I'm trying to become an '04, but it's not working too well."

It'd be cool if the report button worked as a thumbs down.

the only problem i have with mine is that it's unstable,[very shakey],so you'd need a tripod for it.

I thought it did.

I don't get why people say social network. We pretty much are a SOCIAL NETWORK with out all the glossy buttons such as 'like' and 'add friend'. We all chat here, we all have fun, we play together and make friends.. sounds like a network to me!

I think this is a good idea. I don't have anything else to add though, so this is a useless reply, but it's the only way I can show that I agree with something.

Some people seem to think these kinds of posts actually contribute to a discussion.

We don't? I simply do not see a problem with blank quoting. It's better than a post deviod of all but "I agree with you.".
They're both completely useless replies that do nothing but impede a discussion. Both should be discouraged.
Not completely useless. It could be reassurance toward an idea or answer an OP had or needed.
If one person posts something, it can be dismissed, if 10 people post something, it cannot as easily. It's also great for lazy people like me.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

Normally when I quote someone without typing anything else OP, it is because they had the same opinion as me but expressed it better than me.

I can see this becoming an issue with people just agreeing with the original thread instead of actually replying to it. Other than that, I don't have an issue with your idea, OP.

What I don't get is why this is constantly brought up when it's completely irrelevant to the topic.

That's precisely the reason they should be discouraged. If 10 people all post a quote from someone, IMO, that's spam.

You do have something to add to discussion, you just don't want to bother writing out the ways in which you agree with the OP, nor combat any of the negative responses above on the side of the OP.

This is all well and good but it makes for a very unproductive and uninteresting post. Now, yours was not just a simple "this is a good idea" post because you had a purpose behind it to demonstrate the "effectiveness" of posts like this (pretty neutrally, IMO; well done there), but that doesn't mean that a post of this nature is at all productive or effective in the area of discussion creation.

This is where the "like", "+/-1", "approve" feature(s) come in to play (along with quote-posting, this-ing, and QFT-ing).

If people can't take at least a part of your post and work off of it and discuss it in anyway, I say it's probably not worth posting. Even a joke post should be able to be laughed and subsequently discussed at or commented upon.

When I grow up I want to be bitter and spiteful.

"i liked the reality where everything was on fire better"
-legato on remedial chaos theory

A system that would indicate "agreement", "likes", "thumbs up", or whatever other phrase you wish to call it, would not contribute to discussion and therefore be classified as spam.

To implement such a system does not stop empty-quoting, it simply gives it a different form.

To possibly counter this posts could have a visual representation of whether others are in agreement of the post's statement.

I think the quote boxes you are referring to actually are the "visual representation" of what you're talking about.

From what I have seen, if it's a quote that someone disagrees with, they will leave a "witty" comment of some sort, or a full blown reply with the quote they're using.

Perhaps another option would be to add a little something to the thread description, in the forum where it's posted, attached to the topic and stating if the thread is looking for either a poll, discussion or an opinion.

That might help with the content of threads and help with ineffectual replies.

As far as likes, dislikes, and social networks go, I don't see the problem. They only add options for the user, and options are always good are they not?

A less ugly-looking form. Also, the system would be totally separate from the posting system; it wouldn't need to be held to the same standards or have the same purpose.

The purpose of a post is to discuss.
The purpose of a "like" is to approve.
