones: r.o.t.l.a. the ark in the movie is the ark of the covenent and it was believed to hold the key to imortality but instead it was really a type of pandora's box killing whoever opened it.
However.. and this is the key element i'd like to present as to why i think this link fits best with Halo.. in Indiana Jones: raiders of the lost ark, at the end of the film when the -blam!-'s are trying to open the ark of the covenent to gain immortal life, indiana jones tries to prevent it warning them that its all a lie and that they are opening a sortof pandora's box... but, the -blam!-'s are too greedy to listen to him, all they want is the power inside the ark to become immortal, but when they open the ark, only all the greedy soldiers who wanted the power within are killed by the powers within, Indiana jones survives and i think that the Ark in the movie was designed to keep those who wanted absolute power for their own purposes and greed from getting their hands on it, indiana jones who didnt want the power from within the ark was spared while all those who were acting on greed and desire for power were killed.
I believe( and i am not claiming to be right but i think this fits well..) that whatever the Ark may be in Halo 3.. whether it is the huge structure buried beneath Africa or something else we havent seen yet, i feel it will serve a double purpose.. the covenent who are driven by their own greed to conquer the galaxy and depart upon the great journey see the ark as a means to begin that journey, just as the -blam!-'s in indiana jones believed the ark in the movie would grant them the power of immortality, they were wrong, and for all we know the covenent may be wrong as well and the covenant are being decieved into believing that the Ark will grant them the ability to begin their great journey when infact it may be a pandora's box waiting to be opened.
This theory to me makes a lot more sense than the idea that the Ark will protect Earth or humans or anybody for that matter.
Anyway, this is just an idea building more upon the indiana jones link to the ark which ive seen posted by a few people, feel free to post your thoughts on the matter. Thanks!
