Will there be a patch so we can play Halo PC on Windows Vista?

and

Will Halo2Vista be able to take advantage of the new PhysX card?

  • 06.27.2006 2:24 PM PDT

One would imagine that Windows Vista will have some backwards compatibility with older versions of Windows.

All hail the mighty goweb.

Is it true that Vista improves performance in older games, such as Halo?

I hope Halo 2 does take advantage of Ageia's PhysX card, because Halo 2 has tons of neat physics, explosions, flying dismembered limbs from flood zombies, exploding pieces of car, chunks of ghost, pieces of Wraiths flying everywhere when they explode. Let's hope for cooler physics when H2 PC comes to Vista. Also, sometimes the rag doll physics of dead bodies get crazy, what with the distorted limbs that can occur when a body falls in a certain place or position, sometimes making them bounce all over the place or physically impossible positions.

Hm...don't get me wrong, Goweb, I appreciate the quick response, but I would expect someone like Dommer to better know the answer to this question. I mean...moderators aren't necessarily employees of Bungie. No offense meant.

Well, maybe, but it probably wouldn't work so well, the Halo 2 engines physics engine were made for it, and I think they would have to rewrite the physics engine to allow for a physics card to work, and so far, physics cards seem to be pretty horrible, go to Toms Hardware and check out their article on it and their test in the game ghost recon.

Eh, Ghost Recon doesn't offer that much to physics, except exploding cars. Besides, this physics card concept is still new, maybe the technology will get better as time goes by.

Those weird limb positions aren't because the physics engine is faulty, its because of the way the artists rigged the biped.

I just hope we won't see the same funny distorted body animations in Halo 2 when it comes to PC...

It would be business suicide if old games didn't work on Vista.

And it's unlikely that they're using the PhysX card (it's a gimmick anyway)

ROFL, I know. I used to play Halo 2 on Xbox Live religiously, and it was just so annoying to see dead bodies twitching all over the place because of the crappy physics engine.

http://www.bungie.net/Games/HaloPC/page.aspx?section=FAQInfo& amp;subsection=Support&page=2 should allow you to play HPC on Vista. I just found the link though and haven't actually tried it myself with the Vista beta 2 build.

We haven't said anything publicly either way..

Orcface: look at Cell Factor, and tell me its still a gimmick.

Oh wow, now hundreds of boxes can be moved around at the same time! Genius! </sarcasm>

Paying $300 to have better physics is idiotic.

Aggreed. Just a flashy visual or two, for $300+? What's wrong with Havok? Not everyone can afford a card that doesn't affect your game much.

Thanks I never knew that was there!

I guess it a question of whether you can do it with the Halo2 engine?

i had fun screwing with the wierd twitching.it reminds me of bugs when they die.twicth twitch. it is fun to have a leg twitching on multiplayer, when you are offline, just practicing and sniping just the foot.

I don't think you guys say the point behind the cellfactor video, if you even watched it. Anything like that without a physics card would melt your computer. There are sooo many things that are going on you couldnt believe it. Realistic cloth physics, thousands of objects moving, shockwaves, particles, explosions.
Right now, nothing makes use of physics processors very well. In the future, you will probably need one. Its the same as SLi. That was a "gimmick" but is now mainstream.

What Chewy Gumball said. Not too many games are utilizing the full potential of the PhysX card, and the technology will advance in time.

Also, you may not pay $300+ for a PhysX card, but many people would gladly pay hundreds of dollars for smarter enemies. The PhysX card does that since it offloads all the physics the CPU would normally do and thus gives the CPU less work to do, and so there could be an increase in AI performance.

What I'm basically saying is that your mentally-challenged squadmates who run out of cover for no reason in GRAW that put the "Special" in Special Forces could be less stupid if you had a Physics card.
