Poll: Is The Seventh Column A Subculture?  [closed]
Yes:  63%

No:  37%

Total Votes: 30

Definition: A cultural group within a larger culture, often having beliefs or interests at variance with those of the larger culture.
Recently, I had to do a project about subcultures in my Sociology class, and while learning about the subject, it made me think that the Seventh Column could be classified as a subculture, too. Now this is where the Community comes in, because I need your opinion from the sauce. So just comment with an opinion and remember to vote!

Edit: I removed the question section because it wasn't getting any attention and was a bore to look at.

Edit 2: While viewing the responses, I think I can safely say that we are at least a branch of a subculture, which would be "gamers."

It is possible to commit no errors and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.

Cheeto is the only one among you that doesn't suck.

I don't think so. We're a community, not a culture.

"Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart.
Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens."

Not really. We are parts of other cultures, this is just a recreational activity for the members of this community.

A culture does not need "Rites of Passage" or "Components of Culture", although they might be common in most cultures. Cultures only need a group of people that are networked together through some common. For example, race has culture, coffee has a culture, nations have culture, religions have culture, politics have culture, your office/school has culture, &c...

The Bungie Community forum can be seen as a subculture of Bungie.net, which can be seen as a subculture of the Bungie Community, which can be seen as a subculture of the gaming industry, which can be seen as a subculture of the entertainment industry, which can be seen as a subculture of industry, which can be seen as a subculture of humanity.

Or, to put it short: yes, I believe the Seventh Column is a culture, and a subculture.

A specific culture needs to be defined before a subculture is.

Break down, every single one of you.

"Culture" is very broad and hard to define, but I suppose you could argue us being a subculture for that exact reason.

I'm gonna finish it. Just like Jigga did to the pyramid.

all I see is a gaming forum belonging to people who don't have a game. How blind am I if you can see a subculture?

GOAT

Nope.

We're just a collection of people who like Bungie.

I've never thought of it as a culture. I think of it as a community.

As a Commerce (in Management) graduate I spent four years learning about cultural differences around the world... when I hear the word "culture" I think of much more than just community.

I think we're a community with a passion for games and cooperation, and this is our outlet to socialize with others sharing the same passion.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Bnet as a whole is a sub culture.... i dont know i guess the Septagon is or it used to be anyways. The Flood was defiantly one a few years back.

Nice research. I guess you could define us as a culture. But I see us more as DeeJ's personal army.

  • 10.08.2012 3:25 PM PDT

I say yes. I've taken a fair share of sociology classes and I'd call us a legitimate subculture.

I said The Seventh Column because we are Bungie's designated underground army. The Flood and the other forums are not really connected to our main beliefs and goals, like the Seven Steps to World Domination.

  • 10.08.2012 4:22 PM PDT

We're a community, not really a culture. I don't really picture it as such, anyway.

ALAN IS A BEAUTIFUL MAN!

In a way. I still think of this as literally a "Community" as opposed to anything else.
