Directx9.0 video card makes a big difference with Halo! The bump mapping is simply incredible for a "old" game. My original PC for Halo couldn't handle it very well either. Back in the day, this game was the most demanding thing out, so much so that anti-aliasing wasn't even supported and still isn't!
People who play Xbox come over and see Halo @1600x1200 and are blown away with how beautiful it is. Say what you want about the netcode, the graphics was an absolute home run.
Actually, Gearbox still screwed it up, because they failed to optimize it for PC gaming, which is why it was so demanding on systems a few years ago. And anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering would have been awesome, but alas, Gearbox didn't put them in either.
They also messed up some other things, such as you can't have the same shimmer-distortion effect with the active camoflauge as on the Xbox unless you have a really high-end PC, and the teleporters look different than the ones on the Xbox version.
