Why didn't they? Couldn't a team of Spartan-II's escorting some naval personnel board a Covie Battlecruiser and capture it then allow the naval personnel to take control of it? Rinse and repeat.

I mean we all know that UNSC ships are garbage when facing Covenant ships. So they should've just captured Covie ships to level the playing field.

Would've been pretty effective in my opinion.

Not sure.

Maybe because they didn't have time to train every average joe to pilot one of their ships?

That and it was almost impossible to capture one. Getting close was a nightmare.

They could've used a prowler to get close enough and board it.

I would guess they would self destruct before they let that happen.

The most simple explanation would be that Covenant ships just couldn't be approached safely enough to land boarding parties.

That or the sheer technological cliff held by the Covenant would render that option ineffective.

Why, when you have your own gun that you know works and that you are familiar with, would you stake your life on an enemy weapon that you are less than 100% capable with? That is one way to look at it.

Or maybe it was because the UNSC was betting on ground victories more than space battles. It was the footsoldier, after all, that was the determining force of any war. (in one way of thinking)

And since I've been hearing that the UNSC is fascist in a way, maybe we can say that they made the potentially irresponsible choice of not making more effort to reverse engineer Covie tech and improve their space ships.

We lost most of our space battles against the Covenant. What makes you think we're gonna do any better putting one of our frigates right beside one of their cruisers in the vain hope that the UNSC strike force we throw in there will actually clear it out and capture it?

Besides, we have to remember that both the Elites and Brutes, the captains of the Covenant fleet, are fanatical zealots loyal to their cause. They'd die before they let the ship fall to human hands, so you'd have to clear the ship, room from room, lest some officer go and blow up the fusion core or something.

Hell, if things got really bad, there's no stopping the Elites from hitting the self-destruct or "Eject Wing" button. If you've seen "The Package" from Halo Legends, you know what I'm talking about.

Besides, we technically were already using some Covenant tech against them. The Mark V MJOLNIR armor used Covie tech in order to power the shield generators.

...Even though UNSC weapons were utterly useless when compared with Covenant weapons/ships.

And since I've been hearing that the UNSC is fascist in a way, maybe we can say that they made the potentially irresponsible choice of not making more effort to reverse engineer Covie tech and improve their space ships.Wait, what? Since when did you hear that they were fascist?

Probably over zealous accusations from Innies.

Because we know those guys were awesome, right?

I found it funny that the UNSC and the Innies were fighting each other while at the same time trying to hold off the Covenant.

You'd think the Insurrectionists would be more worried about survival instead of what kind of government your species has.

Then the troops get inside and get slaughtered.

The encounters we know about involved Spartans, AI working with them, and low numbers of opposing forces that would pose a serious threat.

The ship Chief highjacked with Johnson and the others had only 100 Elites, some grunts, maybe some jackals, and the rest was Engineers.

Cheif and the marines dealt with around 3 or so Elites, then flushed all the others out into space or sucked the air out of compartments.

Cheif was nearly killed multiple times, twice by Elites and once by Grunt gangbang.

So, these operations would sustain high casualties, need high numbers of troops assuming spartans were not involved, advanced AI to take over the ship, all for a minimal payout.

Once the word was out that Aescendant Justice was boarded, the ship was pretty much totaled in the fight.

So, overall, the conditions chief had were very lucky, and were it anyone else the operation would have likely failed. No point in wasting soldiers in an operation with low success odds. Only one's I could see being used were Spartan IIIs, and as it is they were needed elsewhere.

i think it was mainly this.I remember in a book (don't remember which one) that whenever a covenant ship was disabled and able to be boarded they self destructed.

  • 10.09.2012 12:22 AM PDT

In The Fall of Reach, it says whenever a Covenant ship's been boarded or about to be boarded, they've initiated a self-destruct and destroyed the ship.

Ascendant Justice was a special case.

I agree with him.
But you can disable the self destruct on the control board in the bridge.

Their bridge is in the center of the ship.

1. Human ships had their pilot at the front so there was a big danger about data falling into enemy hands. (Thus the Cole protocol.)
2. They are going to be well fortified in there against enemy attacks, since they are in the center.
3. You have to travel all that distance once inside anyways.
4. They wanted to explode in the first place.

They were hard to reverse engineer. The Needler is impossible to reverse engineer according to Halsey, and they don't know how to charge plasma weapons.

Covenant ships are also near impossible to capture.

I am alpha, i am omega.

I am the last of the primes.

Ye because a frigate can just go next to a cruiser and say "sup my home boys are just going to board your ass" instead it would get owned within 10 seconds of being within weapon range.
Anything smaller and you won't have the numbers to take the ship. Unless you have Spartans, but if they can't guarantee the capture of a ship.

oh and Spartans don't go grow on trees

Exactly, if they are in the center, personally i would NOT want to be in the center of something that is exploding.Covenant might like me to be but im not a fan of being killed by explosions

I'm sure they tried, but you try learning how to use more advanced alien weaponry in just a few years' time.
