I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.--Teddy Roosevelt

What happened to them exactly? Are they still secretly influencing Humanity like a shadow government, or did they die on Reach?

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

The final datapad, I believe, has the Assembly agree to start directly influencing the progress of humanity. A cliffhanger, if you will.

No idea if we'll see them again.

I thought this was a real 'out there' piece of the Halo universe. It seems more like Deus Ex or Assassin's Creed than Halo.

I think 343i asked Bungie to put it in Reach, because otherwise it seems like an extreme thing to include as you're writing a story which is supposed to bring your creation 'full circle.'

I believe it's related to the aggressive path ONI seems to be taking too. I don't think Parangosky has as much control as she thinks.

There's Illuminati iconography in ONI for a reason. And let's not forget what the Office means when acronym'd - Oni. Before it came to mean demons, in Japanese culture Oni were originally invisible spirits - incorporeal beings who would interfere with humanity. They took many forms to deceive humans.

I think the Oni in ONI are the Assembly. I don't think we've seen the last of them, and I think I'm going to have to develop this into a bigger theory when I have the time.

So, essentially 343 is going to canonize the 'ONI did it' excuse.

God dammit.
